Horror films superthread

I don't necessarily have go to's for horror movies because I watch them all year long. I do always watch Halloween and as many of the sequels as pop up on TV this month.

The dumbest movie I always watch this time of year is Ghost Ship. Movie has an amazing first scene and is complete junk the rest of the way.

I usually try to dig up more hidden gems or find things I may have passed over on an initial viewing.

I really liked Black Phone.  It was very different.

Last night I watched Weapons.  Not really a "horror" movie but it was very creepy.  I really enjoyed it.

Weapons is really good. Zach Cregger has a good sense of what he wants to do as a director and he employs it extremely well.

The movie is creepy and atmospheric but also very funny at times.

Yup. I think I like Weapons better but Barbarian is very solid as well.

LOVED Black Phone. Can't wait to see the second one. Also enjoyed Barbarian, didn't expect that one to turn out how it did either. 

 

I've never seen the V/H/S movies, but I thought there were a few of them?

Kind of meh overall. VHS 2 was the best of the bunch from what I’ve seen.

I've never seen the V/H/S movies, but I thought there were a few of them? 

There are quite a few of them.

V/H/S- a little all over the place but a solid first entry

V/H/S 2- a little disjointed but has the greatest segment in the entire franchise

V/H/S Viral- mostly sucks and almost killed the franchise completely. There is a fun story or two but it is really all over the place tone wise

V/H/S 94- legitimately terrifying at times and saved the franchise so it has become a yearly Shudder event

V/H/S 99- Two really awesome segments and very campy in tone.

V/H/S 85- probably the most well made of all of them but certainly not the best

V/H/S Beyond- science fiction horror stuff. It's got some fun moments in the stories but overall is kind of there. The skydiving alien attack is great

del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities on Netflix was really good. Watch that instead.

There are like 3-4 great segments....some good ones....and a lot of just there or bad ones.

I'd seek out Public Television of the Dead, night of the Living Late Show, Smoething Burrowed, Something Blue, Baby Teeth, and parent Deathtrap

AMC Fear Fest had a Freddie/Jason marathon this weekend. I've never seen ALL of them, but I imagine I've seen parts of all of them at some point. I know I've seen the most recent remake of the OG Jason, never was a big Freddie fan. 

That all said, I don't think I really like these movies. It's kind of like Terrifier or SAW, the first one is decent maybe even good, but each one after that gets a little crazy and kind of dumb. 

I DO like the Michael Myers movies, tho. I could watch those all the time. 

 

Also, started the new Ed Gein series on Netflix with Charlie Hunnam. Not bad, but I found it was something that I just could NOT binge. I can listen to podcasts about Ed all day, but the series, while VERY well done and an excellent addition to the "Monster" series by Ryan Murphy, I found I needed a bit of a break.

Plenty of ewwwww moments.   Was not expecting to see Jax from Sons of Anarchy getting caught jerking off with a belt around his neck while wearing Jackie's (from Roseanne) underwear.

I was telling some friends about the Netflix show.  My one buddy is an avid reader and he recommended the book about Ed Gein called "Deviant". 

Unfortunately it's not available in my local library system.  Luckily Spotify has the audio book.  Gonna give it a listen during my next road trip.

I also can't help but think of this song while watching the show:

I haven't been able to finish the show, for some reason and Ed is among one of my favorite heavy hitters. 

Harold Schecter (sp) wrote Deviant and a few other really good true crime novels about famous killers. He's an excellent writer.

I tried watching the Ed Gein netflix show. Cant get into it. The voice drives me nuts

Last night Fear Fest on AMC showed a few more of the Freddy/Jason movies along with Freddy Vs Jason. 

I am not a fan of these. I just don't like them.

1. Mike Meyers

I watched 1.5 episodes.  Ill probably end up watching it through at some point.  

I thought the Dahmer one was real good and fun to watch.  The Menendez brothers was so so.  Not all that exciting.   I ended up cracking up at the spaz brother flipping out and "blame It on the rain" was a nice touch.
