*** 80's Song Draft *** Completed

Recommended Posts

I had a few songs on my list and was torn as to which one to finish out with. Last night I was searching for something totally unrelated and came across this little gem and decided to go with it instead.

16:08 Life in a Northern Town - Dream Academy

This is a great song. Id forgotten about. Thanks for the refresher.

 I almost pulled the trigger on that one but wanted some Ritchie Blackmore on my team and struggled between Street Of Dreams and Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers.

and I can't stand Aerosmith. :o

Have you listened to much of their 70's work when they were heavy into drug use?

To be honest, I just never cared for any of their stuff... Tyler's voice was annoying as hell to me..... But it was prolly more just me, I wasn't much a rocker growing up.

I really enjoyed this draft fellas. I have listened to more music outside of work than anytime since, well, since I quit drinking. A lot of good memories listening to some of these songs. Thanks for running TTBOM and thanks for stepping in and organizing the lists Volty.

I'm down for whichever one you guys decide to do next.

Its so much better than their 80s/90s stuff.

Lump them in with Joel, Elton, REO and Journey who all did their best work in the 70s but got lame in the 80s.

Absolutely and if I may I'd add ZZ Top and Foreigner to that list.

Has a definite decision been made if were doing another draft and if so 70's or 90's?

Yes we are. I think we all agree this has been a lot of fun, with a lot of memories and new discoveries and revisiting songs we'd not heard in a long time. I'd go as far as to call it a smashing success. And anybody tired and maybe doesn't want to do it again and bow out, well, there seems to be plenty of interest from others who want to join.

As for which one, I don't know, we haven't talked about that yet but speaking for myself, although I love the 70s much better (look at my picks and guess why) I'd rather do the 90s next anyway.

I;ve been listening to this song, went to find out out who the dreaded "Fred" is.

One thing I did was I looked up Rock Lobster and thankfully it was a '79 hit since if you had picked it, it would not have gone over nearly so well. I would not be looking up Roam or Love Shack if we'd started with Rock Lobster. (Fred is good in Love Shack btw.). This song and Love Shack are both a helluva lot better.

Thus far, this is still my favorite pick in the draft for the impact it will have on what I'll be listening to in the future.

Glad I could help and in defense of Rock Lobster it was one of those songs like we all have that brings back memories. For me the song was played nightly at a bar(the full album version) I frequented when in college,it was always played around closing time and if you ever saw Animal House(toga party Shout) there was a similar scene at this bar with RL and the "down down" part.

Unless I missed it, one of the biggest, and most successful pop/r&b artists of all time is still not represented in this draft. I never liked any of his solo stuff at the time, and going back thru his catalog during this draft, I can confirm that I still don't.

Ironically, I absolutely love this R&B song his former band released in 1985, after he dumped them. It is the best song they ever did, with or without him, and my favorite R&B song ever.

It's also a stirring tribute to 2 of the greatest voices of all time:

16.10 Nightshift - The Commodores

This is the song I was looking for last night. It was driving me up a wall not being able to think of the title or the lyrics. I'm googling Night train and songs about dying and trains??? I finally went through every 80's year of the Billboard top 100.

As a kid my best friend at the times dad died and I remember being in the car with him and his mom right after and this song meant so much to her, you could just sense it.

Great song.

I could have been "Hey TBBOM, would you...." but I knew what I wanted done, and I didn't need to bug the commish to do it when I was able to just do it myself.

The first was just a cut and paste, the first few were ugly so I cleaned it up some, organized it better.

16.11. X - Fourth Of July

This song is so good I thought about leading off with it. If you listen to anything on my list this is the one. It's a shame it was not given any play back then. If you've ever been there at the end of a relationship and you just want to end it in peace, this is the song that sums up that feeling. And it rocks. Can't see not loving it after about the third time you play it. Loud. Hope you enjoy it.

I promised myself I was going to listen to every song in this draft. You guys put this stuff there for me to sample and I'm going to do it. I'm not willing to go another 30 years without Roam or What I Like About You. That said, I'm just not ready to jump into another draft for a bit. it's going to take me some time to digest what we have here and appreciate it before we start our next draft. Not too long is needed.... I'm about half done.

Both were left off my draft as I finished it up with a heavier sound.
