Panel Clears Way for Mosque Near Ground Zero

Recommended Posts

In this country you have the right to burn the flag. However, what if you rolled up on Memorial day to the Arlington National Cemetary parking lot and light the stars and stripes on fire? Wrong time and wrong place. You have the right to do so sure, but we have the right to kick your ass, call you a dumbass, and vote out any politician that backs your candy ass.

Same thing here.

Thank you for that thrilling segment of Bad Analogies with Apples and Oranges.

It's a closer analogy than that. More like Oranges and Tangerines. :music_guitarred:

I don't wanna read through 8 pages of stuff so it might have been mentioned.

There is already a mosque 4 blocks away. 2 blocks is unacceptable but 4 blocks is a-ok. Got it.

So you do not believe that there are muslims that want us to recognize Sharia Law??

What does that have to do with anything?

Do you not believe there are christians that we should recognize christianity as the nations religion and base laws off of the bible?

Do you not believe there are kwanza-ens (don't know the religious name) who believe the US should be run by blacks?

Do you not believe there are white people who think we should kick all non whites out?

You're argument is rah-tard.

Two questions:

1. If there is one already 4 blocks away, then why do they need another spot?

2. Did the one 4 blocks away go up before some Islamic terrorists killed thousands in the name of Allah?

1) It's not technically a Mosque. And it's not a Community Center of whatever this thing is called. Just a place for daily prayer.

Since 1970, Masjid Manhattan has been a peaceful, not-for-profit organization located in the area of downtown Manhattan. Our members are City, State and Federal employees, as well as professional employees of the Financial area who come to our Masjid to perform their daily prayers.

2) Why exactly would that matter?

Droppin' the maps again because new people are here and they don't feel like reading the thread and it's relevant to "Question 1":

I answered both, you dolt. Can you not read? Or do I have to type it out in Biblical Verse? "It's" refers to the existing structure that is "4 blocks away". So we have...

They're not the same type of building.

And right below that?

Since 1970...

Gee, I think that about covers it.

The point is the one Islamic related structure went up 4 blocks from where the World Trade Center was built well before the 9/11/2001 Islamic Attacks that brought down the buildings and wrecked our economy and killed thousands of Americans because we don't live in agreement with their way of life. Some of us have learned from this attack that we have enemies that are against us because of their Islamic heritage and their problem with us not living under their laws.

Perhaps you can enlighten me as to what Park51 has to do with the September 11th attacks? Aside from the memorial that's planned inside of it.

Or maybe, just maybe, people like you can finally admit that it has absolutely nothing to do with where it's being built, but that fact that it's being built at all.

The Muslim website seems to say the exact opposite of what you say.

The Community Center at Park51.

...The mosque, yet to be named, will be run by a separate non-profit whose Board of Directors will reflect a broad range of experience. While the mosque will be located in the planned final structure of Park51, it will be a distinct non-profit. http://www.park51.org/whynow.htm

It will be a huge place in the heart of New York City with all power to the Muslim religious/cultural leaders who own it and run it and it will be non-profit and will have complete freedom from access by the U.S. Government. Free to plan whatever they want.

You. Are. Impossible.

"It's" refers to the existing structure that is "4 blocks away".

This sentence is in the post that you quoted here. Why are you talking about Park51?

OH NOES. MUSLIMS IN AMERICA CAN DO WHAT THEY WANT JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE! AND THE GOVERNMENT CAN'T SPY ON THEM TO PROTECT US! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! SAY NO TO YMMA!

You're the same type of intolerant assh0le that I have to deal with here in Tennessee.

A plan to build an Islamic community center in the middle-Tennessee town of Murfreesboro sparked an eruption of ugly criticism on Thursday from some residents who don't want a mosque built in their backyard. More than 600 people turned out for a meeting of the Rutherford County Commission Thursday night, with some sharing their opposition in public comments that at times turned intolerant.

"We have a duty to investigate anyone under the banner of Islam," Allen Jackson, the pastor of World Outreach Church, said at the meeting.

The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro's plans call for a 52,000-sq. ft. facility that would include a pool, gym, and school in addition to a mosque. The center has had a facility in Murfreesboro since 1997, but says that with over 250 Islamic families in the community, it needs more space.

Same story. Same players. Different place.

You're ire has nothing to do with location and everything to do with Islamophobia. Stop hiding behind the "Ground Zero" label like a coward.

I think it's pretty obvious that you're afraid of Islam. Just a few posts ago you dropped this gem:

Muslim religious/cultural leaders who own it [can] run it and ... will have complete freedom from access by the U.S. Government. Free to plan whatever they want.

Or is there some other way to interpret that?

Just gonna leave this here. :ninja:

Muslim prayers welcome at Pentagon chapel

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/08/18/pentagon.chapel.islam/

Washington (CNN) -- Less than 100 feet from where a hijacked airplane slammed into the Pentagon, Muslim military personnel bring prayer rugs on weekday afternoons for group worship.

On Fridays, a local imam conducts a service in the Pentagon Memorial Chapel built after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks by al Qaeda that killed 184 people at the U.S. military headquarters. The chapel, with stained-glass windows, burgundy carpeting and a wooden alter, provides a place of prayer and religious observation for anyone regardless of faith or culture.

Its welcoming calm and nondenominational culture are in stark contrast to the emotional debate over plans to build an Islamic cultural center and mosque two blocks from ground zero in New York City, where planes flown by al Qaeda hijackers destroyed the World Trade Center, killing more than 2,700 people.

Keep in mind that Park51's "Mosque Floor" is described as "open to and accessible to all members, visitors and our New York community".

You're right. There are never christians near eachother. All christians are the same.

And does it matter if it went up before or after? Its still there.

Lastly, saint elistan is droppin some knowledge. I'm surprised he did this much research but he's said evrything that needs to be said. I don't know how any rational person can be against this community center.

BTW - I changed my mind on this one. After further research, I could live with it now for the following reason:

- It is not going up at Ground Zero. It is 2 blocks away from the edge of where things were, which is a big distance in NYC.

I still think that it might be a bit of a bad idea, it is not the worst thing that could be put up in NYC.

Say there, Mr Jones. Remember that guy that raped and killed your daughter about 9 years ago. You do? Well, all your neighbors forgot, so that's all that matters. Well, here's the thing. That fine, peace loving gentleman is done serving his time next week and needs a place to live. Seeing that you never filled the void of your daughter's room, I knew you wouldn't mind if we let your daughter's killer move right in. Well, we don't care if you mind, because very important people want this to happen, so don't trouble your head with independent thinking. Oh, and don't worry about your other 3 daughters. He promised that he won't rape them much. Have a nice day.

People love to play this "two blocks away" card. Did you know the building that's on the site now was damaged during the attack? It's not just close it was actually part of the attack on 9/11.

I still think that it might be a bit of a bad idea, it is not the worst thing that could be put up in NYC.

That's funny, when first reading this story I was initially for it. I thought it was a cool idea. Here was my post on page one:

On face value this seems out of line. However the more I think about it, the more it makes sense to allow them to build it. Freedom to excercise religion is one of the most fundamental things here in America. And we need a louder "moderate" muslim voice to offset the radicals. Any other country would not do this, which is sorta the point. We have those founding freedoms and even 9/11 won't sway us from them.

But after finding out that the majority of New Yorkers were against the idea I backed off my intitial reaction and thought it would be a better idea not to build the Islamic cultural center mosque type thingy for praying or whatever the fock you want to call it. The reason is that I was under the impression that the reason they wanted to build it that close to Ground Zero was to HELP with Muslim/Non-Mustlim American relations in this country and especially NYC. While also giving a loud voice for moderate muslims as opposed to radical muslims (which is needed desperately).

However if building it there will only make those relations worse, and it seems the leaders of the group building it are reluctant to totally discount radical muslims, then I don't see this as a good thing to do. And if the folks wanting to build it were really, truely for those things they wouldn't want to build it either at that location for the same reason. :dunno:

It was never about their "Right" to build it, of course they have the right to. It was about if they should.

I mostly agree with you, but

1. This is not that close to Ground Zero. Just because it was "damaged" during the event does not mean that it is really that close to the 16 acre area that is really where things happened. Within a 2 block radius, I would imagine that there is 1M people. :dunno:

2. Might be more of a pain in the butt than it is worth for the Muslims, but if they back down, then they feel even more alienated. I would not want to placate people, but I would want them feeling subservient either.

3. They definitely have a right to build something there. Whether it is a good idea or not is up for debate.

4. I don't buy the argument that most NY'ers are against it. That is mainly due to people not really understanding what is going on there. Once the propaganda is done, I think that cooler heads will prevail. I also subscribe to the theory that more than 50% of the people in this country are easily swayed and borderline idiots. Just look at our elected officials for further proof.

It was a well thought out and appropriate analogy to the situation. I do not have much of an opinion on the subject matter, but I can certainly understand a rational person being opposed to the building of the mosque. I'm bringing a rational perspective to the issue.

In fact, I thought it was an award worthy analogy. Somebody get Mr. Pulitzer on the phone.
