The State Department’s Refugee Admissions Program tracks how many refugees the U.S. admits every month. Since Trump signed an executive order suspending entry into the U.S. under the program, only a handful of refugees have been admitted from three countries: Afghanistan, El Salvador, and South Africa.

Thousands of Somali refugees entered the country in the first months of fiscal year 2025, however, which began on Oct. 1, 2024. The program records the admission of 4,992 Somali refugees from October through January.

Over the years, the state (DFL) has told us that the Somali people turn into a huge windfall for the state after 20 years. They admit spending approximately 110 K on each one in the early years, but also say that all those costs and more are recouped after 20 years. The problem is, they make it impossible for anyone to verify that.

Whenever I've had a debate with a fellow Minnesotan who believes that, I always close with this argument.

If the State is correct in stating that they turn out to be a huge windfall after 20 years, explain this.

Why have I never heard of any of the states who absorb a disproportionately low number of Somali, complain that they're missing out ?

Minnesota has over 5 million people. 1,267 isn’t even enough to fill a good-sized concert hall. Get a grip.

Why should anybody hate people based on their national origin? There are really great people and really crappy people and mostly just a lot of average people from every gender, skin color, religion, and national origin.

MAGA claimed they cared about illegal immigration, and wanting people to “do it the right way.” But then they throw all the people who did it the right way under the bus too.

It’s not about legality. MAGA is just a xenophobic movement, period.

And I am well educated on why people are racist. They can’t figure out the actual source of their problems so they buy the story from the oligarchs, who love to turn us against each other based on something like religion or skin color. That has been true for centuries, and every generation produces enough idiots to keep the grift going so the wealthy can continue to exploit the masses.

If every single person of Somalian descent left Minnesota, your problems wouldn’t go away. So which religious or racial group would you target next? Can’t even see that the oligarchs taught you to be racist so they could steal from you.

Yes we are. We see a cohort of people that came from a broken, ineffectual nation that learned stealing was the best way to survive. They came here and some of them never unlearned that lesson. But most of them do not steal. They are here to work and raise their families free from the violence and crime that are literally a way of life in their home nations. 

We can be glad that the fraudsters were caught, can acknowledge that this scandal will probably end Tim Walz's political career and makes the MN DFL look like the foolish cowards that they are, while still being sympathetic to the fact that the vast majority of the Somalians, Ugandans, Sudanese, and Kenyans in MN are decent people that want the same things as those of us that were born here.
