Voltaire 5,316 Posted June 4, 2007 Her name is Rhiannon Frances born May 18th. These pictures are from the first her first three days or so, she opens her eyes wide now and has enough strength in her legs to rotate a bit. It took me this long to post because I'm technologically incompetent. Baby is really laid back and peaceful. Mom's doing fine enough as well I guess but had an episiotomy (they cut the vagina to make the opening bigger) so she has been far and away the crankier/grumpier of the two. http://public.fotki.com/jeffandshenjuan/baby-pics/

Voltaire 5,316 Posted June 4, 2007 She's gorgeous. Her name is interesting in a good way. 'Rhiannon' is such a sweeeet awesome Fleetwood Mac song. I always loved that name, always thought it was beautiful, but it never caught on. I've never met anyone who had it and seldom see it. Frances is my mother's name. There's a wiki entry on the name, if you're curious and can't access it, I can c&p it for you.

Voltaire 5,316 Posted June 4, 2007 Everybody here says she looks white, not asian at all. My observation skills are all out of whack myself because I uh don't see many white people anymore and so (ahem) I agreed with them. Certainly looks way more like me than her mom. Now you guys are saying she looks Asian. Really throws me for a loop. I mean when I married an Asian, I was expecting slanty eyed kids, but I don't think she's got slanty eyes. Actually I'm not sure. She kept her eyes closed the first few days when all the pics were taken but now they're wide open when she's not sleeping. I dunno. I'm happy, she's healthy and looks great to me. My wife, as expected, is a really great mother.
Artist Formerly Known as Big O 0 Posted June 4, 2007 Congrats! How scary was the Chinese hospital? Having a kid over there has been a major discussion point for me and the wifey, in case we relo. The local health system never gives me good feelings. and why do Asian people always give the peace sign in pictures?

Voltaire 5,316 Posted June 4, 2007 Congrats! How scary was the Chinese hospital? Having a kid over there has been a major discussion point for me and the wifey, in case we relo. The local health system never gives me good feelings. and why do Asian people always give the peace sign in pictures? The Chinese hospital looks and smells kinda bad but I was always surprised by the care and how decent it was. The hospital staff had modern equipment and they kept exceeding my expectations. So while I had serious reservations at first, they were performing well Then the day of birth came and it was a huge huge letdown. We induced labor because the kid was six days overdue. I couldn't sit with my wife at any point from when I escorted her there. Notice Redtodd's baby pics all have delivery room pics. He cut the cord, all sorts of stuff. Not me.. They took her in to induce labor and shut me out of the whole process. Never kept me updated. I talked to my wife by cellphone. Meanwhile she was in labor and had nobody attending her. They were too busy- why induce labor if you don't have the staff to cover? When I told this to my mother she says -since I was born on Christmas- the hospital was also short staffed, they had my dad in there helping. We wanted a 'natural birth' I found out in China most babys are delived by cesarian section, a 'natural birth' is actually an episiotomy which are going out of vogue in the west but are routine in back-assward countries like this. This is when they cut my wife (30 stitches) to expand the vaginal opening. Tons of blood. She was in so much pain for a week and still can't sit down for long periods. We were promised anesthesia, but she was in terrible pain, if they gave her any at all, it was way too small a dose. The hospital is overcrowded. Now that room we have in the pics is nice, just one bed and nicely furnished. Looks good, was good. But we were lucky, we only got that at the last minute because of some guanxi (bribe/connections) we had over there (the woman in pic 14 is the friend who pulled the strings for us). That whole week we were renting a bed in a converted office. The office was moved into the hallway. Desk, filling cabinets, phones whatver outside the door. There was room for two beds so that's what was in there. Some rooms have six or eight women in them. No furnishings, two beds two chairs, one table. No TV. Bathroom down the hall. Microwave in the hall, people cooking in it all the time. Big clusterfock. One nice thing is they have bedside attendants availible to take care of everything. The woman in pic 13 is a professional nanny. She has stayed with my wife the whole time and is still right now living in my house in the guest bedroom, will be with us for a week. Super extremely competent capable woman, baby care extraoridnarre ($200 for a month which is a very good wage in China but easily affordable to me). Health Insurance isn't a Chinese thing. Everything is paid for out of pocket. And that's kind of cool because for two weeks of hospital care, there it cost me $500 plus the nanny's wage.

Spider fantasy 0 Posted June 7, 2007 The baby is beautiful. And good luck to your wife on a speedy recovery. Since you live in China, this is your only child, right, you can't have any more? peenie 1,915 Posted June 7, 2007 episiotomies are done almost always here. that way the doctors get to charge you for surgery. rarely are they not done. the doctors claim it's easier to repair a cut than a tear. you baby looks asian to me, but then again she seems larger in size than an asian child and her face shape and complexion looks like yours. i can't tell which one is the mother. you should've titled each picture. you can go back and edit each one. when will your family get to see the baby? congratulations!
