NFL.com leagues: Never Again

Recommended Posts

I prefer Yahoo's interface best, but I like to do league on other sites as well, like ESPN and NFL.com. Never again for NFL.com.

I've had issues before were owners drop their entire team because they lost a game or two (or three). Happened again today. Dropped his whole team and then posted to that fact and said for Lynch and Calvin, who he couldn't drop, first come first serve. Someone (who in my mind is just as bad as them) offered Dwayne Allen and he accepted.

My experience has also been on NFL.com that commishes are so ineffective, inept, or absent that they don't step in and do anything. They should cancel this trade, put all the players back on this team, and then lock it. I doubt they will.

I then I will be forced to do the same as the league will be compromised beyond repair.

Why do asshats do this? It's a FREE league for cripes sake! If you suck, just walk away. Don't be a tool and drop your whole team.

Only on NFL.com. Never will go back. Not for this nonsense and not for their ridiculous projections. Waste of time.

Are you bitching about a free league? Wtf?

Law bitches about a lot of things, but I'm actually with him on this one. A league is a league, I put time into drafting and waivers. One idiot makes all of that a waste of time, that pisses me off, money or not. And it's too late in week four to add another to take its place.

Yes. I prefer free leagues. I have money. I don't feel the need to do sausage test to prove my worth. I just enjoy playing the game and competing, with or without money. If it's free or not, should a toolbag drop their whole team like that?

But please do go ahead and tell me all about the numerous $10k leagues you're in. Those stories never get old.

No, in fact a league is not a league. If you pay to play, you have a league. If you have nothing at stake, you have a colossal waste of time on your hands and deserve to suffer shenanigans in the pits of the seventh level of hell with the rest of the members of the free thing you're engaging in that's not a league.

Ok that sucks then, I've done 1 random free league and that has happened. Im doing my first organized free league and I hope it doesn't go like that. Even tho I would be the one to drop everyone in that league!!! Dez,Hill,Miller,Cooks great 4 first picks in that league.

Yeah, see...I disagree. I don't need the validation of money. I play for the fun of it. I enjoy the time kill and the thrill of competition. Money actually means very little.

But you're not having fun. Hence the thread you made here about never agains and such. If it was fun you'd be posting about how great free leagues are and their lack of anything non fun.

What I've learned today from you about free leagues is that they are, in fact, not fun and worthy of complaint to anonymous internet dwellers. I agree with you.

Theres a difference between a free league and a public league. Im in a few free leagues where i know all or at least most of the participants. There may not be money involved, but there are still stakes. Ball busting buys things money never will. I wouldnt join a public league to save my life.

I don't get how this is the site's fault. The same league could have been hosted elsewhere and the player would have done the same thing. The issue here is him being a candy ass baby. The platform is irrelevant.

You are pretty naive there. Hey thats respectable that you dont need money on the line. The issue is most people do. If there is nothing on the line then what incentive is there to play through to the end? Yes it is dickish on the part of the people who are screwing around, but like someone else said You get what you pay for.

I still cant help but laugh that you are getting so emotional over a free league...

I have used yahoo and espn for years before the season starts to get some idea where people are. I have never seen anyone who stuck around the entire draft. Funny thing is I never knew till this year because you make about the third person here that admits to playing there, that people do play the season. Its good to know how some people can be wrong on just about every post before the season and always gets the latest and hottest pick-ups every week on a site where a few people actually play. Lets just call it what it is, an alternative for solitary.

12G1C is a free league, and we have only had one owner bail in the middle of a season, and it was the first year. Volty's Cult Classic Dynasty is a free league that as long as ive been a member hasnt had one owner bail in the middle of a season. There is some turnover between seasons, but that happens in most leagues paid or free.

Like i said above, money isnt the only incentive to play FF. Sometimes just being able to brag about the beat down you put on a friend or coworker is good enough. Not that i would have any idea what that feels like this season. But i have vague memories of winning FF matchups.....somewhere in the past.....

Also there is a perfectly good reason to hate NFL.com fantasy site: The incessant auotplay ads. I wont play on that platform again simply for that. Yahoo isnt perfect, but at least i dont get some ad for hemorrhoid cream blaring in my ear everytime i navigate to a new page.

Most who play money leagues dont do so because they want to win a pile of cash...

but that being said, there are certain motovations that are lacking in free leagues and redraft leagues that exist in pay leagues and keeper leagues.

in a free league, people dont give a rat's u know what because they are not invested in it in any way. these people likely draft 10 or 15 teams and drop the teams that lose coming out of the gate and gradually drop their others until they have only playoff teams. These same people likely make wonky trades that others dont like and the league just does not work.

In a pay league, at least if you have paid, you are somewhat invested and not as likely to walk away. the fact you have to pay also means you cant sign up for 10 leagues and play the best 3-5 of them because that costs money to do.

another step in the right direction is a keeper league.

sometimes even in pay leagues, people who get eliminated from the playoffs do dumb things to try to get their investment back.

ie. Ill trade you lynch for Devonta freeman and you send me 10 bucks via pay pal.

In a keeper league this wouldnt be an issue because you can keep Lynch for next year, so you wouldnt make a dumb trade like this.

Most Keeper leagues allow you to keep anywhere from 1 to 5 but some are what we call Dynasty leagues where you keep pretty much everyone.

I find that if you are allowed to keep 3, that's usually enough to keep most of the wonky trades out. Even if a couple make it through they arent likely to upset the balance of the league because they wont be top players.

I dont know what else to say. I think this is your best option if you want a league free of stupidity.

Truth. The thread title is false advertising.

OP needs to find some friends, find a league started by others like at FFToday (not a totally random league at a free site) or find a minimal pay league for like $25 where the odds of this happening dwindle.

I am in multiple free leagues that are free of stupidity. Four to be exact.

I frequent this site, plus 3 or 4 other FF based message boards and they are rife with posts about collusion and how to deal with absentee owners, and the vast majority of them are pay leagues. So lets not act like the fact that everyone throws $20 or $50 into a hat keeps the douchebags out. Because it absolutely 100% doesnt.

There are plenty of free leagues out there that are perfectly fine. There are plenty of paid leagues out there that are terrible. Everyone needs to stop painting with broad strokes.

Its no better than the "10 team leagues are for babies" threads. Find leagues you are happy being a part of and play in them, and stop wasting everyones time by bagging on the ones we are happy being a part of.

I'm not saying there arent good free leagues out there.

lots of people play for the sake of competition and to do well. Others need incentive to do the right thing.

All I'm saying is that keeper leagues and pay leagues tend to have less stupid moves.

ie. your chances of having a solid league with good GM's is a little higher on pay leagues and keeper leagues.

There are plenty of free leagues out there that are also good. To some extent your odds of finding one are largely dependant on who that free league markets itself out to. (ie. older or younger)

I about my free leagues all the time. In fact every post ive ever written about any team ive ever owned on this forum was about a free league.

So am i not allowed to post about my teams anymore? Im not the most prolific poster out here in the mange forearm, but i think i hold my own when i do post.

This thread could have been a fun thread where we all post our horror stories about terrible owners or terrible leagues. Instead we got people calling out a pretty good contributor because he plays in free leagues. Thats childish and idiotic. This thread takes up no physical space. If you dont like the thread, ignore it. If youre just trying to troll, take it to the Geek Club. if your just looking for an argument, take it back to 4th grade.

I would argue that in a lot of cases not having money involved would tend to keep away the douche owners, as most douche owners arent going to play for $0.

So its a wash.

Some pay leagues are good. Some are bad.

Some free leagues are good. Some are bad.

Find leagues you enjoy, and play in them. It really is just that simple. Any other answer here is either intentional douchebaggery, intentional obtuseness, or intentional trollingishness.

Not sure if it's been said (probably not going to read all this), but some people will join free public leagues just to practice drafting. Hell, I joined one on accident trying to get into a mock draft. Needless to say, I pay little attention to that league.

But you'd still rightly be called a d!ck if you cut your whole team in that league, right? Because maybe other people are paying attention.

That there are other options to take to minimize the number of d!cks you play against doesn't make them not d!cks, and doesn't make it stupid to complain about their d!ckishness.

Could be the culture of the website. Some websites attract certain kinds of people more than others.

Probably not, no one else aside from 2 or 3 people seem to be paying attention and the ones that are have already cut Cooks and Anderson for example. There's actually quite a few good players still on the ww that are not available in any of my pay leagues of the same format. Dropping your entire team is a d1k move, but your just as much of a d1k to complain about it in a free public league. If you care about the league that much, then you should care enough to throw a couple of dollars down to play. JMO.

You get what you pay for.

Thanks for clearing things up for the 12 of us who have unknowingly spent the past decade engaged in a colossal waste of time. I hate to think how many more years we would have frittered away in a league that, by your definition, isn't a league. Thanks for opening our eyes and showing us the error of our ways.

Absentee owners are just as bad as anyone that drops a mass exodus of players. Sorry but its 100% true and is not getting enough mention.

When half the league in a free random league isn't playing, and not adjusting to waiver wire pickups, injuries, byes, etc...the competitiveness of the league suffers regardless.

The free leagues that have been used as the basis for why free leagues aren't bad is apples and oranges to what the OP is talking about. They serve nothing to the discussion of this temper tantrum.

If you join a free league on ANY host site, that is randomly assembled, you better realize that at least one of the owners is mock drafting. Another one will likely stop paying attention. Another will likely fish for trades to make them a juggernaut.

Simply put, you are not going to get the seriousness from ALL owners in leagues where no one has familiarity with one another AND nothing at stake.

Having said that...and having said way too much towards this stupid thread...

I gotta agree.

it's one thing to draft a team and then not maintain it.

its an entirely different level of being a jerk if you drop all your players so someone else can have the pick of the litter.

Anyhow, the only time I've ever seen this has been in a free league I played in years ago and in a work league I regretted having ever joined.
