India-Pakistan: 125 Jets Clash in One of Largest Dogfights in Recent History

Recommended Posts

Some 125 Indian and Pakistani fighter jets battled for over an hour in one of the biggest dogfights in recent history, according to a Pakistani security source quoted by CNN.

If the numbers of aircraft were confirmed, it would make it one of the largest air battles since World War Two.

Newsweek has reached out to the Indian and Pakistani governments for comment.

Why It Matters

The scale of the dogfight on Wednesday underscores the intensity of the conflict between the two nuclear-armed rivals—both of which possess some of the world's largest conventional military forces—and highlights the implications of any further escalation should diplomatic efforts fail to ease tensions that erupted after an attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir.

What To Know

The "dog fight" between Pakistani and Indian fighter jets, which Pakistani officials say downed five Indian planes, was one of the "largest and longest in recent aviation history," a senior Pakistani security source told CNN. The Pakistani claim has not been corroborated and could not be immediately verified by Newsweek.

A total of 125 fighter jets engaged in an hour-long aerial battle, with both sides confined to their own airspace as long-range missiles were exchanged at distances surpassing 100 miles, CNN said.

I would not term the encounter a dog fight.  I always thought of a dog fight as being when the combatants were at least close enough to see each other if not within a few hundred yards or less.  I think of it as them mixing it up, flying in among each other, not at 100 mile distances detecting each other on radar.

Looks like India gets its fighters from France and Russia. Looks like Pakistan gets them from the U.S,. China, France, sweden, and that they manufacture some themselves.

It's modern day dog fighting.

Football from the 60's doesn't look like football today but it's still football.

I guess I'm old and out of touch and in the way.  I romanticise dog fighting as WWI and WWII pilots getting up close and personal.  Growing up I had a neighbor I use to do chores for.  An unassuming guy from my youthful view.  They had a late in life kid and asked me to babysit a few times.  The first time I went in their house I saw a bunch of pictures of WWII fighter planes.  Then I saw a plaque with a bunch of medals.  I asked my Dad about it.  He said yes, didn't you know he was an Ace?  I didn't.  My impression of the guy changed right there.

With the planes separated by over 100 miles to me it is a defensive screen of air to air missle platforms.  I want my dogfighters to see the whites of their eyes, so to speak.  Still, it is just semantics and I get that terms evolve faster than do I.

I’d be interested to know the variety of planes involved I bet it’s a real hodgepodge of old Soviet, US & Euro jets.

Well, things have changed a wee bit. Ships don't shoot cannonballs at each other anymore either.

This is why they make movies. The Patriot was good.

Calling a BVR missile slinging contest a "dogfight" means a SAM fired at an aircraft is a "dogfight". Modern day air combat "dogfighting" does exist......it's either close visual range heat seekers like the sidewinder or guns.

If a modern plane gets in a close air dogfight, something went wrong.  5th Gen fighters aren't as maneuverable as the likes of the F16 regardless of what you may have seen on top gun and the 5th Gen fighters wouldnt be a favorite close in.  What makes the 5th Gen deadly is stealth and long range radar.  They are built to kill the enemy before they even know they're there.

Firing missiles 100 miles out isn't a dogfight though.

After seeing Indians and Pakis drive can only imagine how they fly planes.

I have no idea where you are getting your info but PLEASE put down the crack pipe🙄

An aircraft  like the F22 with THRUST VECTORING will destroy an aircraft like the F16........this is not only a KNOWN FACT but pretty common knowledge.

Not surprising to see pro war places like CNN try to constantly stoke the flames of war.

Trump says there is a ceasefire. Hopefully it holds.

Indian source says both sides worked "directly" on truce after Trump says US mediated

A source on the Indian side said the agreement to halt all military activity was worked out “directly between” India and Pakistan, despite US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the ceasefire was the result of a night of US mediation.

“The stoppage of firing and military action between India and Pakistan was worked out directly between the two countries,” the source said.

In a post on X, External Affairs Minister of India Subrahmanyam Jaishankar also said that “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action.” He and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke earlier in the day.

On the Pakistani side, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in an X post shortly after Trump’s announcement that “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect.” Rubio held a call with Dar as well.

Who, Trump?

What was he doing when creepy joe was sending 100s of billions of dollars to Europe to fuel a war? Was that funny too?

My dad was in the navy in WW2, and his dad was in the infantry in WW1 and got the purple heart after being shot.

A lot of cool stories. But the stories are different now in the sense that it's evolved technology.

We have been saying for a while now that there is a push by the deep state to increase conflict. Trump wants to put a stop to it. He also has people around the world who have the same goals.

Him and Scavino reference Sum of All Fears quite often for a reason.

For some reason liberals feel good about themselves when other nations are at war. To the point of trying to keep them going strong.

You forgetting something?

"But a Pakistani government source familiar with the negotiations told CNN that the US — and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in particular — played a crucial role in getting both sides to agree."

It's almost as if you guys will believe ANYTHING but the truth.  C'mon, Honcho.  You're better than that.  I know you can objectively look at a situation.  Don't play into the propaganda.  The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

If turns out that Rubio & the US was involved, I'll admit I was wrong without the need to get others to do or say anything.  ;)

As more of the story comes out, I was wrong in mocking Trump(his administration really)for claiming credit. It's seems that the State Dept and Rubio did quite a bit in the moving this along-Kudos to them.

I have a feeling that if we knew how much Trump was doing to reach peace behind the scenes, it would shock a lot of people.

Hey, he admitted he was wrong.  Let's give him kudos for that instead of mocking him.  It takes a lot to admit you're wrong, especially on this board.  Your response would be EXACTLY why no one would ever admit they were wrong.

Nah

Yah.....F22, SU30 SU35, SU57.

Raphael & Typhoon pretty maneuverable to but no thrust vectoring. F16 is a very good multi-role aircraft but at a severe disadvantage in a dogfight against a thrust vectoring fighter.

There is a reason the F22 isn't sold to ANYONE....it's the total package...stealth, thrust-vectoring, speed, radar & targeting. It will kill you from 80 miles out or from your kitchen counter.
