There is nothing in the Constitution you love.  Nothing.  Open border immigration is not even in the Constitution.  And the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island had a thorough vetting process which immigrants had to go through.  It was not a rubber stamp open border crap which you worship.

So let’s return to the Ellis Island rules for everyone trying to come in. Agreed?

Strong words on abortion rights:

Quote

“It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government. Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes.

Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life.”

We weren’t a welfare state in 1907 with 6 trillion in annual federal spending. There wasn’t even a federal income tax. There were no Medicare/medicaid, social security disability, ebt, section 8, ssi, snap, wic, tanf, Obamacare etc but you know this fatboy.

According to historical records, approximately 12 million immigrants were processed at Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954 when it operated as the primary immigration station in the United States.

Ellis Island was in use for 62 years and processed 12M immigrants.  That's roughly 200K per year.

I'm glad we could reach agreement.

Adjust it for percentage of total population right?

That's an interesting point; the challenge is:  our population is currently significantly larger than it would be if we hadn't let millions upon millions of illegal immigrants in over the years, and their dreamer kids, etc.  It doesn't seem fair to include them in your justification to let more in.  :dunno:

Just stop all immigration until the numbers equal what they would be if immigration had happened at the appropriate rate.

For grins though I did some maths and googles.  1920 census population was 106M (chose it as roughly a midpoint of the Ellis Island window).  2022 population was 330M, call is 3X the 1920 population.  That's 600K immigrants per year.

The number of legal immigrants to the United States varies by year, but here are some recent statistics:

2022

Nearly 2.6 million people legally immigrated to the United States, which was more than any year from 2018 to 2021.

We already let 4X that number in legally.  So we cut that back to 600K and let no illegals in.

Deal!

The challenge is, we could let Millions of people in, there is plenty of room and open space.  If only they wanted to settle down and be farmers in bumF Iowa or South Dakota, but they all want to crowd big cities. Because who wants to live in bumF Iowa? Is that the American dream?  "I walked 1,000 miles to the border, crossed the Rio Grande at 2am and man, I can't wait to get to Des Moines".

The American dream now is to go to a big city and get on the welfare dime.

Fair enough.  I am a legal citizen.  I also live in a big city and have never met an Illegal Citizen, like not one.  I'm sure they exist and lay low and probably mow lawns and work as sous chefs and are paid under the table.   "Hi my name is Hector I'm here to rape your niece and get all the government freebies"   Haven't heard that one yet.

As I recall you’re of Asian heritage, right? I bet your parents or grandparents are glad the restrictions you want weren’t in place a few years ago.

Well the total population in 1880 was 50 million. Over the next 40 years we took in 20 million people- that’s 500,000 a year. Adjusting for population that means that nowadays we should take in 3 million people a year. I can live with that. Deal?

In the 1950’s my aunt was denied entry because she was told she had TB. She didn’t. Think we keep people out for carrying diseases now?

We do. Open up immigration and we can screen everyone.

Have you been to Des Moines?  It is lovely.  Clean air, clean water, clean streets not covered in feces.

Unless you count the livestock feces. There is quite a bit of that. Although it's certainly not exclusive to the streets of Des Moines.

I’m currently wandering around the Ben Franklin House in Philadelphia. Here’s what he had to say about immigration:

You continually equate illegal and legal immigration

I actually have.  I kinda liked it. There was Mardi Gras party downtown for some reason.  I was just saying, maybe more immigrants should WANT to or be DIRECTED to go to go the Des Moines and not Los Angeles.

And they keep ignoring the fact that the Haitians in Springfield came here legally and at the invitation of the mayor/city.

They’re not committing crimes. And Trump wants all of them deported. And he won’t stop there.

Your analysis is faulty.  I didn't use the end, I used the middle of the Ellis Island window.  And I already showed that the population was double your number in 1920 -- that's mostly internal growth, given the numbers involved.

I also don't believe your unsubstantiated number.  We let in far fewer people from the west coast than the east, since we almost exclusively let in white Europeans.

But I'm feeling gracious, I'll double my number:  1.2M total immigrants per year.  That's half of what we currently let in legally, so no illegal immigrants.

And since this started with your Ellis Island model, we'll use the rules back then, including:  no welfare, no government assistance, no translator services.  Succeed, leave, or die.

Deal!

You did use the end in reality since it was in the early 1920s that all immigration basically stopped. Ellis Island was still open (my father came there in 1950) but it was tightly controlled.

As far as this part goes I’m not opposed. But I would point out that this is already the way it is for almost all undocumented immigrants.
