Chicago-area Tesla charging stations lined with dead cars in freezing cold: 'A bunch of dead robots out here

Recommended Posts

Suckers. 😆

https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/chicago-area-tesla-charging-stations-lined-with-dead-cars-in-freezing-cold-a-bunch-of-dead-robots-out-here

Desperate Tesla owners in and around Chicago were seen trying to charge their vehicles with no luck amid frigid temperatures that have gripped the Midwest.

Charging stations have essentially turned into car graveyards in recent days as temperatures have dropped to the negative double digits, Fox Chicago reported.

"Nothing. No juice. Still on zero percent," Tyler Beard, who had been trying to recharge his Tesla at an Oak Brook, Illinois Tesla supercharging station since Sunday afternoon, told the news outlet. "And this is like three hours being out here after being out here three hours yesterday."

Beard and several other Tesla owners were trying to charge their cars amid long lines and abandoned cars at other Tesla charging stations in the Chicago area, the news station reported.

"This is crazy. It’s a disaster. Seriously," said Tesla owner Chalis Mizelle.

Mizelle said she abandoned her car and got a ride from a friend after hers would not charge.

"We got a bunch of dead robots out here," one man said.

Kevin Sumrak told the Fox station that he landed Sunday night at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and found his Tesla dead and unable to start. He was forced to hire a flatbed tow truck to haul the vehicle to a working charging station.

Tesla owners are the lamest people on earth.

Has nothing to do with Tesla owners and EVERYTHING to do with the limitations of the technology.  Other manufacturers are not immune to this issue.

Well thought out. Who’s idea was this to switch to EV’s everywhere as soon as possible?

This would suck hard.

Poor planning on these people’s part, like running out of gas / not knowing how the tech works in extreme cold.

5 mile commute would need probably about 1 hour 15 mins on a 110 outlet.

YMMV depending on factors - like cold weather, terrain you drove, how fast you went.

Horse face Kerry has refused to say what his staff, that we are paying for, makes. Why do I get the feeling there are some extremely overpaid gophers on that staff?

Yeah, they should have known their cars wouldn't have worked, AT ALL, when it gets cold.

These cars do work when it’s cold. It’s been below 32 for a few days now in my town and I have driven all over town. How is it possible?!?

Do you typically fill your car after driving 5 miles?

No.  I can drive many of 5 mile commutes on a tank of gas.  Then to fill it back up takes around 4 minutes.

I wonder if MSNBC and  rachel maddow showed the lies that came from these car companies on their networks?

Consumer Reports

CR Tests Show Electric Car Range Can Fall Far Short of Claims

Temperature and other driving conditions have an impact; Tesla doesn't meet range claims year round

In the case of an EV for typical day driving you would plug it in at home or at work when you aren’t using it so you don’t stop to “fill up” anywhere.

What if all the spots are taken at work?  What if you have no real means to put a charger at your house in a big city?  Drive to a charging station and read a whole book while you make your car have juice?

Sounds fun.

It takes use of the battery in an EV  to heat the cabin as well as the other issues.  As opposed to how ICEs work to warm it. .

This is an idea for a thread.  But you city geeks.....how many EV stations are at your workplace?

30 is cold I believe - below freezing and all. Kind of in the name.

If I lived where it was typically under say 20 degrees for long periods of time I would definitely do my research before  owning a current EV.  I think it’s doable but definitely limiting.

That would be limiting factors for buying an EV.

The way chargers work at my job is first come first serve. Once filled you start getting pestered to move your car by text. These are faster chargers so typically cars are good to go after a couple hours. People are good about moving.

I usually fill up but could go a few days without or not at all if plugging in at home. Try to do it at work though since it’s free.

I wish gangbangers would start driving EV’s. The charging stations would be a lot more interesting. Maybe some fly rapper can make it a thing with a rap about them and make it fashionable.

I think it was Car and Driver that did a 1200 mile test drive on a popular EV and kept a journal of the trip. The ups and downs of long distance travel. And it didn't sound that appealing at all in the end.

And they did that test in the summer. 😆

I have done hundreds of road trips with gas car, about prolly 30 in an EV. For the most part I prefer gas car for this.

A drive I know the route well and a good spot to stop when I’m not in a rush is probably the only way I’d prefer the EV experience.

Same reason people buy iPhones instead of a better alternative. They think it makes them look cool and it's trendy. No actual car guys buy those sh!tboxes. Same as people who are actually into tech build PCs and don't buy Macs.

You seem to end up paying less per mile when using them, and they are really great vehicles with excellent performance.  They are feature-rich and those features are intuitive.

If the costs were not so ridiculous I would buy one.
