I had also seen a report saying that they had announced the fire was totally contained. The winds then whipped up, fire picked back up and hit like a freight train.

I was hearing something along those lines as well.  There are still ongoing fires in Kula (65% contained) and some on the Main island (unrelated?).  

Sadly I'm also reading now that Hawaii didn't do itself any favors when it moved away from Agriculture in favor of tourism and stopped harvesting sugar cane.  Those Sugar cane fields were replaced with "native grass" that was known to dry out and become a fire hazard.  Sounds like some environmental movements have been warning about this increased risk of fires for years, but little was done.

Oh man. Bad combo of so many things. In their favor is the islands are all so popular and people will want to rebuild the area.

It was already super touristy in this area but I’m sure how it will get rebuilt will be a bit contentious. Locals will want it a certain way.

I can see the rebuild being a whole new ugly chapter in this.  Some estimates are as high as 6 billion in insurance claims to rebuild 2,000 plus buildings.  That is going to be a long and expensive process.  I hope the insurance companies can actually take care of these people, but I worry even if they can make them whole again, the future premiums won't be affordable.

That is going to be a nightmare.

Places on the coast that are super nice, affluent that get hit by hurricanes run into the same thing I’d guess and in theory this is a once in a lifetime type thing.
