US Federal Government Shutdown Thread

Nice. Jealous.

I’m flying out of Newark which is never ideal late in the day but this is 100% these cocksmokes and their govt shutdown caused. The various ground stops and other cancelations piling up.

Good luck to you. Newark airport terminal I fly out of is one of the 7 rings of hell. At least they let us know early so I’m chilling in my room still.

To clarify, I'm a (student) pilot and am flying out of a GA airport, albeit one of the busiest GA airports in the country.  But not a commercial airport.  Still towered and tangentially affected by the ATC shortage but thus far I haven't had any ATC related delays in my flights.  So not really the same circumstances you're dealing with.  I was just busting balls a little bit.  Good luck on your flight.

Lol no worries…and that’s pretty cool.

We all knew this crap was coming so I’m just accepting it as there’s nothing I can do along with some other co-workers traveling home on same flight. When it’s 3 am east coast time when I land at home I’ll prolly not be so golly gee whiz about this 😂😂

I wanted to party with friends last night I never get to see so I took this late flight which is always dicey in good situations, just not this bad.

Schumer offered a one year extension for ACA credits. Got turned down. Good luck explaining that to voters while Don is blowing a hundred grand in security golfing today.

You deal with that then. Maybe Don will have his plan by then. He’s been crafting it for a decade.

It is hard to imagine any worse optics for Trump, Mike Johnson and Republicans than what we have seen in the last week.

Start with the multi-million dollar Great Gatsby themed party held at Mar-a-Lago, the same evening that Trump cuts off SNAP benefits.

The Great Gatsby? Really? Who came up with that idea? Had any of them actually read the book and understood that was a critique of the moral emptiness and carelessness of the wealthy during The Roaring Twenties

And that was followed by Trump flying down to Florida again this weekend to play golf amid airline flights being cancelled in around the country because he is trying to force Democrats to capitulate and give him everything he wants.

The actions of Trump and Republicans seem really callous and tone deaf to the hardships they are causing Americans. Do they really think their antics will be popular with most Americans? I just can't see it, and maybe I'll be wrong, but this looks likely to blow up in their faces with negative short term and long term consequences (2026 elections).

Still in the concepts of a plan stage.

So apparently today he said the government should send a check to everyone in the US for health care and people buy their own.

Might as well give to everyone. Why do I have to pay full boat and others get subsidized . I want mines too. And while we are at it let’s get this Andrew Yang checks out there.

This would be part of Trump’s plan that he has been  formulating.

Fock this

“Ocasio-Cortez declared the Government will REMAIN CLOSED until *EVERY SINGLE* illegal alien has access to free healthcare.

“I didn’t vote for this, and neither did the 80 million Americans who elected President Trump,” GOP Rep. Ronny Jackson said.”

We're another year into extending the emergency Covid ACA subsidies, which will make it virtually impossible to undo them.  The Dems know this of course -- entitlements are like toothpaste, very difficult to put back into the tube once they are out there.  :(

I keep hearing about this government shutdown thing, but I haven't seen any evidence of it in my life.

I have.  it's definitely affecting ATC and there is reduced staffing and a moral problem with those who ARE working but not getting paid.  The impact is minimal in general and these things do highlight how bloated and unnecessary much of our government is though.

Ha!

I read your comments and responded to them.  YOU skipped right past them because you were triggered by ARGENTINA.  Anytime you want to have a serious discussion let me know, snowflake.

That’s not really a Democrat thing though.  Didn’t the OBBB extend tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act?  Seems pretty similar.

Well, one of us is triggered by Argentina, because his MSM spun him up enough to post about it.

Guy who thinks a false dichotomy is a serious discussion. Where is your list of Leftie boondoggle to cut to fund this extension?

Not even close to the same thing for multiple reasons.  One of the main ones is that one of them is giving people their own money back while the other is giving people other people's money.

I'm not sure your point.  Politicians make things temporary all the time as a means to end around the financial analyses to make it seem like stuff is paid for, or to get votes from the other side.  And yes, the more they are extended, the more difficult it is to do away with them.  Although in this case, the tax cuts should help a lot of people pay for ACA, no?

Those are different than actual temporary relief for a once in a century pandemic that shut down the country.

Regardless, I've shown a willingness to extend the benefits.  But Gutter says I'm not serious because I'd rather give money to Argentina than health care to America.  :dunno:

It’s extending something that was initially meant to be temporary.   I thought it was a good idea to extend those as well, although I do think it’s disingenuous if people considered it a “new tax cut” at the time of the OBBB.

As mentioned above, extending something that already exists to me shouldn’t be considered a “tax cut.”  It wasn’t going to put any additional money into people’s pockets than they were already getting.

The false dichotomy is his go-to, but I don't think he actually comprehends he's doing it.  I ran an experiment on him once where I did it to him ratcheting up the extremes of the dichotomy and he thought I was serious the entire time. Makes me think he doesn't even realize what he's doing.

But if he's just playing dumb, I have to give him credit.  He's got me convinced.

Wut?  It gives them more money than if the extension wasn't included in the OBBB.

It's not a false dichotomy for several reasons.  First it's an example of how trump was able to find $20B to support a friend in another country during the govt shutdown.  We've heard multiple times how we can't fund SNAP or pay ATCs with the shutdown.  So it's, off.  Secondly it's an. Example of the govt spending money on foreign countries instead of Americans, coming from what is supposed to be an America first agenda.  You would think helping Americans healthcare could get funded along with propping up Argentina currency, but is not.  If it's a false dichotomy then fund both.

I'm not gonna entertain your leftie boondoggle strawman.  Healthcare is not a leftist boondoggle.  Lots of hardworking trump voters would benefit from this.

The choice he gives is you either give money to Argentina or allow poor americans to eat.  Then claims it's not a false dichotomy.  😂

I would like one of the many Trump supporters in this forum to offer a serious defense of what the administration is doing, right now, in real time, to hold back on sending SNAP payments. Not only are the optics terrible (perhaps the worst ever optics for a President in my lifetime) it seems morally wrong to withhold funds for this program so long as the money remains available. But go ahead please defend this if you can.
