People from your own administration, Generals who worked for you, your CoS, etc calling you Hitler is kind of rare. Your previous VP not supporting you, yeah kind of weird. It’s not just the Dems.

You choose not to believe him because there is probably a small portion of your soul deep down that still has some goodness to it.  You're not yet completely dead inside.  So that portion of your being that still believes in fairness, honesty, integrity, high morals, it has a hard time reconciling with you voting for a complete monster.  So you tell yourself "Oh he didn't mean it, he's not really going to do that, it's OK I can still vote for him"

Well sure, but I really don't care about that. I mean, the failure to accept that their policies are not working and are a problem is the reason their policies are not working and a problem.  Rather than face down the problems they have, and fix them, they instead suggest " oh it must be because of [insert socialBS}"  They cannot improve or make things better because they cannot self-criticize.
