cbfalcon 825 Posted July 10, 2017 Hope you got to play it - I did Saturday...... Wow - I still can't believe it. Not that it's Colonial or anything, but when you compare it to what it used to be - just shocking.... I absolutely loved the layout - a total combo of everything: dogleg rights, dogleg lefts, elevation, etc.. But perhaps the most standout features to me where the bunkering contours and incorporation of native grass areas - really impressive. Difficulty? I thought it was pretty challenging - but also very playable. The fairways are noticeably wide and give most all a chance to play from the short grass.. The mowed down, domed banks of the greens make for all kinds of creative options - all the while providing all kinds of trouble if you get on the wrong side of one. And then of course the greens themselves, really hard and firm - no way to stop it at the flag (as I found out over and over). I was 1 over on the front, had 2 birdies, a double and a bogey... The double I had was on #4, the par 5. I had 140 to the back pin, landed it right at the pin - went over into the back pond... The back I limped in with 42. I hit it into some spots I just didn't know where I was going, like #11, drove it too far right for another double... Finished with 79 - not too bad for a 1st trip around the place. I'll start off by saying.....on the range beforehand, I started shanking everything, and on this day I in fact was able to carry my swing over from the range to the course...shank ob on 1, shank into the water on 2, shank on 3, punched it around 4 like a 12 year old, shank into water on 5th. So with a triple, triple, bogey, double, double start, the day quickly became about rebuilding a swing and seeing the course.....and I figured out what I was doing on the 6th and actually went par, par, birdie, bogey to close the side, but it was a thing where the rest of the day I was very mechanical, and the moment I relaxed and thought I could swing freely I'd hit another shank. So with that explosion out of the way.... I absolutely loved loved loved the course. Agree with everything you said....My favorite courses are those that are wide and playable off the tee, in that you aren't going to lose your ball or have to punch out sideways, yet their are strategically placed fairway bunkers that force/encourage you to make a play, whether that be a carry or layup, keeping it left or right, a fade, a draw, etc. I feel like every hole qualified. None of the tee shots were intimidating per say, yet none allowed you to just bomb it without some sort of risk..........And I loved the areas around the greens for the same reasons noted by you. The domed bank on 12 (200 yard par 3) really stood out as I pushed my ball about 8 yards right yet caught the bank and ended up with a 15 foot birdie attempt. Also loved the use of levels and bowls and whatnot on the greens. Big picture...it felt like a much more relaxing Bridlewood maybe?....Every hole was fun and had quite a bit of character. Will see how time treats it, but I felt like it jumped right up to the top of my most enjoyable course list. We have some idealGolfer deals we have to use these next few weeks, but I'm itching to get right back out there are soon as I can. Oh, and most importantly since it is Rockwood, twice we were yelled at by passersby hoping to mess up our shots. That's when I smiled and truly knew I was back home. Cruzer 1,995 Posted July 10, 2017 I absolutely loved loved loved the course. Agree with everything you said.... The sculpting of the fairways, bunkers and stuff - you just don't see that on city courses... least not here. The greens are new, will take a year or two to settle in and get to where they will hold... We caught a day with absolutely not wind at all - not even a whisper.. I think she will give you all you want when it's up and blowing it's usually 20.

cbfalcon 825 Posted July 17, 2017 I suck at life... Historically, I get the shanks about once every 25 rounds. It's usually just 2-4 shots, the rest of the day is spent guarding against them, and that's that. A week later they aren't in my head and it doesn't happen again for another 25 rounds or so..........Well last week I had them. This week on the range my irons are great, but once I get to the course I start shanking it again. Pathetic. I think I lost about 7 balls on the front side and went over 50 for the first time that I can remember in quite awhile. I think I had a completely different swing thought on every hole. Looking back at my scores, this is the first time I've went 90+ in consecutive rounds since May of 2014 when I did it 3 straight times.....That said, there is hope. Didn't lose a ball on the back 9. And after a smooth 4 putt triple on #10 and a double on #11, I slowly got it together. Played the last 7 at +2 I think. Going to have to make a trip to the range this week though, because I don't feel like going out there this weekend not knowing what's about to happen. dain11279 976 Posted July 17, 2017 Played a scramble yesterday at a real sh1thole. Basically a cow pasture. Hit a 5 wood from about 210 on one hole to about 20 feet and we made the putt for eagle. Only one other team made 3 on the hole and there was only 2 skins. And we missed the 50/50 by one number

White 69.6 119 6020 It's a 9 hole course, you play the whites 1st time around and blue 2nd time around. the par 5 on the 1st 9 turns into a par 4 and a long par 4 turns into a par 5 it's 1/2 a mile from the ocean, it's typically very windy. Most of the time the 1st par 5 I am lucky to get there in 3 its really not a good course for me. too many holes are 380+ I'm usually hitting a hybrid for a 2nd I am playing Tewksbury next Friday, ever played? Filthy Fernadez 2,696 Posted July 18, 2017 I just got fitted for a new driver (moving off my Titleist 910 D3 and fairway woods). Hit the Ping G Series 9 deg with stock shaft the best (swing speed was a little disappointing though 94 mph but I'm in the middle of lessons). The Ping is extremely forgiving. Shot 38/38 (4 birdies and 2 doubles) last Thursday playing blue tees (Gold/Blue/White/Green/Red). 6300 yds Rated 70.3 with 129 slope.
DankNuggs 305 Posted July 18, 2017 Ping G is awesome. I have last years G30 driver with an oban shaft, G 3wd with a tour AD-DI shaft and the 3H with stock stiff shaft. Ridiculously forgiving clubs. I hit the hybrid so much further than the 3i that kept my 3i in the bag as a 200 club. But debating about adding a 60 wedge and yanking it out. Spent a some time on the range with the wedge and was getting more confident with the contact and had it doing a half hop stop. If it translates to the course it's probably more productive than the rare occasion I'm hitting the 3i

BunnysBastatrds 2,441 Posted July 18, 2017 Heads up for those wanting to come to New Orleans for premium golf. There's not much left. Outside of the TPC and the reopening of the South Course at City Park, it's becoming a ghost town. Sad on so many levels. Best bet for good golf is the casinos in Biloxi an hour away. There opening of the City Park course is nice. Very easy. When I played it before Katrina it was tough. Great from tee to greens now. Now it's easy. You'll shoot well. They do the blue/white boxes. Very fun.

listen2me 23 1,873 Posted July 18, 2017 Shot 34-41 yesterday. The 34 was a 1 under front side with a double on number 1 and 3 birdies. I was 1 over going into 15. Hit a nice drive. Then proceed to slice one OB. 8. Came back with a par, double, birdie to close the round for a 75 that was actually pretty upsetting. My buddy who is a better golfer than I am made the turn in 33. So we were playing some good golf and I had visions of beating him. He ended up with a bogey on 18 for a 70. He doesn't make 8s randomly like I can.

I honestly don't remember the last time I shot over 50....But my handicap is right around 10.5. I just have to keep it in play to shoot in the low 40s luckily. Gotta say though...This same course I shot a 77 on just a few months back. I thought I found something that day that was going to carry over into my having a big summer, yet here I am having my worst stretch in 3 years....I think my problem is I never ever practice (been to the range maybe twice this year), and yet I continually tinker in an effort to get better instead of just sticking with what is working. I'm the 10 handicap that wants to be a 5, yet thinks the reason he isn't there yet is because he needs to find the right swing as opposed to his needing to practice more. In short, I am golf dumb. Meh I'm a 10. If I am playing bad and shooting upward of 90 I am more just trying to remember the things I do that makes me at least a 10. Just trying to get back to that. If I am playing well for a stretch that will maybe be the time I tinker. I just don't tinker much. I don't think over the golf ball. When I am playing my best I just swing the club. I have been playing long enough that the swing and shot is there if I just get out of my own way. I'm never going to have time to make Fred Couples' swing. I drive the ball well and hit and miss with irons. I feel when I play my best and the only real sensible practice for me is on or around the green. I'm not going to hit 16 greens a round like a 2 handicap might.

My advice to you (or anyone driver shopping really) - don't get too caught up in the head. Almost all the top line club makers have maxed out the c.o.r. boundaries, maxed out the 460 cc size and lowered CG and spin rates to optimum levels - the most important part of any club fitting is getting the right shaft... I'd also suggest looking to go with more loft... At least 10*

I'm very solid with my irons (for a 10). That means if I am inside of 160 or so, I'm putting or chipping on the next shot.....My driver is what's hit or miss. I can live with a draw or push, but sometimes I'll start pulling shots and that kills me. Then while trying to fix that, I can get way out of rhythm at times. I will agree that I don't have technical thoughts at all over the ball when playing well. Normally my only thought is "soft hands", which keeps tension out of my swing. But when it goes bad like the last couple weeks, technical thoughts over every swing.

Obviously there have been different swing thoughts over the years. cbfalcon 825 Posted July 24, 2017 I'm back from the dead in terms of hitting a golf ball. Made a trip to the range last Wednesday. Set my phone up behind me and videotaped a few swings. My posture had gotten way too upright, and my swing had gotten way too flat. The result was I was getting stuck bigtime. One of those things where I looked at myself on video and wondered how I was even hitting the ball at all......So I fixed the posture and concentrated on keeping the arms in front of me during the swing. Fixed everything. It's not a new discovery. I've made the fix before, but over time bad habits creep back in. I ended up shooting an 83 at Cleburne Golf Links. Could have been better as I had three weird par 5 experiences. The first one has a giant double green, and I somehow zoned out and hit wedge to the wrong flag 50 yards left of my flag. Then twice on par 5's I went for it in 2, thought I was good, only to then get up near the green and not be able to find my ball.....On all 3, I then chunked a chip on the way to double bogey. But I have decided I'm going to make myself go to the range once a week for the next several weeks and see what happens. For the past few years I've been stuck as a 10-11 handicap that only practices about once every 4 months. I THIN I have the potential to get down into single digits pretty easily with just a touch more consistency, so I guess we will see....assuming I stick with the range declaration. DankNuggs 305 Posted July 24, 2017 I go back and forth of par 5s whether I blast the 3w and have a half shot wedge or I lay up to a distance. More often than not I blast away, but when you muff the chip it drives you nuts
