The Washington Redskins have traded disgruntled defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth to the New England Patriots for a fifth-round pick in 2013, three league sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed.

 

Word of the trade came early Thursday morning as Redskins players began trickling into the team headquarters for training camp physicals. Haynesworth had been scheduled for an 8:30 a.m.physical, according to another person familiar with the situation.

 

The Redskins hold their first training camp practice at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

 

Haynesworth’s departure doesn’t come as a surprise as he clashed with Coach Mike Shanahan over the player’s unwillingness to play nose tackle in the 3-4 defense. Interestingly enough, the Patriots run a 3-4 scheme as well.

 

Redskins players admitted the ongoing saga between player and coach took its toll on them last season.

 

Linebacker Bryan Orakpo said Tuesday that he hoped Washington found a quick resolution rather than letting Haynesworth become a distraction this season as well.

 

Washington saves itself a salary cap hit of roughly $5.4 million.

His next two years are reasonable at 5.4 million and 7.2 million. After that his salary jumps to 29 million and he will be history. I guess he would be on the outside if they stick with a 3-4 defense. A healthy Ty Warren on the other outside and wilfork in the middle. If belichick can get through to haynesworth then that could be a great dine.

I don't think haynesworth has ever been accused of beating up a woman. He has had temper issues with on the field stuff mostly and insubordination issues with coaches. Belichick is hoping he can control the on the field and insubordination issues. If he can get one or two great years out of him before he implodes then he is a huge bargain. Moss and Dillon are the blueprint. He got tremendous year ones out of both of them followed by a good year. They didn't pay the guarenteed money to Haynesworth so they can cut him at anytime and just be on the hook for his current year salary.

- I don't have a problem with the move. I think it helps and there is not a ton if risk

- I think that Myra would have objected to the trade due to Haynesworth's transgressions (alleged)

If I had to bet on whether he remains a turd or becomes a stud, I would bet on turd. BUT spending a 5th round pick to find out is WELL worth the risk.

Salary is not guaranteed money. They can cut him at any point and only have to pay him for the games he was on the team. There will be no accelerated cap hit.
