I don't want us to be like Russia.  We are suppose to be a free country.  Free to speak our minds, live our lives, and follow whatever religion we want or don't want to.  I will always stand by the idea of, if you're not affecting others then it's not much of my business and you should be free to do so.

I have to admit that this question trips me up.  I think everyone should be free to do their own thing but I do agree that it's important to have one similar culture overall for our country.  I think the issue I have is I don't like culture forced upon people.

We're a melting pot, we always have been.  Our culture was uniquely formed through the melding of various cultures, mostly European, then Asian, now latino, etc.  We have always stood for individual freedoms, natural rights, and living with limited government and authoritarian interference.  When the govt makes self expression illegal, it goes against everything America stands for, it goes against our culture.  It's sad that people think the opposite.

I have no problems with patriotism and safe communities.  I'm sure we differ a bit on the first part, though.
