10 month old baby gets gun permit

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- "Bubba" Ludwig can't walk, talk or open the refrigerator door -- but he does have his very own Illinois gun permit.

The 10-month-old, whose given name is Howard David Ludwig, was issued a firearm owner's identification card after his father, Howard Ludwig, paid the $5 fee and filled out the application, not expecting to actually get one.

The card lists the baby's height (2 feet, 3 inches), weight (20 pounds) and has a scribble where the signature should be.

With some exceptions, the cards are required of any Illinois residents purchasing or possessing firearms or ammunition within the state. There are no age restrictions on the cards, an official said.

Illinois State Police oversee the application process. Their purpose, said Lt. Scott Compton, is to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, those under an order of protection and those convicted of domestic violence.

"Does a 10-month-old need a FOID card? No, but there are no restrictions under the act regarding age of applicants," he said.

Ludwig, 30, of Chicago, applied for the card after his own father bought Bubba a 12-gauge Beretta shotgun as a gift. The weapon will probably be kept at Ludwig's father's house until the boy is at least 14.

No age restrictions? This is focking stupid. - Hear of School shootings much?

You have to wait til 16 to buy cigarettes.

You ahve to wait until 16 to drive a car (b/c it can be a "deadly weapon")

You have to wait until 18 to vote.

You have to wait until 21 to drink.

...But any distraught 9 y.o. can buy a gun?

Does anybody else see the problem with this?

Hope they change that law. Maybe something like Hunting Rifles at 15. Handguns at 18. Something - ANYthing would be an improvement.

First off you have to be 18 to buy cigarettes, Secondly he did not buy the gun. It is a collectible gun his grandfather gave to him so his father figured that in Illinois you have to have a permit to have a gun in your name so he applied for one for his son. This is not the type of gun you go and shoot rabits or squirls with. So before all of you jump to conclutions get the facts.

God bless the NRA

God Bless America and our rights as americans to own firearms

First off, it depends on where you live as to the cigarette issue.

Second, I don't think anybody's too worried about the specific pre-toddler in this case. It's the fact that the article says "There are no age restrictions on the cards" that has most reasonable people scratching their melons. You restrict all the things I've listed PLUS when kids can work, PLUS (in some places) CD's and Videos...

....But somehow GUNS are an "all ages" kinda thing?

Nope. I think even most responsible NRA'ers would be a little shocked at that one. :dunno:

Pretty sure that the card is just one of the requirements to own a gun in the state. Being of legal age , (18 long guns, 21 for pistols) is a second one that must be met, probably a background check as well.

And I'm willing to bet you went hunting with your father and never shot up your school.

You have to wait until 21 to drink.

Wrong!

Also, it would be funny if the dad got busted for forging a signature.

I know in MI you have to be 14 and go through a gun saftey course, like 2 weeks long kinda like driver's training, to get a gun. Still pretty nuts you can get a gun at 14, but can't buy a beer till your 21...

If you want to play the system, you can. There are goldfish who got life ins policies and the ins co's had to pay. This actually does not bother me. What does is how easy it is for street thugs to get hand guns. I am a big advocate of British law that basically says the penalties for crimes when using guns are HUGE compared to penalties without. This type thinking seems to make more sense.

I don't care who owns a gun. I do care about what you do with it.
