TWO players in the NFL blew off fingers during July 4th with fireworks.

 

 

 

Out of the 4 major sports, NFL players are easily the dumbest. NBA are not far behind. Does it have anything to do with how long they go to college or that they don't really even go to real classes when they actually go to college?

Good point about the college years, I think another point is the humility in the other sports. If you're a first rounder in MLB, you may never see a MLB roster, usually takes 2-3 years at least in the minors. You don't instantly get a contract with a shoe company and people saying you have to play.

 

There just seems to be more of a trajectory of instant riches and gratification in the NBA and NFL.

Not sure I could really gauge it based on sport, it might be safe to say that there are scant few players in the NBA and NFL who are not complete idiots, MLB is just full of crybabies, not sure about the NHL.

Every sport has their cry babies, but the NHL certainly weeds them out. They routinely have dental surgery al night just so they can play again, hell one guy literally died in the locker room last year. He was revived and wanted to get back in the game.

As a percentage, but the NBA only has 12 man rosters, if it was 52, probably have a lot more dumbassery going on

Totally, I think he played for Dallas. He slumped on the bench, the trainers realized he wasn't breathing and his heart stopped. Gave him the paddles in the locker room, and he wanted to go back in. They had to force him to go to the hospital.

NBA and NFL get some college.

So many MLB and NHLers are drafted out of high school.

Perhaps. He likely only gets the franchise tag contract, not great for him. But would still have to pass a physical, and even if he fails that he could likely fight any outcome where it is suggested he is less than say 90%

I'd say the order in the OP is correct. If you take out quarterbacks. Who generally are much smarter than the rest of the players. (I put generally in italics because I realize that you get the occasional intelligent lineman or linebacker.

 

I'd put the list this way (dumbest first):

 

NFL defensive backs, receivers, linebackers, running backs, defensive lineman)

NBA

NFL quarterbacks, offensive lineman

NHL

MLB

I actually discussed this years ago with some people. It all has to do with the majority of social and financial class each sport has. Nfl and nba have a lot of kids from poor social and financial classes. It doesn't take a lot of money for the kid to go play because pretty much all equipment is provided for them. For nhl and MLB the social and financial classes these kids come from are higher. It takes more money for a kid to play both of those sports than it does football or basketball.

 

Now, since we have established that. If someone is in a poorer social and financial class then their schooling, intelligence, and common sense fall below average. In retrospect, the kids who are in the high social and financial chain will have been taught better and almost always (not 100% because yes there are stupid people who are rich as well) have better common sense.

Agree on basketball, easy to get a ball, find a place to play, easy access.

 

Football, is bloody expensive though, and a huge consumer of time too.

 

Baseball is also easy on the wallet, the notion continues to be trotted out that AA's don't play because they are priced out, and this is false but an easy excuse. Meanwhile, the uber-wealthy (scarcasm) latino's continue to rely on their extravagant wealthy to make inroads..... its an easy way to pretend that AA's are being locked out, but the reality is that baseball is boring and overall participation is not what it used to be.
