As far as Rodgers goes, McCarthy is going to have to find out whether this trend of holding the ball too long and not trusting what he sees is something that will linger. Rodgers seems intent on hitting a big play instead of settling for less when he needs to, and the result was that he was responsible for a number the sacks Monday night.

 

"A number of them could have been avoided, clearly," McCarthy said

 

"You have to trust the read, trust the read, and that didn't happen all the time," McCarthy said. "There's a few plays I'm sure he'll wish he had back."

The problems Monday night were copious:

 

• The offensive line struggled without injured starting left tackle Chad Clifton, although only about half the sacks could be attributed directly to its play. Vikings end Jared Allen had 4½ sacks, but there was pressure up the middle and from the right side, as well.

 

• Quarterback Aaron Rodgers held the ball too long despite a game plan that called for him to release it on a lot of three- and five-step drops. Rodgers' indecision played a big role in the offense's failure to score points and led to inconsistency throughout the unit.

 

• Rodgers' receivers keep dropping balls. Tight end Donald Lee dropped what would have been a touchdown pass; wide receiver Donald Driver dropped a pass inside Minnesota territory; and running back DeShawn Wynn dropped a pass in the flat. According to STATS, the Packers rank tied for third in the NFL in dropped passes with 10.

 

• There were not enough great individual plays. On the drive in which the Packers went 81 yards only to fail on four tries from the Vikings 5-yard line, running back Ryan Grant had a chance to score on a screen pass and didn't; Grant was stopped a yard short of the goal line on a 4-yard run; fullback John Kuhn failed to get over the goal line from the 1; tight end Jermichael Finley couldn't break free from linebacker Ben Leber on a pass for no gain; and Lee dropped the touchdown pass.
