Brandon Oliver

Yes, yes....the Denver front 7 is pretty nasty. However, as an owner, I finally got a chance to see him play last night, and I didn't observe all of the accolades that I have been reading about.

He doesn't have the speed to the outside, and he seemed to go down quite easily on minimal contact....even looking to get down a couple of times, perhaps.

Two pretty poor showings the last couple of weeks. I think it is safe to assume that Ryan Matthews has not lost his job. Thoughts?

I think Denver gameplanned to take the run away. I wouldn't overreact. Oliver will remain a factor through EOY.

Good call. San Diego had success vs Denver last year playing keep away with the running game. The Broncos want their offense on the field; they believe once they're ahead you have to react to them and abandon your plan.

I agree Matthew will still have his job . But I disagree about Oliver from what I have seen . Last night played against a very good def . Manning is a great QB but in the super bowl the Seahawks def made him look avg .

Seriously, anyone who watched the game saw this. I was talking to a buddy who was complaining about him not attacking the hole - what hole? Denver was all over him every time he touched the ball. The biggest problem was that they consistently lined him up on the right side to stop the pass rush and almost every time before flanking to the right for a screen he would have to put on a block first. Virtually no opportunities where he was running a screen through the slot with a complete mismatch. The two times I saw him wide open in the slot where he could have had big gains, Rivers decided to run once and the other time he decided to be cocky old Rivers and throw into double coverage. Rivers has had a great year, but some of his really awful habits came back last night as he was pressing playing from behind.

Oliver still got me 13.3 points in ppr despite the other team gameplanning against him. Not sure what happens when Mathews comes back, but I will still ride Oliver as long as Mathews doesn't play.

been saying this for weeks...Mathews will be the guy after the bye. oliver had a nice showing before teams had a chance to figure him out. when it looked like he had an angle the defender caught him. when he had to make one guy miss he couldn't. the run blocking isn't good, we know that, but oliver now looks like d.brown out there when the hype had been so much more. won't get easier next week @Miami before the bye. after that he's prob in the wrong side of a 70/30 split at best IMO.

Thursday night team on the road vs a very good division opponent. Don't make too many talent evaluations off that, especially when looking at a guy who has been so productive to date.

Matthews will certainly be in the mix if/when healthy. Now, if we only had $1 for every time we've heard that...

um, he had like maybe 1 or 2 plays where he even had an opportunity, to make someone miss and he made Marshall look silly both times.

every other time he got the ball he had less than 1 second to react before getting hit by 1-3 guys

I think most of the Thursday games have been division games thus far. I don't know what any of that translates to on the field.

Oliver was getting smashed 2-3 yards behind the Line of Scrimmage every time. A few times, he was thrown a naked screen and got crushed. He will still be relevant going forward, even when Matthews comes back. I still have my expectations tempered though. He is still a flex guy at best.

When he had room to operate, he was able to turn upfield pretty quickly and get some good chunks of yardage. Problem was he didn't have much room most of the night.

He's a good player. He'll be involved plenty when Matthews returns....and I'd be surprised if he didn't factor in to what SD does at the position next year. More of a complimentary back than the lead dog though.

I'm not saying Oliver is bad, but on one of his first carries against the Raiders he got flat out body slammed by a linebacker. I know no one wants to hear it, but if you're getting body slammed by linebackers, you're not going to take Ryan Mathews' job. You're a change of pace guy.

I think Mathews will be the feature back when he comes back. He's a better fit in the offense. However, I'm not sure if this is really how I think or I've made myself believe this for hanging onto him for so long?

Well I'm dumping him for Gordon next week if possible. Loading up on the root beer committee backs is keeping me afloat.

He is better than Mathews. What would Mathews done last night with every carry vs that Broncos D focusing solely on the run? Oliver got me 8.5 pts thank god. Kid has good hands and is definitely gonna have the carries for at least a couple weeks. Then an expanded woodhead rule if not a 70% share. Mathews is in a contract year and hasn't even started running.

Not even in an 8-team league should Josh Gordon be available at this point in the season.

I am thinking Mathews gets his job back and lil chub goes to 3rd down change of pace. His shtick appears to be up.

Oliver's game yesterday is a great example of why standard leagues are better than PPR. The guy did jack squat the whole game and didn't in the slightest deserve a decent point total.

PPR leagues are good, the scoring just has to be adjusted. Who should get more points. A guy who caught two passes for 84 yards or a guy who caught 6 passes for 75 yards. Of the six catches what if four of them were for first downs. He was more important in that game and a bigger part of the offense. Without PPR, then Antonio Brown isn't much better than Justin Hunter.

I agree though, 7 catches for 27 yards is a joke for PPR. That is more points than if a guy had 4 catches for 50 yards. Somehow you just have to adjust to make things fair. I think the goal is to give fantasy players the same value they have on the field, number wise.

What game are you watching man?

As many have mentioned, Denver planned to take him out of the game, and did a fantastic job of executing that plan. It's that simple.

Any NFL RB would be hard pressed to make anything positive behind THAT line in THAT game.

Oliver is light years ahead of D. Brown.

one league we took out PPR

but we added 1st downs, its pretty solid and puts a little more value in production, might be changing my other league to that.

Could easily ask the same of you. Many here and in the media were crowning him the next big thing calling him baby sproles and what not. But as someone who watched sproles in highschool in my hometown and at kstate that's flat out insulting because sproles does what an undrafted player like oliver can't do which is produce even when everyone in the stadium knows you are getting the ball. Good rbs like sproles juke spin stiffarm jump over or run through would be tacklers when nothing is there. Oliver does none of those things. Yeah he's better than d.brown because he can catch and accelerate through a big hole but he's pedestrian otherwise. Don't be fooled by his game against a bad Oakland team or a jets team that paid him no mind in thier prep. He is what we've seen against Kc and denver which is a decent 3rd down back and nothing more.

This is a format I hope gets more common. It gives value to the receivers who move the chains as well as the short yardage runs for a first down. Very important in football, should matter in fantasy football. Good stuff.
