Dave Chappelle's Netflix special goes viral for blunt transgender comments

Im not exactly trying to make this political.  But it is quite telling when left and rights together were fans.  Now after subjects the left doesn't care for, the only people (or vast majority) that now say this are all left leaning people or liberal 2 cent vanity fair bloggers.

Ironic.  Maybe it is just coincidence.

For every liberal 2 cent vanity blogger roasting Chapelle there’s a rightie singing his praises because he makes fun of trans people.

I’d say Dave is winning at staying relevant because he’s not doing it by being funny anymore. :(

Fair observation.  Don't you think there is a trend in the reverse too and people on the right might be liking him more since he is one of the few lobbing shots at that community?   Like Tree of Knowledge said - it's funny to rile up the lefties and trannies.

Google his name and tell me how many rightie articles sing his praise.  Its 95% bashing.

It is quite obvious the lib bashers of him being unfunny do so over his content.  If he was the exact same amount of funny right now but without trans jokes, lefties wouldn't say a word about how he has fallen off.  Theyd probably flip script and say hes still as good as ever.

Yeah I can agree.  But I don't see it that much.  Like I said before the left and right both liked him.  Now one side doesnnearly as much.  And it is quite obvious it is because they don’t like the subjects.  They aren't allowed to laugh at those things today.

Libs also loathe seeing a black man rub any sort of shoulder with anything conservative.   Kayne was a brilliant artist to the left.  Then he rubbed a conservative shoulder and that whole side called him a loon.

Dave has been making fun of White people for over two decades and not a damn word from the left.  But somehow trannies are off limits and now they all hate Dave?  Yeah, this is ENTIRELY being driven by political dogma.

No, the problem with your argument is that conservatives were singing his praise the entire time. We never once hated Dave (like the left is doing now) over what he says.

That's fair.  I meant not so much that they didn't like him more, but think he's even funnier now that he's taking shots there.    You are right though, it's more the left having 0 tolerance for discussion about that topic.   I can't think of a more toxic topic for a comedian or speaker to address.   Maybe if Chapelle was doing jokes about Israel, maybe?

What I find interesting is he does a lot of jokes about them, but if you actually watch the whole special or a few of them, anybody with a brain can tell where they are coming from and it's not hatred - e.g. his story about the trans comedian.    I think he has one of the best descriptions of the issue with his LGBTQ in a car bit as well.   Like most things, people just rely on a 20clip online and look to get pissed off instead of actually trying to understand another POV or consume it all in context.

Similar to musicians, IMO.   Hard to do the same thing over and over - I mean how do you NOT let your life, money,  and experiences trickle into the material for better or worse?   They are not the same people they were 2 decades ago.

The only people who don't are the grumpy old Geek Clubbers b1tching about there being no good music to listen to since Dokken.

First thing I thought of reading this post…

This is an actor thing - method. It does seem odd but is not unusual. To your point that he was going from Ace Ventura to trying to do a serous role seems difficult.

You should try acting and get back to us how it works.

Imagine if Samuel L. Jackson needed to do this for some of his awful characters. Fock man, if I were him, I'd want to wash off whatever scumbag I was playing the moment the cameras stopped rolling, let alone go home and inflict that character on my family and friends.

Mr. Glass would have been tough.

Well, lets use the logic we now observe streaming from the Harvard President.

They object to him because he is black, and they are racist....not because of what he said or did....

The OP’s article and many Geeks act like Chapelle is a free speech martyr. :dunno:

There are some libs bashing Dave because they don’t like the trans stuff. But he’s also just not that funny anymore and I saw that as a huge fan of his show. Both things can be true.

When it arises that someone of color is introduced to accountability the immediate move is typically "its because they are black" and they are being treated differently....as is presently being done with the departing Harvard President....

SO....using that logic, these folks who are presently going after Chapelle....are doing it because he is black, and they are therefore racist....

Spot on. And I guess lackeys like MDC missed Eddie Murphy making fun of lgbtq 30-40 years ago.

People who actually watched the Chapelle Show know he made fun of black people wayyyy more than white people. And I’m not offended by his show I just don’t think he’s nearly as funny as he used to be. Neither is Eddie Murphy.

HTH!

See the problem with Chapelle on this subject is that he’s not making fun of how they talk or dress or behave, like so many others have. He’s pointing out that it’s complete nonsense that we are expected to go along with this bullshit. That’s his sin.

Watched it, the people who never understood Chappelle's comedy didn't like it. Not shocking.

It was good, audience at Rotten Tomatoes agreed.

It's comedy.  Never cancel comedy.  We have to be able to laugh at ourselves.  If you don't like it don't watch.

Once we cancel comedy then it's over.

Watched it yesterday. On par with the recent stuff IMO. Some laughs for sure. The bit about getting attacked on stage, Chris Rock, etc got me.

Quite a bit of fluff and self important eye rolling stuff as well. 20 mil an episode probably does that to you 😂

I haven’t seen this performance so I can’t comment specifically, but in general I disagree with your take. I believe that there are limits beyond which society should properly shun, and that includes comedy. The highest rated comedy radio show of the 1930s, for example, was Amos and Andy, in which two white dudes  pretended to be black and ridiculed black culture in an extremely racist manner. Such a program would not be aired today and rightfully so.
