LIBERATION DAY: USA and China agree to a 90 day pause on most new tariffs

They are either going to have to lower their prices to negate some of the tariff or they are going to lose a lot of sales from the US.

Why does anyone buy anything made in Vietnam?  Because it's dirt cheap.  If it's not longer dirt cheap, why would anyone buy it?

Even with the tariffs it will almost assuredly be cheaper than stuff made in America. It will just cost more.

Look if someone goes to Walmart and buys a 10 dollar shirt made in Vietnam it will now cost like 12 dollars (in the most roughest simplest math way)....That same shirt is probably still like 14-15 American....so people will pay more than before but still "save" money.

So what you’re saying is that they will absorb the price? Not gonna happen. Vietnam doesn’t sell directly to US consumers. They sell to vendors/importers, who will have no choice but to raise their prices.

So the net result is higher costs for US consumers?

If you actually purchase the product.  The beautiful thing is that we get to choose to buy whatever we want.  I prefer there be an incentive to making more things in the US and buying more products in the US.

In most cases, yes.  I never said it didn't.  We don't pay an increase unless we actually buy that product.

You didn’t, but Trump campaigned on lowering prices. Maybe that’s why his approval rating is so low?

So far he's accomplished a decent amount of what he said he would do and what I wanted done.  Prices have not declined drastically like he said but they have not increased drastically either.  My biggest complaint is with his spending and adding to the deficit.

Now they're not.  They can't.  We can't tax Vietnam.  Don't be stupid.

The margin on clothing is under 20% for wholesalers.  Vietnam is not going to sell to wholesalers at cost.  Maybe the retailers take a haircut.  But either way Vietnam is not paying the tax.  That's idiotic.

Trump himself said he won by campaigning on costs. Now we learn that not only won’t he lower costs, his policies will raise them. It’s no wonder his approval rating is so low.

Lol we should have scared people more. Then maybe they would have pressured Trump to back off. Now it’s probably too late.

Thanks? I don't need this advice, I'm typically pretty honest and prefer to not lie.

Now, if you..... were referring to my prior post..... in which I called you out for hypocrisy..... and...... in response...... you are now calling me a liar.....

I would laugh. Because this:

Is hypocritical gold. You rarely, if ever, admit being wrong. Even when you're dead to rights. And scaring people needlessly, which you seem to be speaking against in your post, is like half the platform of your boy Trump, who you defend endlessly. So it logically follows...... that you either don't have a real problem with terrorizing innocent people for no good reason...... or I surmise that you are grossly unaware of the contradictions within your beliefs...... hence a lack of self awareness.

End game: China & Xi humiliate Trump.

Results: China now buys far fewer soybeans & other Agricultural products.

- China has increased its access to the US’s highest & best technology.

- Total lack of movement on Taiwan.

US citizens continue to pay exorbitant VAT taxes aka tariffs that didn’t exist before for a market we created but which have now surrendered to competitors, many of which used to be our trade allies.

- The Wuhan Virus bio lab was always a joke claim & Trump didn’t even raise the supposed act of war.

Robert Reich is involved with that. Might as well post something from the Lincoln proj pedos. The guy who wrote it is in his 80s.  The bullet points aren’t from the article and Wuhan/covid isn’t even mentioned in the article. This is an example of why I usually just scroll by almost anything posted by him. It’s a real sickness. All roads lead to TDS

There is no good analysis of this deal. I’m not even sure it’s even a deal considering it’s not comprehensive.

Which is why they aren’t arguing any of the points you raised. They’re just trashing the source and claiming you have TDS. They don’t want to actually discuss it because they have nothing to offer.

You've been quite demanding lately.  How about you start by defending those bullets?

- What highest and best tech?  If AI chips, there is a strategic reason.

- What movement does this progressive rag expect?  Did China invade Taiwan?

- What is the significance of this Covid word salad?

TIA!

The article linked explains the first two points. Saints explained the part on Covid. So I don't think I need to defend anything because the arguments are already there. If you disagree with them, then explain why.

Once again you haven't read the link.  The "best" technology was AI chips as expected.  But the best, the Blackwell chips, are off the table... "for now" (says the TDS progressive rag).  Regardless, the "best" was specifically NOT provided to China.  So this bullet is a categorical lie.

Quote

The even bigger concern was that Trump would allow the sale of Nvidia’s most advanced semiconductors, its Blackwell chips, to China. As Trump flew to South Korea on Wednesday to meet Xi, he told reporters, “We’ll be speaking about Blackwell.” Mr. Trump called the technology a “super-duper chip” and complimented Nvidia’s chief executive, Jensen Huang.

After extensive pushback from leaders of both parties and blindsided national-security advisers, Trump took Blackwell chips off the negotiating table—for now.

Address this before we move on.

To claim it’s a categorical lie is a real stretch; you sound like @Strike here. My understanding is that what China got out of this in AI is good enough; they’re not displeased. If you want to point out that it’s not the “best”, fine. I don’t see this as significant though I make no claim to being an expert on this technology.

Next? (You need to hurry if you want quick responses; I’m in between games and will not post during Mahomes vs Allen.)

It's not a stretch.  The claim is that we gave them the best.  We didn't.  You might find that a quibble, but it's actually the strategy.  A lot of experts think it is in our strategic interest to give them good enough AI tech, but not the latest greatest.  The argument is that if we don't give them anything, they will spend money until they catch up.  This way, they aren't as motivated to do that, but they never quite catch up to us.

You can argue with this strategy, but it is a strategy, and from the article it is what we are doing.  But your TDS-infested leftist progressive rag probably doesn't know that, nor does @SaintsInDome2006, nor did you until now.  Now you do.  So the summary is wrong on multiple levels -- we did NOT give them the best, and what we are giving them are for strategic reasons.

Let me know if you understand this, take the L, and we can move on to the next bullet.

I understand your argument. I am HIGHLY skeptical that Trump understands it. My strong suspicion is that, as in so many other instances, you and other Trump supporters come up with nuanced arguments to explain what he decided on the whim of the moment.

That being said I will accept your argument because as I wrote earlier I don’t understand enough of this to comment otherwise. And if it benefits the United States I’ll take it, it’s not an L for me.

This is a little odd - I’m not excluding all your other comments but the Prospect raised two issues, both of which have been well reported elsewhere.

- One is the expanded export licensing controls. There has been a loophole in older regulations that has been permitting out competitors & adversaries to access some of our best technology. We belatedly finally tightened that loophole a couple weeks ago, but for some reason - it has no connection to trade, nor should it - it was tethered to Trump’s trade discussions and was delayed another year. Totally, pointless, useless, self defeating. It never should have been a part of the discussions. But Trump *loves getting dragged into “deals” which just allows our adversaries to play him every time by engaging him with horse trading on unlinked matters.

- The *other issue, which you do raise, has to do with the US’s Blackwell chips. Here’s the reputed nephew of an MIT professor who also had to get backdoored into Fordham discussing his sophisticated understanding of this technology. - There was even less than ZERO reason for dragging this onto the table. I’d have to think even the likes of Rubio & Bessent had to claw it back off the table to keep Trump from giving it away to ‘his friend’ Xi. All we did was dodge a bullet there. We got to keep a thing we already own but it sounds like it’s being treated as some sort of win by the Ballroom Presidency & lord knows what we surrendered for that privilege..

That’s right, it’s strategic vagueness. What’s ridiculous is saying, 1. Xi didn’t raise it, but also 2. China knows which means we’ve told them, and also 3. Trump can’t enunciate it because while China knows it’s also a secret.
