How Will Indian Americans Vote? Results From the 2020 Indian American Attitudes Survey

As the 2020 presidential election in the United States approaches, Indian Americans are unexpectedly in the spotlight thanks to their growing affluence and influence in political circles and Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s selection of Kamala Harris (who is of partial Indian origin) as his running mate. But significant attention is also being paid to Indian Americans because a narrative is emerging that the apparent courtship between U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, compounded by concerns over how a Biden administration might manage U.S.-India ties.....

....Between 2000 and 2018, the Indian American population grew by nearly 150 percent, making it the second-largest immigrant group in America today. The community’s elevated levels of educational attainment and household income render its members valuable campaign contributors and potential mobilizers. And in select swing states, the Indian American population is larger than the margin of victory that separated Hillary Clinton and Trump in the closely contested 2016 presidential race.....Seventy-two percent of registered Indian American voters plan to vote for Biden and 22 percent intend to vote for Trump in the 2020 November election.....

.....However, there is an emerging narrative that suggests 2020 might well see a significant shift of Indian American voters to the Republican Party due to two factors: Trump’s perceived closeness to Modi, and/or criticisms (perceived or real) of the Modi government by prominent members of the Democratic Party, not least Biden’s running mate, Harris (who herself shares an Indian American identity). Indeed, some recent survey data suggest that Indian American support for the Democratic Party in 2020 appears to have slipped somewhat from its 2016 level....

....The social and political realities characterizing the Indian American community are shaped by a set of distinctive demographic features. Seventy-six percent of Indian Americans hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 33 percent nationwide. The median income for Indian American households is $120,000 (compared to $62,000 for the United States as a whole), while the share living in poverty—6.5 percent—is half that of the U.S. population overall (13 percent). It is likely that these characteristics of the Indian American community have amplified the community’s political significance as it has come to represent a collection of potential high-net-worth campaign donors. During the 2020 primary season, Indian Americans contributed $3 million to presidential campaigns, exceeding Hollywood’s prodigious political activities....

....With regards to turnout, 45 percent of respondents indicated that Harris’s selection made them more likely to vote in November while just 10 percent indicated that it made them less likely to vote ....In all, the Harris pick does seem to have galvanized a large section of the Indian American community with respect to turning out to vote. Don Lemon, a long time mouthpiece for the left leaning activist complicit MSM, really put Team Blue and the DNC in a pickle here. He kept bashing Indian Americans. First Nikki Haley ( which also risked alienating suburban women voters as well) Then Vivek Ramaswamy. 

Team Blue is already at risk of losing a major share of the military/law enforcement vote ( Afghanistan and Defund The Police), suburban women voters ( trans activism that seems to lean towards deleting women's rights), Asian American voters ( indifference to the violence against AAs / "equity" in the public school system that punishes young Asian Americans who succeed academically) , Latino/Hispanic voters ( Border Crisis, inflation, "Latinx"), parents in general ( the hard radical left accused of wanting to sexualize children) and Pro Life Democrats ( somewhere around 15-20 million strong in America today, who don't want widespread unchecked pro-abortion public policy to emerge) 

Don Lemon made it harder to hold onto a critical voting block, but also risks their impact as potential future political donors. And while Team Blue has had a historic advantage, Nikki Haley as either a VPOTUS candidate for Trump or DeSantis, starts to bleed away at that. 

And finally, it doesn't make a lot of minorities in America happy to see a certain level of, IMHO, widespread MSM tolerance of "Black Privilege", where someone like Don Lemon can say "Whatever Ethnicity You Are" and not face the backlash that would happen if a straight white Christian male Republican said the exact same thing. 

You can't be the guy, like Lemon, who keeps screaming racism around every corner, then uses it as some kind of perpetual shield and excuse from criticism, and then call someone else, a POTUS candidate no less, "Whatever Ethnicity You Are" on national television.

Rev. Al Sharpton demands CNN explanation on firing Don Lemon: 'We cannot afford to silence his voice'

Rev. Al Sharpton released a statement on Wednesday that demanded an explanation from CNN regarding the decision to fire longtime host Don Lemon. Lemon himself revealed he was fired in a lengthy statement from his Twitter account on Monday, saying that he was "stunned" by the decision and suspected "larger issues at play" regarding it.  "After 17 years at CNN I would have thought that someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly. At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network," Lemon wrote. "It is clear that there are some larger issues at play."

Throughout his career, Don has been a superb journalist who was very open to the civil rights community on issues others wouldn’t touch. Don’s voice has been invaluable to the conversation of how we become a more just nation. With the health of our democracy undergoing perhaps its greatest test, we cannot afford to silence his voice. We would like to know what he alludes to when he said there are greater things at play, which is why we urge for a full explanation as to why he was let go in such a fashion," the statement read....The comment came from Sharpton’s organization National Action Network (NAN) where he currently serves as the president. The statement also noted that "Civil rights leaders note Lemon gave voice to civil rights community, told stories others wouldn’t."

Vivek Ramaswamy says 'LGBTQIA+ movement' has become a 'cult': 'It's not about logic'

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said the LGBTQIA+ movement is not “about logic” but has become “a cult.”....“Here’s my deal with this LGBTQIA+, especially the trans cult,” Ramaswamy told Hannity. “Dress how you want, behave how you want as an adult, live your life freely, but leave our kids alone and do not demand that we change our language or the way we live our lives. We can all live peaceably that way.....In the name of rights, what they’ve actually done is created a new culture of oppression in the opposite direction, imposing that on kids.....” 

While appearing on Meet the Press on Sunday, Ramaswamy defended his belief that gender is not fluid and that there are only two genders, male and female, telling host Chuck Todd that “gender dysphoria for most of our history, all the way through the DSM V, has been characterized as a mental health disorder.....I don’t think it is compassionate to affirm that. I think it’s cruelty. When a kid is crying out for help....You’ve got to ask the question of what else is going wrong at home? What else is going wrong at school? Let’s be compassionate and get to the heart of that rather than playing this game as though we are actually changing our medical understanding for the last hundred years.”

Ramaswamy added that the Left’s arguments on sexuality and orientation contradict each other from a position of them being hard-wired at birth to now being fluid throughout one’s life....“Those two things cannot make sense at the same time unless you subscribe to some cult, and that is what this LGBTQIA+ movement has become....”

With more than 11 (million) eligible voters (nearly 5% of the total), Asian-Americans are the fastest-growing of all the country’s main ethnic or racial voting groups. Once concentrated in New York and California, they now live in some of the country’s most competitive districts. Central Ohio contains the largest Bhutanese community outside South Asia. Around 600,000 Asian-Americans live in and around Houston, another 600,000 in Dallas and 400,000 in the suburbs of Atlanta. In Georgia...the increase in Asian votes in 2020 compared with 2016 was more than five times Mr Biden’s margin of victory in the state....

Turnout of Asian-American voters rose by 50% between the mid-term polls of 2014 and 2018, and by as much as a third from 2016 to 2020. This was the largest increase of any ethnic group’s votes and proved vital to Democratic victories. “We’ve gone from the margins....to the margin of victory....”....But 2020 was an unusual year. The race took place amid widespread racist attacks against Asian-Americans. Between March 2020 and December 2021, according to an advocacy group, Stop aapi Hate, nearly 11,000 “hate incidents” against Asian-Americans were reported to the group. Shocking shootings have included one at a hair salon in Dallas’s Koreatown, and another at spas in Atlanta (where six of the eight victims were of Asian descent).....

....There are two reasons to think the Republican Party could make big gains. First, Asian-Americans are a very varied lot. They come from a score of countries, speak over 100 languages and espouse different religions. Until recently, they barely recognised the term “Asian-American” except as a census category. Will Asian Americans Bolt From the Democratic Party?

Over the past three decades, Asian American voters — the fastest-growing group in the country according to Pew — have shifted from decisively supporting Republicans to becoming a reliably Democratic bloc, anchored by firmly liberal views on key national issues....The question now is whether this party loyalty will withstand politically divisive developments that appear to pit Asian Americans against other key Democratic constituencies — as controversies emerge, for example, over progressive education policies that show signs of decreasing access to top schools for Asian Americans in order to increase access for Black and Hispanic students....

....In 1992, the year national exit polls started reporting Asian American sentiment, the group leaned Republican, supporting George Bush over Bill Clinton 55 percent to 31 percent. But by 2012, that had reversed. Asian Americans overwhelmingly supported President Obama over Mitt Romney — 73 percent to 26 percent....In an email, Kim cited the declining importance of communism as a key factor in the changing partisan allegiance of Asian American voters. In the 1970s and 80s, he said, “Taiwanese, Koreans, and Vietnamese chose the party that had a reputation of being tougher on communism. Obviously, it was the Republican Party. Policies designed to increase Black and Hispanic access to high-quality schools often result in a reduction in the number of Asian American students admitted.....

.....Compared to white applicants at selective private colleges and universities, black applicants receive an admission boost that is equivalent to 310 SAT points, measured on an all-other-things-equal basis. The boost for Hispanic candidates is equal on average to 130 SAT points. Asian applicants face a 140 point SAT disadvantage....Scholars of Asian American politics have found that Asian American voters have remained relatively strong supporters of affirmative action policies, with one exception: Chinese Americans, who constitute nearly a quarter of all Asian Americans...

....Another issue with the potential to push Asian American voters to the right is crime....The 2018 Crime Victimization report issued in September 2019 by the Bureau of Justice Statistics in the Department of Justice found that 182,230 violent crimes were committed against Asian Americans in 2018. 27.5 percent were committed by African Americans, 24.1 percent by whites, 24.1 percent by Asian Americans, 7 percent by Hispanics and the rest undetermined....While most of the experts on Asian American politics I contacted voiced confidence in the continued commitment of Asian Americans to the Democratic Party and its candidates, there were some danger signals — for example, in the 2021 New York City mayoral election. Eric Adams, the Democrat, decisively beat Curtis Sliwa, the Republican, 65.5 percent to 27.1 percent, but support for Sliwa — an anti-crime stalwart who pledged to take on “the spineless politicians who vote to defund police” — shot up to 44 percent “in precincts where more than half of residents are Asian....” ....A wave of hate crimes targeting Asian Americans during the pandemic has heightened a sense of urgency about public safety and law enforcement. Asian anger and frustration have, for the first time, left a visible dent in a city election....

...Similarly, Asian Americans led the drive to oust three San Francisco School Board members — all progressive Democrats — last month. ....The recall also appeared to be a demonstration of Asian American electoral power. In echoes of debates in other cities, many Chinese voters were incensed when the school board changed the admission system for the district’s most prestigious institution, Lowell High School. It abolished requirements based primarily on grades and test scores, instead implementing a lottery system.... since March 2020 there had been “over 3,000 self-reported incidents of anti-Asian violence from 47 states and the District of Columbia, ranging from stabbings and beatings, to verbal harassment and bullying, to being spit on and shunned.....”

....The changing selectivity of contemporary U.S. Asian immigration has recast Asian Americans from “unassimilable to exceptional,” resulting in their rapid racial mobility. This mobility combined with their minoritized status places them in a unique group position in the U.S. racial hierarchy, conveniently wedged between underrepresented minorities who stand to gain most from the policy (affirmative action) and the advantaged majority who stands to lose most because of it. It also marks Asians as compelling victims of affirmative action who are penalized because of their race.....

...Catalyst, a liberal voter analysis firm, found that from 2016 to 2020, Asian Americans increased their voter turnout by 39 percent, more than any other racial or ethnic constituency, including Hispanic Americans (up 31 percent) and African Americans (up 14 percent). This turnout increase worked decisively in favor of the Democratic Party as Asian Americans voted two to one for the party in both elections....from 2000 to 2019, “The Asian population in the U.S. grew 81 percent from roughly 10.5 million to a record 18.9 million, surpassing the 70 percent growth rate of the nation’s Hispanic population. Furthermore, by 2060, the number of U.S. Asians is projected to rise to 35.8 million, more than triple their 2000 population.....”

What this means is that Republicans are certain to intensify their use of affirmative action, crime, especially hate crime, and the movement away from merit testing to lotteries for admission to high-caliber public schools as wedge issues to try to pry Asian American voters away from the Democratic Party....The strong commitment of Asian Americans to education has been a source of allegiance to a Democratic Party that has become the preferred home for voters with college and advanced degrees. The progressive wing of the Democratic Party is, at the same time, testing the strength of that allegiance by supporting education policies that reduce opportunities for Asian Americans at elite schools while increasing opportunity for two larger Democratic constituencies, made up of Black and Hispanic voters.....

Chuck Todd asked him what he’d replace it with, and he had no answer. He clearly hadn’t thought it through in the slightest. Just spouting off mindlessly. Not presidential material in the slightest. If you’re a random dude on the street shouting “get rid of the FBI” then fine. But if you want to be president, you can’t just shut down the FBI and not have a plan for enforcing the law afterwards. He’s a blowhard: empty talking points with zero substance.
