Osama and Reps reach tax deal

Recommended Posts

Monday, December 6, 2010; 6:40 PM

President Obama and congressional Republicans have agreed to a tentative deal that would extend for two years all the tax breaks set to expire on Dec. 31, continue unemployment benefits for an additional 13 months and cut payroll taxes for workers to encourage employers to start hiring.

The deal has been in the works for more than a week and represents a concession by Obama to political reality: Democrats don't have the votes in Congress to extend only the expiring tax breaks that benefit the middle class. The White House estimates that the proposed agreement would prevent typical families from facing annual tax increases of about $3,000, starting Jan. 1.

The deal also would revive the estate tax, but it would exempt inheritances of up to $5 million for individuals and $10 million for couples. Democrats on Capitol Hill are strongly opposed to setting the cap at that high a level and to the 35 percent rate discussed by Obama and Republicans that would apply to the taxable portion of estates.

The White House is preparing for significant opposition from Democrats and will send Vice President Biden to meet with Senate Democrats on Tuesday. Later on Tuesday, House Democrats are schedule to discuss the proposed deal.

bringing back the deaf tax should have been an immediate NO, NEVER.

Fock you. Compromise is eggactly what this country needs. No one side is perrrfect. As a mater of fact...Those making over 1 Mill should be taxed more.

What I want to know is...will the child tax credit be extended? That's 2G's in MY pocket.

Not a fan.

While I'm opposed to letting the tax cuts expire, I'd much rather see them expire and cut spending than continue them with more spending.

Extending unemployment benefits is a focking joke.

I'm being dead serious when I say that 6 months is plenty of time to get a job. Anything longer makes one lazy and worthless.

Hence, Me.

Explain. :dunno:

No one side is perrrfect.

So the compromise position is? What is that position?

As a mater of fact...Those making over 1 Mill should be taxed more.

Why?

What I want to know is...will the child tax credit be extended? That's 2G's in MY pocket.

So if something's in it for you, you're for it, but you cannot see what is in it for you if as many people as possible keep as much of their own money as possible?

Meh..I'd rather the 'rich' keep / get the tax break.

Extending unemployment just gives fuckos like myself longer to be complacent.

That should tell you you're wrong on this one.

Tell MDC to stop being cluelessly stupid: everyone puts their money back into the economy - and if they didn't (if they literally kept it in cash in a safe or something), they would be doing nothing different than the FED does regularly, when they take currency out of circulation.

I'm tired of economically uneducated people.

Tax cuts cost nothing to the government. It isn't the government's money.

I love it. The Bush tax cuts were the devil until after the election. Then it was just the tax cuts for the rich that were bad, which is just a token beef to excite the socialist base. Now Obama trips all over himself to reach a mic and sell out the entire anti Bush tax movement. Looks like he is starting to feel his inner Clinton (save my ass)side. I love it. Big Win and an even bigger sell out. libs are gonna jump off a cliff over this! Keeping all of the Bush tax cuts was much more important than the unemployment extensions in the grand scheme of things. Those idiots will just upgrade thier Campers with the money they don't have to work for.

 It is focking hilarious how the libs said the Bush tax cuts were only for the rich folks, for years. Now that it is time to put up or shut up, they finally admit they have been lying their asses off this ENTIRE time. Focking idiots.

Another few trillion lumped onto the federal debt - terrific!

The really stupid part on Obama's fault is that you just know the GOP is going to blame him for giving them exactly what they wanted when the bill comes.

How does keeping the tax rates the same increase the debt?

Might as well go spend a schload of money you don't have, then go in and blame it on your boss for not paying you more.

Course you might end up unemployed, like a lot of others if that top 2% tax goes up.

The tax cuts have already contributed to the debt. Extending them will continue to reduce revenue. :dunno:

This is my primary concern. The politics AGAIN win out.

Republicans get their tax cuts, which are SO necessary (a bit tongue-in-cheek) for the economic recovery, yet turn around and AGREE to more deficit spending to extend unemployment (the other sides argument for the economic recovery).

So who gets screwed?

you.

again.

I am sort of up in the air on UC benefit extensions. That money does go right back into the economy and keeps houses out of foreclosure and families out of bankruptcy, but man ... 99 weeks? At some point it just has to end. I'm totally against extending the tax cuts because I know that neither side is going to make the spending cuts necessary to make up the shortfall. Sure they'll crack down on earmarks and social welfare programs to some extent and I can get on board with that, but no one is going to make the hard choices on things like Medicare, Social Security and cuts to the military. Both sides just keep punting to the next guy to avoid blame.

In this economy I really don't think deficit reduction should be a top priority but if you're going to spend countless hours talking about it at least address the problem seriously. Instead we just added trillions to the debt - f'ing brilliant.

A compromise that focks America twice on both ends. Jeebus Fock, I can't believe nobody is actually serious about deficit reduction.

I kept the focking candle on for the Dems this long that maybe they were, hopefully the fiscally responsible party. No more. Blown out. Fock them too.

Focking great. Let's just keep the deficit exploding forever.

These tax cuts destroyed the budget. They need to go. Now Obama bought them and what he got in exchange is another six months of shovelling taxpayer money onto lazy focks mooching off the government tit.

Fock Obama. I'm fed up with him. I carried water enough for him. I tolerated the stupid wars. The stimulus I opposed but understood the logic even if I disagreed. I gave him teh benefit of the doubt. Now, it's clear, he really truly doesn't give a rats ass about the deficit.

Done. Focking Done.

Raise some focking taxes and/or cut some focking spending. Do something to look like you're serious about deficits. I can't believe this. The government cannot afford this.

A$$HOLES.

You partisan hacks never get it. Choosing a side is blatantly ignorant, regardless of your basic beliefs. Neither side is going to accomplish what you want. You can cream all of yourself every time your party gets elected or wins a majority, but you will never see either of these parties deliver on what they promise.

For every available job in the broader economy (not just where you live) there are 5 people looking for a job.

So, no, 6 months isn't necessarily "plenty of time to get a job."

How can you add to a deficit when it was never your money to begin with? It's our focking money. It's like planning a budget by counting on money you were going to borrow from your parents hoping they say yes.

Does anybody around here understand accounting, budgets, or anything financial? My God, I'm surrounded by idiots. :wall:

Focking dancing horses. We can't afford anything based on the value of a dollar as compared to 20 years ago, but some morons want taxes to keep going up. The state and local taxes have been destroying us the last couple of years. Obama giving tax cuts is a lie; my taxes go up and up.

A broader question might be, "How long should the government support your search?". Anyone who has ever been on unemployment knows that finding a job is fairly easy. Finding a job that you are willing to accept can be more difficult. The purpose of unemployment is to supplement a search for the former, not the latter.

It's certainly a tough question and I don't think there are any easy answers. Normally 6 months or so IS long enough to secure another job but, let's face it, these aren't "normal" times. The economy created a net 35k jobs last month. It needs to create a net 180k-ish just to keep up with the population.

We're going to see high unemployment through next year and probably 2012 as well (at a minimum). This will probably lead to a one-term presidency for Obama but I'm not sure it will change even after 2012. I've heard that it could be 2014-2015 before we start getting back to where we were prior to 2008.

I agree with you to some extent but a lot of the time the job that the unemployed applicant finds can't cover his or her bills. So yeah, if you're a software engineer who gets laid off you can always go work at Dunkin Donuts, but that won't do you a lot of good if the income won't cover your mortgage and if the job doesn't offer you and your family any health benefits.

I agree with 2 years is way too long but in this economy 6 months probably isn't enough.
