I got a new dog!

Don't get me wrong, I've had dogs. Last one was a black Lab, her name was Pepper.   However that was when I was a teenager and we had acreage.  Nothing worse than the dude who lives in a townhouse with a big dog and takes it with him to the Brewery.  1. Dogs need room to run  2. Nobody wants to hear your poorly trained dog bark .

I realize its "cool" and all but I'm being honest.

Trufe.

I have two red fox labs. They turned 1 on January 11. We have a 3 acre lot. Electric fence in the front and back. They bark when they’re ready to come in the house, but that’s pretty much it.

That is an owner issue, not the animal. There are lots of bad animal owners. There are bad parents too.

When you adopt a dog now, they tend to check you out pretty well. I had to show an invisible fence and how things would be via a Zoom call, and they called my vet. Past adoptions had a home visit.

One thing about my new dog is that she is apparently part Besenji, which means she doesn’t bark much at all. Sort of an issue when people come to the door and all that happens is a tail wag.

We got a mini schnauzer from the pound about 8 years ago.  And fell in love with his personality and temperament.  No shedding, little poops in the yard.  He was just a great dog.

We were out during Christmas and stopped in a pet store with the kids and saw a mini schnauzer pup.  It was adorable but $4k.  No way.

So my daughter found a breeder 30 mins from here.  Shared the story of our old dog and started communicating with her and could tell she loved her pups.  There is no way I could have found this breed my kids could have raised from 8 weeks old.  The price was right and we made it work.  I agree with you, but you can't always just go get the dog you want from rescue.

If you look around and you have some flexibility, then you can find just about any type of dog.

Yep. I used Adoptapet.com. I was looking for a mutt but they have filters for breed, age, gender and distance from your area code. I plugged in mixed / unknown hound or terrier breeds w/in a 100 mile radius of home and found my pup. If you’re patient and willing to drive a little you can find any breed. The really desirable puppy ones get adopted fast though.

The problem is that there are lots of scams. My state has an approved list of adoption companies and kennels. If you stick with them, you are okay.

We also found a statewide animal adoption page on Facebook that was really good. We ended up with a really cute puppy from Kentucky. People down south tend to avoid spaying/neutering and they have lots of unwanted dogs that will just be destroyed if they are not adopted. Sad.

We used petfinder.com for all of our dogs. Felt like I was addicted to doggie p0rn as I would constantly refresh the search to see if any new dogs which fit our criteria would appear.

One frustrating thing, though, is some great dogs would be listed as being within our search radius but then it would be dogs from Houston.  Apparently there is some connection between shelters in the Seattle area and rescues in Houston, so some of the listing were basically adopt without actually meeting the dog first and the fees would pay for transport.  I love dogs but no way would I adopt and pay hundreds of dollars sight unseen.

Hound mix / mutt, may have some beagle in him. He’s 10 weeks old and sleeping on my lap right now.

Congrats!
Dogs truly are man's best friend.  "Dog" folks know this.

Maybe he'll straighten you out. ;)

Such a troll. You miss the glory days of being a bully. The old days are gone brother. I called 9-11 on a cop sleeping in his car last night. Six cops showed up. Guess who walked home

We did it. It was a little disconcerting. We got one picture and it was like a professional photo. She had some pink feather boa and it looked too good to be true. Before we signed, I told them that we wanted some additional pictures showing that the dog had 4 legs and stuff like that. They laughed and understood.

That's cool.  Do you have other dogs in your house?  That's one reason why I couldn't do that when we were looking, as I'd need to make sure they get along first.

No, my other dog died, so this was a replacement if you will. It sucked coming downstairs every day when you work from home and not having the dog there. If I had not been working from home, I would have held off a lot longer before getting another dog. Might not have gotten a puppy as well as they are a lot of work.

HT is no cop.:dunno:

He’s a sexually frustrated house husband who pretends he’s on patrol when he drives Lyft.

I hear ya.  We had 2 dogs for a long time.  We adopted our current dog a bit after our first dog died to get us back to 2.  We're now down to just one when our other dog unexpectedly passed several months ago.  We'll probably stick with just 1 for now.

That's the inevitable downside to having a dog.  Eventually your heart is going to be broken when they die.

There are approximately 700k dogs euthanized at shelters each year.

Is that new? Because saying rescue is. I’ve been around long enough to remember when it was called adopt. Or get. Like , “we are going to get a dog from the pound”. No one was acting like they were a hero.

The number being euthanized is lower than it was in the past.

“Rescue” is not a new term, though. Many places don’t call themselves “Dog Pound”, they call themselves “Animal Rescue”. Blame marketing folks.

Exactly.  It’s marketing, because it’s a business now. Just like the abortion clinic became planned parenthood.  Question, what do we call the people who bring the dogs to the pound? Scumbags?

Depends on why they end up at a shelter. Many are strays and many pet owners shouldn’t have pets (can’t spay or neuter them). There are lots of dumb people out there.

I don’t think all animals end up at shelters do to an owner.

BTW - most shelters are non-profits.

So is planned parenthood. Lots of people making bank in that “non-profit”.  NP is just another scam at this point. Tax breaks and big salaries for management.  Bonuses too.

So, you took a new dog thread into Planned Parenthood? You need a hobby.

Most shelters are small groups with volunteers. The dogs are a fraction of the cost of a breeder. They aren’t making bank.

I wasn’t deflecting as I have no idea how you want to twist this, but I feel real good about what I do.

I said you need a hobby because you want to turn every thread here into some sort of sissy slap fight.

Just clarifying, I know a few.   And you didn’t rescue anyone or anything either. You filled out some paperwork and wrote a check.
