Self Defense Killing in Florida...Geeks got an opinion?

Recommended Posts

I think the point is that if there is any expert witness, said witness would be propely vetted and not some random person doing side work for their own publicity.

The funeral director was CSI-Sanford all the sudden. Is he now an expert medical examiner in your eyes?

Look, maybe this Zimmerman dude was in the wrong here, but there has been so much crapola bullshat going on that its really hard to decipher what is peanuts and what is shit right now. That's sort of the point.

That's a fair point. But some guys sure do seem to be bending over backwards to find things wrong with most of what we do know at this juncture.

Maybe some of us are just a little bit leery about what the media keeps telling us we know. The police, Zimmerman, and Martin have all been pretty tight lipped. Seems to me they're the best sources for determining what we know.

What do we know at this juncture? Is it more than you knew on page 1 when you had Zimmerman convicted of murder and in jail for the rest of his life?

I seriously can't believe this thread is at 23 pages.

Why are you shocked? You telling us "what we know so far" takes up about 7 pages.

Well yeah, actually. New developments have been minimal and most people here have pretty clearly and extensively stated their opinions on it.

I got tired of this discussion last week. We don't know anything new, we probably won't ever, the whole thing is no longer about a shooting and entirely a political pissing contest. I'm amazed there's still a heated back and forth going on about this now that the horse isn't just dead but beaten into a fine paste.

This is the kind of thought provoking discussion kutulu brings to the board.

I'm sure you would still be touting some mythical 99% accuracy rate.

From IGW's article:
Owen told the newspaper he used software called Easy Voice Biometrics to compare Zimmerman's voice to the 911 call screams.

"I've run it against 300 voices and it was better than 99 percent in all cases," he told MSNBC when asked about its accuracy.

Owen told the newspaper that the software compared the screams to Zimmerman's voice and returned a 48 percent match. He said he would expect a match of higher than 90 percent, considering the quality of the audio.

"As a result of that, you can say with reasonable scientific certainty that it's not Zimmerman," Owen told the Sentinel.

That's where I got the number. I tried to look up test characteristics but could not find a definitive source. What do you know that I don't about the merits of voice recognition? And weren't you campaigning for a sample of Martin's voice earlier - why would you care if you don't believe in the technology?

EDIT: Looks like Nikki found some decent info about voice recognition.

So you get the person to say the same words twice and compare them. I can agree that there could be some validity and level of accuracy when done using that method. That's not what happened here. Nice try though. At least you provided a link for once. Too bad it doesn't support your assertion.

So all they have to do is get Zimmerman to scream for them a couple times?

If Zimmerman was running for governor or congress and had a (D) by his name, would they, the media, brand him a white hispanic or just a hispanic? My bet is he would be labeled a hispanic.

The fact that this is igored tells you all you need to know about the American Media.

It was also from 21 years ago. I intentionally linked an old ass article about it. I would venture to guess the technology has somewhat improved over the past 21 years.

Whatever. Some people are going to see what they want to see as relevant "evidence" in this case because for some reason it has become about politics, race wars, etc. instead of an interesting case about an unarmed teenager being shot and the guy who did it not being charged because of some strange laws in Florida.

Well that would only be because the report you linked to used completely different methodologies than were used in this case. That pretty much makes your link worthless in the context of this case. Trust me, if you ever present actual, relevant evidence to support one of your assertions I'll acknowledge it and concede the point.

I am aware of that and was aware of it when I posted it. The key was that the article was 21 years old. I've said this multiple times, but I am not going to sit here on my computer all day long and google shiit to try to prove things and pretend I am some kind of expert in something that I am not, unlike you. I am not a lawyer. I am not a forensics expert. I am giving opinions and attempting to have discussions about things that are interesting to me.

In this instance, and based on the credentials of the two guys who independently did the analyses of the voice, I am inclined to believe it wasn't Zimmerman. Which was what I thought the first time I heard it and it made me nauseous because it sounded like a teenager begging for his life to me... and then gun shots... and then nothing. I even said that I may watch too much TV and may be over-estimating the accuracy of this science.

I already said that the DOJ should do comparisons of both of their voices against the 911 tapes for the actual case. I'm not on the jury. I have no say in this case. This is an interwebs message bored. But the fact that two guys who actually are experts on this tried to do a voice identification and got less than a 50% match leads me to believe that it probably wasn't Zimmerman on that tape. Along with the fact that the cries IMMEDIATELY ceased to exist as soon as the gun shots were fired, which made me sick to my stomach the first time I listened to it. :dunno:

Unless the voice recognition software is perfect it is worthless; the libruhl media and the secular scientist co-conspirators can never be trusted. This is all a re-election ploy for you-know-who.

Bias is a one way street, which only goes left. The media equivalent of NASCAR.

I honestly do not understand what is political about this, unless you are fixated on some black vs. white vs. latino vs. arab vs. indian thing...

Maybe it's because I have lived my entire life around diversity and I don't form negative opinions about people based on their race. I literally saw this case from the beginning as an unarmed teenager walking home from a store to his Dad's house, who did nothing wrong, and ended up dead on the street because some neighborhood Batman decided he was suspicious because he was black and wearing a hoodie.

I stopped watching the local news in Philly because it would depress me too much. I would literally start crying while watching it and my ex told me we weren't going to watch it anymore.

This case is just outright disgusting to me. Maybe it's because I've grown up in a diverse culture my whole life and I don't see the difference between races in my everyday life. I don't look at black kids in hoodies and fear them. As a matter of fact, I've done a personal scientific experiment and I've concluded that black kids in hoodies are more likely to be polite to me than normal white people. I go to the corner gas station store a block from my house at least once a day to pick up soda, etc. Without fail, the black guys, even the hoodie ridden teenage thugs always hold the door for me and are polite. Some times they seem to be stoned. But compared to the white people who the majority of the time slam the door in my face, I always love the black "hoods" better.

When I started hearing about this case it wasn't about race for me except that the kid was probably profiled based on being black, and his young life was cut short by a neighborhood Batman who determined he was bad news based on how he looked. How is that not outrageous to people? If George Zimmerman would have sat in his car and waited for the police to come and check out the situation, which there wasn't one, Trayvon Martin would be alive right now. How does that not piss people off? DO YOU UNDERSTAND THIS TEENAGER WOULD STILL BE ALIVE IF GEORGE ZIMMERMAN SAT IN HIS CAR AND WAITED FOR THE POLICE TO COME? I don't even get it.

And all of you people that are somehow trying to justify this... trying to make it seem like it was somehow warranted... even with the "facts" that we've been given. My God... take a look at yourselves. Seriously... take a deep long look at what could possibly make you think an unarmed teenager should be shot dead on the street after being pursued by a vigilante with a gun. What if that was your kid (tattoos and piercings and questionable tweets and all) and whether or not you would have taught them to fight back if someone approaches them? And if that fighting back should be a death sentence for them...

OK. You wanna know what you assfock? Now I'm going to go all libtard on all of you. My father is the most amazing man I have ever met in my life. He treated my mother like a goddamm princess, but it was never enough for her. She is a focking ###### who never worked a day in her life, yet constantly complained that they weren't rich enough and how much her life sucked. My dad sat there and took it all. He put my sister and I through Ivy League schools. He worked his focking ass off to make sure we were successful and had the best future ahead of us. He never complained... he did what he thought was his job as father and provider of the family.

And... shockingly... after decades of doing this... it turns out he is gay. He was so afraid of the societal implications and prejudices of being gay that he pretended his whole life to be a hetereosexual male to fit in and do what he thought he needed to do, especially according to his religion.

He was diagnosed with leukemia a few years ago. He doesn't have much longer to live. And that was what made him change his outlook and decide to stop living a lie and be who he was and who he was born as. And he is living his last few years as he probably should have his whole life.

The black guy I saw him with... the one I thought was his boyfriend... that guy is a great friend of his that he counselled from suicide. My dad has now dedicated his free time to working with a help group that helps gay men deal with their sexuality and understand that they can live with it without killing themselves. He is much older than the majority of the men in that group and he acts as a father/mentor to them to help them to get through the rough times of dealing with their homosexuality and the effects it has on their family relationships and their personal well being.

So basically... if you guys want to use the F word and make jokes and do whatever it is you do behind the comfort of your keyboards... none of you will ever be half the man my dad is. Not by a long shot.
