'I can't believe the numbers': Mass shootings, homicide rates, gun sales hit highest levels since 1990s

Hill's Aug. 9 death in Cleveland Heights makes him one of the more than 100 people killed in the Cleveland area so far this year, a sharply higher tally than the 84 homicides for the same period last year.

Both shootings and homicides are up dramatically from last year across the United States due to what experts, activists and family members said is a toxic stew of post-COVID 19 lockdowns, economic uncertainty and a flood of guns. Complicating matters: social-media taunting that allows young people to broadcast their intentions, fueling the cycle.

"We're seeing the same thing every urban community is seeing: Murder is up, violent crime is up," said Houston police Sgt. Joe Gamaldi. "We're seeing it in real-time on the front lines."

Through Sept. 2, more than 13,700 people had been shot dead in the United States in 2021, a 13% increase compared to the same time in 2020 and a nearly 37% increase compared to that same period in 2019, according to statistics compiled by the Gun Violence Archive.

And it's not just that there are more shootings. More people are being shot in each incident, in part due to the availability of extended magazines and easy-to-carry "bullpup" style semi-automatic rifles, said Mark Bryant, executive director of the Gun Violence Archive, which tracks gun violence nationally using a combination of police statistics and media reports.

According to the group's statistics, the nation has seen 464 mass shootings — defined as four or more people shot in a single incident — so far in 2021, compared to 386 by this time last year, a 15.5% increase. For comparison, 2019 had 417 mass shootings in the entire year, according to GVA's definition.

Portland alone had nine shootings in 16 hours on Aug. 31, the police department reported.

Good thing the liberals in this thread are confirming that crime is going down. Otherwise the facts may just have had me convinced that it's not. Phew.

Seven shootings on Saturday left a dozen people wounded in Chicago, according to the police department. Shootings are up 9% so far this year compared to the same time frame in 2020.

Yep. The libs want to control the blacks. They need them to continue to abort their kids and shoot their neighbors at an extreme rate to keep them from being too large of a group but rather just the right size. They need the stupid ones to survive and keep voting for them.

It is pathetically obvious.  They don't even hide it.  Election year here comes race baiting and BLM sweeps the world.  Biden takes presidency.  Like clockwork BLM backs up into its hole.

How can anyone take these movements serious?  A middle schooler could put 2 and 2 together.  But each election cycle they dupe the same idiots.  It is like taking candy from a baby.

I saw a video of one of these gunfights the other day.  Gruesome and disturbing.  And the Cucks don't want anyone to see what's happening or even mention it.

Mandatory criminal background checks on all gun purchases, immediate mandatory reporting of any lost or stolen firearm, and criminal conviction for owning an unsecured gun that is lost or stolen and subsequently used in a felony.

Make it happen.

As a long time gun owner I don't have a problem with any of the items you listed.  The problem is it doesn't help.  Felons can not have a gun yet they all have guns.  Fully automatic weapons are and have been illegal yet felons still have them.

You want to get serious about gun violence?  Death penalty for anyone using a gun in the committing of a crime.

Go after gunman's family as well if they are caught holding their gun sideways while committing a crime.

People do take them seriously.  They are 100% indoctrinated in this excrement.  You have people walking around convinced, convinced....., that white surpremacy is an actual problem....is THE BIGGEST problem we face today.  It is absolute focking madness.

You have people walking around who thoroughly believe that this society is built against "people of color".  Instead of lifting people up, they work to scare them.

Bingo.

I am pro 2nd amendment big time.  But I am fine with tighter restrictions as long as thry are sensible.

I think most people would be.  But people don't trust the left.  Give an inch they want a mile sort of thing.

But yes, this hardly helps stop gun violence in liberal cities.  Not sure why people can't wrap theit head around that fact.

A law without enforcement is a suggestion. Liberals have shown little appetite for tighter enforcement of existing law. So they "need" to pass more laws to get guns out of the hands of more people in the hopes that it affects the supply in high crime areas.

Felons can get guns because most states don’t have universal background checks on all gun purchases. Felons aren’t buying guns from a licensed dealer.

How bout we start by requiring criminal background checks on all gun sales?

I disagree with your first statement.  How is a universal background check going to stop fully automatic fire arms that that are currently illegal? How could you possibly prove that universal background checks will stop felons from having guns when you already admit they are obtained illegally by criminals?  How does that account for guns being smuggled into this country?

I'm fine with that but it won't help.  More bureaucracy, more wasted tax dollars very few results.

I’d have to look it up again but the FBI says that most guns were purchased legally and change hands 6-7 times before they’re used in a crime. Universal background checks would prevent some guns from falling off the grid / into the wrong hands.

Yea some guns.  Just means more of a market for them in the crime world.

It is funny the 2 vastly different angles Dems take on drugs and guns.

They change hands a lot amongst criminals.

The point is that most guns illegally purchased by criminals were first legally purchased by a law abiding citizen before disappearing into the black market. Universal background checks wouldn’t eliminate all illegal gun ownership but our laws now are laughable. In most states you can sell a handgun to some guy you meet on the corner without a background check or any paper trail at all.

I'd have to look more into it.  I'm not a big gun collector but do back the 2nd amendment.  I am not aware just how easy it is to buy a gun in certain states.  I know guns can travel.  But these mass gun deaths are happening in states with stricter laws.

I am in NY.  Couldn't tell you how easy it is to buy a gun in Arkansas or South Dakota.

Like I said I am fine with sensible tightening of gun sales.  But many people see it as give an inch they will take a mile.  Gave into gay marriage.  FF a few years down thr road and now we need to know people's pronouns and set up special bathrooms for people who want to mutilate their junk.  The goofy crazy sick liberal utopia isn't for everyone.

So say that helps.  Then they get guns that a smuggled in.  The result is the same no reduction in crimes committed with a gun.  This is the same stupid thing the government is doing with illegal drugs.  Focused on stopping the supply.  That never works.   I prefer treating the problem and not the symptoms.

I’m guessing it’s a hell of a lot harder to smuggle guns into the country than it is to buy one illegally right here.

Not sure how you’d treat the problem of gun violence vs the symptoms.

Marijuana comes in in bails weighing hundreds of pounds.  Guns would not be hard to get.

Simple.  Death penalty with no appeal.  :dunno:

Unfortunately the problem will not be solved because America doesn't really care because most of the gun violence is minorities killing minorities.

People are importing MJ from overseas? Seems like a lot of rigamarole given how much pot is grown right here. Same reason you wouldn’t bother importing guns. Why go through the hassle and risk when you can get a gun anywhere here.

Death penalty without appeal for all gun crimes isn’t going to ever happen and I doubt it would be a real deterrent anyway.

What we have been saying all along.  Cucks talk about more imaginary gun laws while they are slaughtering each other in a Lib stronghold with enough imaginary gun laws already.  It's all fake, they don't care until white people try to defend themselves of course.  Then they go crazy.

https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/another-6-million-marijuana-seized-port-buffalo

Not overseas but yes it still comes in although marijuana is basically legal now.

Perhaps I am wrong.  But some murderous felon isnt going to his local bar and asking Fred thr bartender to buy him a gun.  Guns are stolen.  Guns are traded within intercity gangs.

Like I said put a little tighter restriction on getting guns.  But that isnt slowing it down much.  There is a marijuana dispensary on each corner in some places.  They will not sell to minors.  How on earth do the minors end up with weed so very easy?

Throw the trash in jail.  Let them rot.  One less felon on the street teaching young kids how to be trash.  That will work just as well.  Today we are so lenient on every crime.  An 18 year old kid in Chicago might say hey if I get caught with this thing I may do 5...worth it.  Thr same kid may say not worth it of he knows it is 20 instead.  Yes thr really dumb hopeless ones won't care, they like prison.   But it would deter some.  Would it not?

It is coming across the northern and southern boarders.  So are a lot of fully automatic weapons and regular weapons.  That would simply pick up.  Our government doesn't seem to care about any of the illegal products flooding across our boarders.

So neither one of our solutions solves the problem.  Cool.  Nice conversation.  Have a good weekend.
