President Threatens to Invoke Insurrection Act After Minneapolis Protests

President Trump threatened in a social media post Thursday morning to invoke the Insurrection Act to quell the protests in Minneapolis that have grown after an immigration agent killed a woman in the city. Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to invoke the law, said he would do so “if the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrections from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E.,” referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The act authorizes the president to use the military to suppress an insurrection if a state government requests it.

Hours before President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to quell protests in Minneapolis, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche posted on social media about the opposition to immigration raids in the state, referring to it as a “Minnesota insurrection” that was “a direct result of a FAILED governor and a TERRIBLE mayor encouraging violence against law enforcement.” The Minneapolis mayor, Jacob Frey, has been begging for ICE to leave the city, saying it’s been overrun by agents who outnumber local police forces.

I have heard a few folks suggest that Trump's goal has always been to invoke the Insurrection Act.  If so those opposed to Trump, those wanting to frustrate his purposes should conduct themselves absolutely peacefully so he has no excuse to do so.  Those who think that is his goal are playing into his hands, they are being played by him.  I wonder how it feels to be played by Trump.

Were sanctuary cities and states not handing over the criminals for deportation? Did his predecessor let in 10 million migrants and illegals in the four years prior? It’s not the same or even close. Stop pretending like it is.

1/ About 1,500 active-duty soldiers, two infantry battalions of the Army's 11th Airborne Division, are under prepare-to-deploy orders for possible action in Minnesota. This means Donald Trump is actively contemplating invoking the Insurrection Act. Absent that, deployment of active duty members of the military is prohibited by the Posse Comitatus Act.

2/ It bears repeating that the American military isn’t meant to be used for domestic law enforcement against American citizens, barring extraordinary circumstances that simply aren’t present here.

3/ Trump could become the first President to direct the use of U.S. military forces against American citizens during peacetime. And he’s doing it in a situation where the “unrest” is mostly peaceful protests resulting from Trump’s efforts to inflame the city. The situation is hardly the kind of insurrection, domestic violence, or conspiracy the Act contemplates, 

4/ The 11th Airborne’s mission: “decisively defeats any adversary in extreme cold weather..through large scale combat operations.” They are ready to “deploy, fight & win decisively against any adversary.” Learn more about what Trump is doing here:
