Poem gets high school football player suspended, kicked off team

Recommended Posts

A high school football player in northeastern Ohio says he was kicked off the team and suspended from school after he wrote a poem for English class critical of his team.

According to Fox8.com, which first reported the story, 16-year-old Nick Andre was punished after reading the poem in class. The assignment was to write about something that made him angry, and he took out his frustration on the 1-7 Rittman High School gridiron team.

The principal of the school southwest of Akron said the teen "wrote a mean and disrespectful poem about another student and our athletic director/head coach." The principal called it "hazing, harassment."

“Who am I harassing or hazing? I mean I didn’t state any names,” Andre told Fox8.com.

Andre thinks he had a right to express himself. But he was suspended from school for four days and removed from the team for its final two games.

His mother, Julie, told the station the principal refused to sign a suspension notification letter during a meeting with the school's principal on Monday.

“All he could refer to was bullying. This poem was bullying, and my comment was, ‘Why would the teacher entertain this assignment because you know, you don’t know what you may get from teenage kids, so to me, I couldn’t understand bullying,” Julie Andre said.

Rittman School District officials declined to respond to a request for comment from Fox8.com.

Cleveland-based civil-rights attorney Avery Friedman told the station he believes Nick Andre’s rights have been violated by school administrators.

“The breadth of expression, even in public schools, is virtually limitless, unless speech is creating material disruption to the educational process, which certainly isn’t here,” Friedman said

Virtually the same thing happened on Glee, when one of the football players threw a slushie in the face of one of the emo's.

It was incredibly powerful.

Fortunately, no problem is bigger than spontaneous song and dance numbers with perfect orchestration, back-up singers and choreography .

Hopefully, that's what happens here.

No wait, one of the emos kilt himself on heroin and booze.

But then, everyone sang about it.

And everything was okay after that.

So, I'm pretty sure this is just a teachable moment.

I'm the first guy to jump in the ring to defend free speech. But, I'm having trouble with this one.

What kind of self respecting football player acts like half a fagg and writes a poem?

If a kid on my football team publicly criticizes his teammates and/or his coach (particularly in a poem), then he should not show up for the next practice or game. That is, unless he thinks that doing up-downs in the port-a-potty for the entire practice/game is not fun. :dunno:

Although the article doesn't specifically say "poem", I think the assignment was to write a poem about something that made him angry.

Losing season,

Favoritism,

Non-stop passes from best friend to best friend.

Continuously doing what doesn’t work,

The inability to separate being a father and a coach,

Dropped passes,

But yet still the “super star”,

Yeah right.

Where’s my scholarship?

I can drop passes,

Run backwards,

Miss tackles,

And be afraid to take a hit.

That’s top of the line Div. 1 material right there.

If that’s what they wanted,

They definitely got it.

This whole town will be glad when he’s gone.

For anyone who doesn’t understand what I’m saying,

AKRON’S SCREWED!

The bullies don't like being called out!

Clearly you know the whole story based on this one kid's interpretation.

It's pretty clear the poem is targeted primarily at one kid and coach and not just the innocent general commentary he made it out to be. Maybe this kid is just a whiny dooshbag?

It's also highly hilarious that you are today b!tching about teachers being bullies when just last week or the week before you were defending a gym teacher who punched a 14 year old girl in the face because she pushed him. I don't think you know what you think.

 I never defended anyone I simple stated that I was taught that if you hit someone you should expect to be hit back . Am I wrong?

You assume why too much my narrow minded friend.

sounds to me like the kid had enough of small town favoritism and the coach and his pos son just could not handle being called out for being a large part of a 1 and 7 season. Crappy players and crappy coaches rarely enjoy being called out for being crappy.

I think we all know first hand exactly what this poem is talking about.

Team is 1-7, they deserve ridicule... Kick him off the team if he is content with 1-7 and a participation trophy.... Coach should have made him captain
