Trump says the Smithsonian focuses too much on 'how bad slavery was

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has ordered his attorneys to conduct a review of Smithsonian museums, calling their portrayal of U.S. history too negative and focused too much on “how bad Slavery was.”

Trump said he would subject the museums to “the exact same process” his administration has conducted of universities, with the goal of making the Smithsonian less “woke.”

A White House official told NBC News on Tuesday night that Trump plans to extend his review of museums beyond the Washington-based institution, saying the president will hold the Smithsonian "accountable" and "then go from there."

Trump wrote on Truth Social: “The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future.”

“We are not going to allow this to happen, and I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums, and start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities where tremendous progress has been made,” he added.

The Smithsonian did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Your reading comprehension is about as good as Hackboy.  Nowhere in those comments does Trump say slavery was good.  I am not familiar with the current content of the Smithsonian.  Other than the Air and Space museum, I haven't been to any of them in decades so I can't speak to how accurate his statements are.  But wanting them to focus on positives and not just negatives about our country seems like a laudable goal to me.  We shouldn't ignore slavery but it shouldn't be a disproportionate focus either.

Biden was literally the President who wanted to start a ministry of misinformation department, not Trump.

OK I am not ever in the habit of defending Donald Trump but this is being misrepresented. He did not suggest slavery was good. He is saying that the museum focuses too much on bad aspects of American history, like slavery, and should concentrate more on the positive aspects.

It’s a lazy, really stupid thing to say. And it ignores the fact that the existence of slavery resulted in some of the greatest people and moments in our history, like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation, etc.

But suggesting that Trump somehow thinks slavery was good is also lazy.

He's in a cult.  Thinking and reading are afterthoughts.  Dogma and zealotry in the liberal religion is the only truth, even though it's composed of all lies, misinformation, half-truths, revisionist history and gaslighting.

Sorry but he is suggesting that there were some positive or good aspects about slavery (or why else say the focus is "too negative"?)

I get that many conservatives are bothered by leftists who want to focus primarily on the bad parts of our history without giving enough emphasis to American greatness. But the problem is their solutions often be to simply block out the bad parts and pretend they don’t exist- that’s basically what Prager U does.

A thoughtful museum or history book explores the good and the bad. Recently I visited the World War II Museum in New Orleans. It showed the greatness of American victories at Iwo Jima and Normandy, how we liberated the world from the yoke of tyranny. We really did that and it might have been our greatest moment. It also showed the internment of Japanese Americans and the deadly results of the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We really did that too. I came away very proud of my country but also aware of our faults. That’s what I want our history to teach us.

Because he thinks, wrongly, that too much time is spent talking about the bad parts of our history. He’s a moron.

I’ve never been. On my bucket list.

But any history of America should have a HUGE section on slavery, both the evil of its existence and the greatness of the fight against it. I don’t need to go there to know this. I don’t need to go there to know how stupid Trump’s comments are.

OK getting back to the question I raised in the OP...What are the good parts of slavery that The Smithsonian should talk about instead? Are there any?

Yes yours. You KNOW what Trump said was stupid. But you refuse to acknowledge it because of your asinine “conservatives have to be right” game you always play. So first you attack @squistion for having the wrong focus, and then you try to lamely attack me for not having visited the museum. No credibility. The only ones who might defend you are playing the same dumb game you are.

Fixing actual problems takes leadership. Trump isn’t a leader, so he tosses shiit like this out to rile CNN / FOX News crowd.

Sure. I already mentioned them: the abolitionist movement. The Underground Railroad. The Emancipation Proclamation and Juneteenth and the 13th Amendment.

But I have a feeling the Smithsonian already DOES talk about these things.

Personally I'd like the focus to be on the 750,000 men who died during the war. Those men's deaths brought an end to one of the evils of the world. The US being one of the first countries to do so.

For once I agree with you 100%. But again I seriously doubt that the Smithsonian downplays the Civil War. I have friends who have visited who tell me this is not the case.

Maybe that the United States was the second country to ban it?

And this is the comment of yours that I took issue with.  You can't say Trump was wrong when you haven't even visited the place.  You have no idea how much emphasis they put on things like slavery at the expense of the things Cdub mentioned.  But that's your M.O..  Form an opinion without being informed on the topic.

Except those things were not about the institution of slavery they were a response to it.

I begin with the premise that there can’t be enough emphasis on slavery. So a comment like “there is too much emphasis on slavery” has to be stupid, in my book.
Now if there’s not enough emphasis on other things besides slavery that’s a different issue. If someone has a specific criticism to make in that regard I will listen. But Trump’s generalized comment about slavery was asinine and you know it.

Talk about putting lipstick on a pig. Those things in do not make slavery a positive experience or a good thing in any way.
