I usually just thank them for the kind words.  But sadly, there is no shortage of d!ckheads in the military. I would usually tolerate them when I served if they were at least dependable.

I had a buddy who was an insurance claims adjuster and a weekend warrior - JAG.  He had to dress up and go to some 3 day conference every year.  One year, right in the middle of the Iraq war we hen there were a lot of casualties, he had his big off-site nonsense.  He had an ingrown toenail and was limping through the airport in his full uniform.  He said people were stopping him left and right thanking him for his service.  Someone paid for his coffee, and a couple other people saluted him.

I never thank them. It only comes with knowing people before I commend them for being who they are or what they have done. There are a lot of shlt dumbasses in the military who were too stupid to do anything else in life, and said "fock it", this is all I have in life to make my way. The military, is doing them a favor. This country is doing them a favor. They should thank the conservative tax payers.
