An instructor at the University of Oklahoma has been placed on leave after a student complained that she received a failing grade on a paper that cited the Bible to assert that the “belief in multiple genders” was “demonic.”

Samantha Fulnecky, 20, filed a complaint with the administration, the latest flashpoint in the ongoing debate over academic freedom on college campuses amid President Donald Trump’s push to end diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, and restrict how campuses discuss issues of race, gender and sexuality.

“OU remains firmly committed to fairness, respect and protecting every student’s right to express sincerely held religious beliefs,” the university wrote in an email on Wednesday.

The school added that the failing grade — which was supposed to account for 3% of Fulnecky’s final grade — would not affect the junior’s academic standing. An investigation into Fulnecky’s discrimination complaint is still ongoing.

The assignment was for a psychology class about lifespan development. Students were asked to write a 650-word response to an academic study that examined whether conformity with gender norms was associated with popularity or bullying among middle school students.

I received a failing grade once when I was asked to write an essay on racism. I turned in a blank piece of paper because I wanted to keep the page white.

It's good that you can see both sides, I guess. I tend to think that using the Bible as a reference source in a college Psychology class is absurd, but then again I don't really care.

There aren’t multiple genders? Prof must have failed her cause she’s retarded.

That is how I tend to lean.  Not sure it is demonic. it is retarded. isn't that what they are taught in public school before college?

I wrote a paper saying green peace is a fad arguing market forces make the movement unnecessary.  Hippy teacher gave me an F.

It didn't occur to me to complain.  From that point forward I just told them what they want to hear and got As

This sounds like a waste of valuable learning time.  Higher Ed is full of this nonsense.

The Bible has more truth in it than you are capable of understanding, and this is coming from someone who thinks there are a lot of inaccuracies in the Bible.

okay i didn't read the article but just based on that quote, it has to be written incorrectly and the student was using the bible to assert that the belief that a person can be multiple genders was demonic... right?   I mean that's the only thing that makes sense. Religious nuts obviously believe in men and women.

Charlie Kirk's life's work and beliefs and organization brought this to light.

Fulnecky's complaint to the administration went viral after the school's chapter of Turning Point USA, a conservative group founded by Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated in September, posted about Fulnecky's experience on the social media site X.

"Professors like this are the very reason conservatives can't voice their beliefs in the classroom," the group posted.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt appeared to affirm that perspective, posting on X that the situation was "deeply concerning."

"I'm calling on the OU regents to review the results of the investigation & ensure other students aren't unfairly penalized for their beliefs," he wrote.

Is the Bible a textbook? Has it been peer-reviewed and thoroughly vetted for inaccuracies? No, in fact it was written about people that lived years, decades or even centuries prior. I accept that there are many important truths in the Bible, valid lessons on morality and how to treat your fellow man.

But it in this case to use it as a reference is a cowardly cop-out by the student. College is supposed to be about expanding one's understanding. If you just fall back on religion and refuse to engage with subject matter that challenges your beliefs, not only do you not belong in college, you're probably close-minded. FFS, even seminary teaches subject matter that challenges student's beliefs.

It does stretch the imagination that a passing answer to this assignment would an assertion that "belief in multiple genders" is "demonic". I'd have to read the rest of her essay to determine if she deserved higher than a 0, but base on what's provided, all I can say is that is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Also, if you read the rest of the article---she deserved a 0.  Fock off university for suspending this professor.

Quote

The essays were graded out of 25 points, broken down by whether the student demonstrated an understanding of the article and addressed a specific aspect of the argument put forth. Fulnecky received zero points for her work.

“Please note that I am not deducting points because you have certain beliefs,” the instructor wrote in feedback obtained by The Oklahoman. Instead, the instructor said the paper did “not answer the questions for the assignment.”

The paper “contradicts itself, heavily uses personal ideology over empirical evidence in a scientific class, and is at times offensive” the criticism went on.

Just tell them what they want to hear is bottom line. Don’t think.

It is a poorly written essay that doesn't address the question and relies on opinions and feelings over research.

It shouldn't have received a 0 however. A 0 should really be reserved for someone not doing the work at all. Also, the explanation for why the professor felt it was a zero is clear. This student is being a pissy pants baby but they've learned from MAGA beliefs that is how you get what you want. Whine and cry

I just read the essay.  What a piece of crap that was.

Unless the assignment was, "give me your opinion on gender norms," she definitely deserves to fail.  She did acknowledge that there was an article though, so I'd give her like a 3 out of 25.

Are you aware of how closed minded colleges are? How many professors have been afraid to broach topics because they would never be allowed to reach tenure. College is not top of mind when I think open minded.

Well it's been a looooong while since I was spending any time around campus, so no. But I read the stories, and yes I have a distinct problem with scenarios like what you mention.

But that's irrelevant to this conversation.

This college is so open minded they suspended a professor for giving his student a much deserved F, just because she believes in the Sky Fairy.

No. But even if I did, I wouldn’t think belief in god entities a student to a passing grade when she didn’t do the homework assignment.

The 0 might’ve been extreme. I’d have given her a 1 for signing her name.

It’s going to pretty funny when the Muslims really start Musliming in spaces taken over and now occupied by liberals. Yelling about Palestine is one thing, the liberals are cool with that. But the other aspects? It’s going to be hilarious.
