LIBERATION DAY: USA and China agree to a 90 day pause on most new tariffs

Recommended Posts

Trump caved again and went down to a 30% tax on China goods and China went down to a 10% tax on our goods.

So instead of empty shelves we now just have to pay 30% more?  Will China still buy from American farmers or have they been replaced?  What happened to bringing jobs back or replacing income tax with tariffs tax?  So many questions.

Another day in the clown show and a weak idiot president who has no idea what he's doing

At the beginning of Trump's first term, US Tariffs on China were 3.1%. By the end of Trump's term US Tariffs on China were 19.3% where they remained during the Biden administration. China increased Tariffs on the US during the same time from  8.3% to 21.1%.

Trump's second term. US Tariffs on China increase to 147%. China tariffs on US increase to 124%.

Trump's new deal: US tariffs on China = 30% while China tariffs on US = 10%.

Seems like another huge win for Trump and the United States.

You've got some errors in your post.  The first trump term did not have a 19.3% tariff across the board.  That might be the highest rate on targeted goods but not the average.

To put it more simply, trump raised tariffs to 145%, China retaliated.  Trump caved and lowered tariffs to 30% and got nothing in return.

But yeah huge win that we pay 30% more for Chinese goods and our farmers likely need to get a bail out.

To put it in context, your chart shows a ~20% rate of ~65% of goods, a 13% rate and even this seems a little high given some of the schedules.  Most economists had us under 10%.

I still don't see how this is a win.  What did we get?

This is great news and a huge relief. But 30% is still too high. And is 10% from China an improvement on what they had prior to Liberation Day? I can’t seem to get a clear answer on that, but it sure sounds like no. Which means there was no point to this entire endeavor. But at least it looks to be over.

Its not over.  This is a 90 day pause, nothing was achieved, trump can decide at any time he wants higher tariffs again, 30% across the board is still too high.

It’s all bullshit. Create a crisis, fix the crisis. Claim big victories. Rinse and repeat!

I’ll take the gains, thank you very much.

It's a meme market.  We got hit with a 30% tax, small business is collapsing, 90 day pause means more uncertainty. BUY BUY BUY

I see a lot of people making fun or Trump for this.  I don't really see why.  It looks good that he lowered the tariffs all while keeping them higher than they use to be.  I'm interested in seeing how this plays out.

Was that the goal?  To get tariffs on China a little higher?

Because it minimizes the impact but keeps them at a level that incentivizes China to continue productive talks, with a 90 day deadline where the higher tariffs could be reinstated.   This really isn't that complicated.

So by all accounts that aren’t deranged it appears China caved and they went into submission like the rest of the world

Better question comrade, is why would it NOT look good to you? It is a win/win for us unless you hate the president winning so much you cannot see that. (which is a pretty good possibility)

This has been talked about over and over again in this thread.  You can go reread.

I've read it all.  We want to bring jobs back, we want to raise revenue, we want a trade surplus....  It changes every week.

This is not a deal, this is just Trump backing off his tariff rate but keeping enough on to save face for another 90 days.  Meanwhile we get a price hike.

Not me.

My take on that is how do tariffs overcome global shipping and that people will do this labor for like 1/20th the cost. It can’t.

It’s not that complicated because it makes no sense. If 30% tariffs incentivizes China (dubious but let’s accept the premise for now) then we didn’t need 145% tariffs, and all the shortages that have already started and are coming our way no matter what happens now. In addition if the purpose of the tariffs was to get China to lower theirs (which as yet hasn’t happened and is unclear if it ever will) then what about the goal to bring manufacturing back to the USA? You can’t have both.

Occam’s Razor tells me that Trump started this whole mess because of a stupid belief in tariffs, it blew up in his face, and he’s backing off. That’s a relief but we’re supposed to congratulate him for it? Really?

Of course not.  But if that's all they're qualified to do we should still allow them to be productive and earn a living.

Again, nonsensical response. How is this a win? At best it’s a “we’re not going to lose quite as badly as we would have” and even that’s a question.

I think the simpler answer is that Trump is a world-class attention wh0re and just likes shaking things up for no reason. He’s a Reality TV star and WWE heel playing POTUS.

And there are plenty of jobs for them now.  We have almost half a million open manufacturing jobs right now.  We have even more low skill service jobs open as well.

There are 7.2 million men in their prime working age CHOOSING not to be employed in the U.S..  We need more trades jobs and manufacturing -  the jobs that created the middle class in this country.  And then you libs wonder why the middle class is shrinking.

The other day claimed we were losing trillions to China and that not trading with them was actually good!

I guess we are back to losing again for a few months 😂

The middle class is shrinking because a lot of jobs like manufacturing no longer pay a living wage, in part because far fewer of them are unionized.

If someone chooses not to work, you want to force them to make iphones?  WTF  If you choose not to work, good for you.

We have open manufacturing.  We should incentivize more.  We should create a pro business climate to create more jobs.

We have a shortage of electricians, plumbers, auto mechanics, etc.  We need more trade people, not more jobs.  Ever try and find an electrician these days?

The problem is that wages haven't keep up with rising costs.  Housing is too expensive.  Taxes are too high.

Trump just agreed to a 30% tax hike with no jobs created.  And you magas wonder why the smart people aren't applauding with you.

Liberals want it gone, never mind shrunk. All the globalists do.
