This is my theory too based on what I’ve seen in a big city and heard from friends and coworkers in other big cities. Far less foot traffic and more vacant storefronts = more crime. It’s bouncing back but it will take a while.

I’m not a fan of depolicing fwiw. But the nationwide uptick in crime definitely has more to do with the pandemic than any particular set of policies. You wouldn’t know it though if you lived in the burbs and watched Fox News.

There is no way it could have been about:

1..cuts in police budgets and deteriorating morale.

2.  Prosecutors who will not prosecute petty theft

3.  Bail reform where even murderers get released on little or no bail.

None of those policies mattered....it was COVID I tell you!

And Covid made poverty worse for the people that were already poor or on the brink of being poor.  They were more likely to work jobs that were impacted by restrictions and reduced demand, more likely to catch Covid due to having to actually go to work if they still had a job as well as often living in denser areas and multi-generational households, and more likely to die from Covid if they weren’t healthy.
