WNBA expanding again...

Thinking about this some more, @TBayXXXVII should apologize for this gross misrepresentation. I mean, look at the facts. Someone eloquently shared that the WNBA had better ratings than the NBA. And then Tbay lies that the NBA ratings are very very significantly better when they are merely very significantly better. F'n Tbay !

🤣

Well, like I said, it's not a big deal and I agree with TBay's main point regardless (and generally he is one of the posters I like around here)... but since there was back and forth bickering and this is a message board, I felt compelled to point out that TimHack, oddly, wasn't wrong.

As for the real topic at hand, my initial reaction was "way to start gaining a little traction and success only to immediately decide to water down the product".  As I thought about it more, I can see some validity to feeling like this may be the best opportunity to expand into certain markets like Philly and Cleveland. I think it's a missed opportunity not to be expanding to Boston. Some of the women gaining popularity right now all seem to be straight white women such as Clark, Beuckers, Van Lith, Cunningham.  Boston would seem like the best area to expand.

Granted, liberals would rather a biological man be the face of womens sports than a straight white female.

In startups that don't make money employees often get compensated with stock options.  Perhaps the league could issue options for future profit sharing.  Then if the league continues to lose money, the options become worthless.  If the players are truly owed additional compensation, then their labor should eventually lead to a profitable product and they can collect.  otherwise, they're not "owed" additional compensation.

Interesting analysis here:

https://x.com/adukeMN/status/1946736924821262723

I know this will be a firestorm topic WNBA players currently receive just 9.3% of the leagues revenue(this includes ticket sales, merch, TV deals) for reference their male counterparts in the NBA is 50.0%.

This resulted in their salary cap being set at just 1.507 million for this year(less than half of Joe Ingles 3.634M)

In theory if they received even 40% of the leagues revenue that salary cap would be at 6.481 M.

That increase would mean roster expansion could occur, players could theoretically still make 3x their current salary and owners would still bring in 60% of the revenue.

Now to put that into perspective, that still means an entire WNBA roster would be paid less than Rob Dillingham will make in 2025-26(6.576M) ——————————

Now yes, the WNBA did lose 40 million dollars in 2024, but this is in large part due to the TV deal they are currently signed to, which in 2026 goes from roughly 45 Million annually to 200 Million annually.

This will result in essence result in the league making money over night from losing 40 to a net gain of 115M just on the TV deal alone. Even if the game and tickets sales were to stop growing, and merch stopped selling, it would still be in the green.

What's interesting about it.  Do you understand the difference between the words revenue and profit?

Did you read it?  It talks about profit and how the current lack of one is due to their TV deal, and that next season they project to make a profit of at least $115MM.  I assume the negotiating the players want to do would apply to next season

Then the players should negotiate on the profit number, not the revenue number.  And if the WNBA doesn't turn a profit they don't get paid.  Or, to be legal, they get minimum wage.  Seems fair to me.

Wait for it

The WNBA has had one openly transgender and nonbinary player, Layshia Clarendon, who played for several teams and retired in 2024. Clarendon, who uses she/her, he/him, and they/them pronouns, was the first openly non-binary player in the league and also the first to have top surgery. While there are no other publicly known transgender women playing in the WNBA currently, the league has been recognized as progressive in its inclusion of LGBTQ+ players, with an estimated 20% of rosters having publicly out LGBTQ+ members, according to Out Sports.

They don't currently.  No other sports union does so.  I think it's a reasonable assumption.  If you have evidence to the contrary I'm willing to see it.  Don't make this one of your hills to die on though.

To be honest, I was pretty confident that the entire WNBA was about 95% lesbian. There is simply no way it's got to be less than that.

And like I've said on numerous occasions, women have been on the forefront of this tranny absurdity so unfortunately they're going to eliminate themselves from the wnba at some point.

And with sex robots coming soon, it's just going to get worse for them.

As a league you cant support Trannies then tell them they cant play. Let Trannies play, it's only fair 🌈

So if no other league does why would you expect the WNBA to?  I get the argument about not paying them unless they make a profit, but again, reportedly they should actually make a profit next year, so now seems like a good time to try to negotiate.

Y'know, nobody likes this league anyways so why do we even have it?  Nobody watches it, ESPECIALLY women.  And they're constantly whining and emotional.

This really isn't worth the time, effort and money to have something like this.  The players themselves are ruining it.

I say shut it all down and make them get real jobs.  Maybe then they'll realize how good they have it.

You go pay their salaries, otherwise, screw off. They are useless in every way shape and form.
