Rhode Island capital to hoist Palestinian flag at city hall, citing diversity

Recommended Posts

Yeah, all those countries should be celebrated. But yet all the people that are from those countries that came here, came here because of why...? WTF would they come here to celebrate their source countries that they all left?

Providence, Rhode Island, officials have accepted a request to fly the Palestinian flag Friday at City Hall in the state's capital.

City officials emphasized that no American flags are being displaced by the display, adding there have been several other flags raised over the government office in the past.

"Providence City Hall displays many different flags throughout the year to mark different occasions and honor the many ethnic and cultural backgrounds and traditions that make our city strong," a spokesperson for Providence City Council told Fox News Digital Wednesday.

The spokesperson added the city has also flown the Dominican flag, Irish flag, Armenian flag and the Israeli flag in recent months.

"Like those examples, this idea came to us from the community as part of a request to honor the important role Palestinian-Americans play in the fabric of our beautifully diverse city," the spokesperson said.

Council President Rachel Miller will display the flag during Thursday’s city council meeting and then outside City Hall Friday.

When asked about the decision, a representative for Democratic Mayor Brett Smiley suggested the ceremony was the city council’s prerogative.

"In Providence, the executive branch and City Council are two separate branches of government. The Providence City Council, not Mayor Smiley’s office, will be raising the Palestinian flag on Friday," said Josh Estrella, a spokesman for Smiley.

There is ZERO diversity in Palestine, their culture is diametrically opposed to what these morons represent.

Palestinians are not making Providence better.  They will make it worse if enough show up.  Not that many are necessary.

Yeah. Palestine and Ireland are about the same. I remember the IRA slaughtering people at a rock concert and raping girls  before killing them and parading the bodies around, hoisting severed heads.

Mayor Smiley graduated from DePaul University and lives on Hope Street with his husband, Jim DeRentis. Both Brett and Jim are avid runners who share a deep love for Providence.

Queers for Palestine! lol.

Flying a flag over a government building use to indicate which government reigned in that area.  The practice goes back hundreds if not thousands of years.  It is a claim of authority over the building, region, and citizens or residents.  It was, and probably still should be a claim of soveriegnty.  Raising a foriegn flag over government buildings flys in the face of that tradition.  If this City wishes to honor their palestinian residents for their contribution to the City fine.  Have a City sponsored Palestinian residents day.  Welcome them to the City grounds.  Let them set up booths for food, products, and teaching moments.  Let them bring their flags if they choose, but do not fly a foriegn entity's flag over your building.

BTW I hope the City has a published, cogent, content neutral policy for application for and flying of flags, officially, since that is government speech.

I personally don't care that the city wants to do this.  I think they're ignorant for it, but they can do what they want.  If I were a citizen of the city, I'd vote out those who were in favor of it.  Otherwise, if the idiots of that city are for it, I'm not going to stop them.

Now, if they're flying the flag higher than Rhode Island's state flag or the US flag, then that just shows how out of touch with "America" they are and why communists shouldn't be elected into public office.

If biological males created a biological male flag, say a , rampant, on a field of azure, and they asked the City to display it, to fly it at a Council meeting and over the building for a day, would the City do so?  If not, why not?  Would they be regulating the content of speech?  Would they be ranking the value they place on citizens in different demographic groups.

There is no reason for local governments to voluntarily test these waters.  They should stay in their lane.  Virtue signalling is a waste of taxpayer resources.  I know poplitcians cannot help themselves, but they need to learn to do so.
