Packers submit proposal to ban "tush push"

Recommended Posts

Figured Id post it.  Just to hear shlt.

I know Mark Murphy Packers President mentioned he didnt like it recently.

And I myself am on board.  Cant stand the tush push.

It isnt because its "automatic".

1. It dumbs the game down and ruins any flow.

2. As seen in the Bills Chiefs game, Allen just runs it 10 times.  Then a controversial spot happens.  Yeah lets leave it more up to refs and a spot call when you cant even see the QB let alone the ball in many instances.

3.  Its ghey

4.  Yeah hey lets protect QBs. But lets have QBs barrel into 300lb men, being pushed, with little control over their body.  But hey if a defender comes in and hits their head lets call a flag.

It wasnt legal 20 years ago.  Not sure how making it legal "improved the game".

It will stick.  I hope defenders start head hunting.  I am 36 but I am old school.

Packers actually were like 9 of 10 using a version of it.  They bring Kraft in motion and he goes under center.

No its not that.  Its just ghey.  Lets just turn it into rugby.  Not sure how a tush push is exciting on an level.

Not to mention the Allen tush push where I dont blame the refs, you cant see crap.  Did he get it?  I dont know.  I thought he did but you cant tell.  Lets rely on a refs 50 50 call more!

Im a Packers fan bit root for the Bills hard out of the AFC.  So its not like I have zero skin in the tush push game.  I just think its stupid.

There should just make one change.

If team start pushing a player forward it nullifies forward progress, and the defense can also push a runner backwards as long as his knee does not touch. If they are at the 2 and the D holds the runner up and shoves him back to the 6 that is where the spot is.

I understand your post.  But for decades it was illegal.  It brings nothing to the game but fumb it down.  Create spot controversy.  And really goes against any "protect the qb" crap they push.

Ill compromise.  The tush push can stay if they are allowed to treat QBs like runners, which by rule are supposed to but never do.  If Lamar gets tackled half out of bounds 12 yards down the field people are up in arms.  If henry is tackled same way same sort run, no one bats an eye.  Is a QB a runner or not when he not only is out of the pocket but it past the line?

And Packers losing to Eagles has little to do with it.  Packers lost TO battle 4-0.  Eagles scored a whopping 22 pts with that.

League is already 2 high shell that has ruined downfield passing.  Hey lets have scrums 10 times a game on pushes as well!   NFL hardly cares.  Thry could go out there with flag football rec players and it would sell.

I am fine with them banning the tush push. Was shocked when they didn't last off-season.

And 100% they should get rid of the slide (after you pass line of scrimmage)

It's the only way the Iggles win - by cheating.  Assisting the runner should have always been illegal.  Hell, if they're going to tush push why not just have your 3 biggest guys on the Oline grab the QB and throw him over the line?

So, Eagles cheat to win.

Yeah and thats a good point.  Ive seen forward progress stopped so quickly.  Yet a QB can be stood up for 2 seconds and thr play goes on?  Make it make sense.

How old are you? It used to be a penalty when an offensive lineman (maybe all offensive players) would push a player with the ball. Not sure why they got rid of it,

I still don't know what they consider a catch sometimes, or a "football move"

Oh I agree.  But I have seen forward progress stopped so quickly.  Why does it not apply on a tush push?  Just make it make sense is all.

Forward progress annoys me too. WR catches the ball, running back towards the QB. Catches it and defender doesn't touch him, his momentum takes him back 3 yards, they give it to him where he caught it. HUH??

I dont agree lol.  I say maximize the rules.  I think its just a dumb play that adds nothing for thr viewer.  And at thr heart like was pointed out, makes no sense in the forward progress realm.  But Ive accepted that thr NFL just has dumb rules to create a talk point.

Pushing/pulling was illegal for decades until the early 2000's, when the pushing part was removed. The logic - refs were throwing flags indiscriminately because they couldn't always tell for sure who was pushing who. After it was removed, nobody really noticed ... until the Eagles suddenly found a way to exploit it and had the personnel to do it.

If they make pushing illegal again, they'll have the same problem they used to.  At this point, I say leave it be. Defenses will eventually figure out a way to stop it - like they always do.  And it's not that big of deal - "it ain't football"... meh, looks like football to me. And I'm certainly no Philly fan.

Just require that the running backs line up deeper. Gives the defense a chance.

A qb can scrum and get pushed for 4 yards.  Counts.

A qb can scrum get pushed back 4 yards and its where he stopped momentum.

Just please make it make sense.  Its a stupid play if anyone want to be logical.

I dont care that it works.   As much as anyone will say a Packers fan does.

Just make some sense of it.  You cant.  You only bring in more subjective calls which everyone complains about.

If forward progress is a rule.  Then call it.   Its simple.  The poster earlier had it right.  Its not that hard if we actually want written rules to be real.

If they keep the rule then midget tossing should be allowed for first downs and goal line. Teams should start having one or two on their roster.

I say the Eagles can't win w/out cheating.  FACTZ!!!!!!

Worst fanbase in all of professional sports hands down.  It makes sense they can't win w/out cheating.  Their only two championships have an asterisk next to them - as they should.

If I had to wait until I was in my 50’s to see my team win their second Super Bowl would have really sucked.  Congrats Eagles!

Or, ban the play because:

a) it was always illegal up until recently when lack of enforcement kind of brought it to life.

b) It’s not a play that adds any level of excitement or entertainment to the game.

Right.  I mean, assisting the runner is okay now?  Why don't they just pick up Hurts and throw him over the pile into the endzone then?  Just launch him like a rocket.

How is that illegal but pushing him from behind isn't?  So, yeah, it's cheating.

I hate to break the news but it's LEGAL for 31 other teams as well. I'm not sure why you're hyper focused on the Eagles.

I dunno, when I see it, I wonder if the defense will be able to stop it.

I have no dog in this fight because my team (Cardinals) has an Oompa Loompa at QB, so we'll never do it.  And it seems like sour grapes from teams that don't have a QB who can squat 600 pounds.

But I do find it funny that the NFL pretends to care about QB safety, and yet allow this type of play.  Also, there are other plays where the NFL outlaws similar assistance that don't involve QBs (defense jumping on lineman to block a kick, for instance).

It will end when somebody throws an elbow at Hurts' head and knocks him out.  Then the NFL will cry "my QB safety$#@!"

Not going?  They weren't even invited.

I wouldn't want to go either after tush-pushing-cheating my way to a SB win.  And if I was Trump, I wouldn't want the stain of cheaters in my WH  anyways - probably why they weren't invited.

Agree with Murphy that it's a no skill play to gain 1 to 1.5 yards. But kudo's to the Eagles for coming up with the play. Apparently there was a rule regulating but was removed in 2005, they found a loophole and took advantage. Close the loophole. The limited info I read said they removed the rule because it was too hard/judgement call to make---the tush push isn't really that hard to call. Reinstated the previous rule - all good.

Quote

The NFL once banned the assisting of a ball carrier via pushing, pulling or carrying, but in 2005 the league lifted the ban for pushing. For some reason it really didn't catch on — the pushing of the ball carrier by his own teammates — until this season.
