The civil rights movement in this country was from beginning to end a leftist movement, often extreme leftist. It was opposed, not just by racists, but by conservatives who were not racist but didn’t believe in federal government interference in state affairs. It’s important not to rewrite the actual history in order for modern day conservatives to feel less guilty.

Actually J Edgar Hoover did come very close to saying this, and I don’t believe racism was his motivation. He simply believed that the Civil Rights movement was loaded with Communists and therefore under the control of the Soviet Union. He was right, partially, about the first part, but extremely wrong about the second part.

That wasn't fake.   He wasn't planning to testify in front of the Senate, but I didn't realize there were 2 hearings.  Apparently for some reason he was planning to testify in front of the House but not the Senate.  And of course we'll never know if he actually would have, I'd still bet his lying azz would have chickened out.
