We lost our pilot and then the group sort of faded away. I love the BWCA. Spent some time there for maybe six years straight from 15 to 21. Hope to return one more time before I die. Maybe after the Bella Coola one more time and the Orinoco once more. I would also enjoy seeing Ankor Wat from the riverr and wetting a line there. Not to eat, but just to see what bites.

That fish are that fast and even three times that fast does not compute to this boy raised on inland lakes and streams.

I was taught as a young boy to look for structure, points, weed bed edges, drop offs, fallen trees, piers, etc. Same in rivers where i look for eddys behind rocks or bank cuts. Speed trolling for marlin, tuna, and sailfish strikes me as wierd. Still, the fish that can hit on those lines are really the top of the evolutionay chain. Even the Japanese wouldn't eat the damn things they're that ugly and gross. So, bunch of guys hired a New York advertising firm and they renamed it Chileian sea bass. It's not generally found in chile. And it's nowhere near a bass. But God damn, change the name, market it a little bit, get a fancy Chef to talk it up? Damn thing is now on the cusp of being overfished. I forget the name of it, but there's a another fish they're trying to push these days. Commonly harvested around the philippines. Apparently it's a lot easier to farm in large quantities for commercial purposes. Got to look that up. Tilapia? I've heard a similar story for those.

I cast for bass into the cover while keeping an eye on a line sunk to the bottom with a shiner up maybe 18 inches. I get action from bass in the cover, or maybe from a northern as i real in quickly for my next cast, and if a walleye happens to take the shiner on what amiunts to a slow troll as the wind blows me along the shoreline, well they are great eating. Still, I get you. i have had more fight out od a one pound bass than from a ten pound walleye. Walleye are just not that much fun to catch, but they do eat well.

I find myself fishing tournaments more often than fun fishing the last few years. I'll fish about 10 kayak tournaments this year and we have a league that we have every other Tuesday from April to September. The league is fishing from a boat and I partner with my uncle. I have never fished a tournament. I once fished during a tournament I did not sign up for. I did not realize it was taking place until the reservior filled up unnaturally. I paddled in around noon and the weigh station was right by my car. They looked at my stringer and announced over the loudspeaker we have a clear winner. i laughed and told them i was not a contestant. They said too bad. Actually I could not have been as I was legal counsel to a sponsor and would have been prohibited from signing up I can usually get action, but near constant action I see some pros get on T.V., I am not at that level of accomplishment or intensity. I do recognize the skills of those who seem to know exactly where on a deadfall's shadow, or exactly where on the edge of a weedbed a bass is spoiling for trouble. I have a fair eye for that, but not a great one.

It chased your first two casts to cleatr its territory. It is guarding, not feeding You know it is not hungry but is being territorial and you have pissed it off. I love that perfectly placed third cast when it hits the lure simultaneously to the lure hitting the water and it jumps and then races. Naturally i return those nest sitters to the water. I'll just keep hitting them and dropping it on their head until they get pissed and bite it. It can take up to a half hour but it's worth it in the end. Always immediate catch and release.
