5-Points 3,437 Posted June 1, 2018 37.8 Ira Hayes - Native American Ira Hamilton Hayes (January 12, 1923 – January 24, 1955) was a Pima Native American and a United States Marine who was one of the six flag raisers immortalized in the iconic photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II.[5][6] Hayes was an enrolled member of the Gila River Pima Indian Reservation located in the Pinal and Maricopa counties in Arizona. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve on August 26, 1942 and, after recruit training, volunteered to become a Paramarine. He fought in the Bougainville and Iwo Jimacampaigns in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. On February 23, 1945, he helped to raise an American flag over Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, an event photographed by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press. Hayes and the other five flag-raisers became national heroes as a result. In 1946, he was instrumental in revealing the true identity of one of the other pictured Marines, who was killed in action on Iwo Jima. However, Hayes was never comfortable with his fame, and after his service in the Marine Corps, he descended into alcoholism. He died of exposure to cold and alcohol poisoning after a night of drinking on January 23–24, 1955. He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemeteryon February 2, 1955. 38.1 Helen Keller - Woman

Voltaire 5,276 Posted June 2, 2018 Chinese History draft next? You're still in China, right? Still in China, yes. Sixteen+ years now. That may not be the case too much longer or maybe it will. If it were just me, we'd stay permanently. I have a nice school, everything is going well. My kids though, the Chinese education mill kicks into high gear in 7th grade and stays intense through 12th. It's six years of hell. I'm looking at my options. 1) Suck it up and endure it 2) Pull them out and homeschool 3) Get them into a Michigan online public school. They'd have to attend class from 9 PM until 3 AM. I'm not sure I still qualify as a Michigan resident though. But I keep my driver's licence and voting records there. 4) Send them to my mother. This may have been a better plan when I'd heard East Detroit High, where I went to school, had been adopted by Johns Hopkins University for some pilot program and my daugther wants to be a doctor.,,so... anyway, since then, I've found out the school is chronically underperforming and is threatened with state take over, This still may be an option. Michigan is Betsy DeVos' home turf. We have school of choice options, so my kids could attend nicer schools in the better suburbs. I'm not sure how that works. Then I wouldn't see them for six years. 5) Move to a different country that needs EFL teachers and doesn't care that I don't have a teaching degree, 6) Return to the US and wear a paper hat and flip burgers or do something similar for six years. Well, actually, my wife has this plan where we find host families and put rich Chinese kids into private schools. She thinks it'd be easy to find people, I'm not so sure. Would you like fries with that?

Voltaire 5,276 Posted June 2, 2018 Volty, if you want to come to California I could put you to work. You rent entertainment equipment for parties and such as I recall. All options are still on the table. Come September, my oldest daughter will be entering fifth grade, my son entering fourth. Although my son is more clever than his sister, he's the one that's getting chewed up and spit out by the Chinese system. He's easily distracted and takes forever to do his homework. At least twice a week, my wife berates him for being slow to finish his homework. A lot of screaming and crying. I wouldn't mind my daughter going into seventh grade, but my son, his head will explode. I also hate to give up what we've built over here. The school has grown well, we don't hardly ever lose students. Over a hundred now. maybe 110 or so. Getting the kids out of China and stateside has it's own other benefits as well. Benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Voltaire 5,276 Posted June 2, 2018 yah that but thats not a job that can feed a family around here, however if you ever wanted to get into the green industry let me know Thanks for thinking about me. It's great. Maybe I'll take you up on it. I like what I do and I'm good at it and if it were just me, could keep doing this forever. I'm pretty happy over here, until the last couple of years, I'd never thought of coming back. The problem is it's not just me. My son ... damn... I've talked about him here before, My son isn't behind, he's smart and gets A/B grades but he's too easily distracted. His one hour of homework takes three- and since I can't read it, I can't help him with it. And that's just primary school. He's in third grade, his sister in fourth. The schooling becomes absolutely brutal out here come 7-12th grade. The high school lets out daily weekdsays at 8:30 PM plus Saturday until 3. Presumably like most of you, I had six classes each semester through junior high and high school, these kids have fifteen. And the school year is much longer, it goes deep into June. Granted, if they endure the grind, they do get good results in college (speaking academically only). I rely on my wife for help, but my wife's 'help' isn't very helpful. She's short tempered, overbearing and is easily set off. She blows a brain circuit and my kids take the brunt of it, 90% of the time it's the boy. Poor kid. My son's life sucks. He doesn't much play. His mother regularly blows up at him. I'd rather my kids go to middle/high school in the US.

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted June 2, 2018 Thanks for thinking about me. Have you considered taking your wife out of the homework detail? I know what Chinese teachers make. I gotta think it wouldnt cost too much to hire one to be a tutor, help with homework and such. I bet ¥1k a month would get it done. Thats like a third of their normal salary. Might go a long way to establishing some domestic tranquillity.

This sounds like far too much academic pressure. Im all for challenging them and holding them accountable to make good grades, but a kids youth is gone in the blink of an eye. There will be plenty of time for them to be serious when they become adults. Considering a move back or the states is very reasonable based on the situation you describe. titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted June 2, 2018 38.5 - James K. Polk To finish out my POTUS category, I will take the second of three Tennessee presidents. Ive always felt that Polk was an underrated president. After Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase (also on my team) Polk oversaw the largest land expansion in US history acquiring, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, California, and parts of other states. From sea to shining sea became a reality. Manifest destiny complete.

The school I will be at next year, and my fiancée works at now, is a boarding school. The kids wake up every weekday at 6am. Wash up and eat breakfast. They then go to class until 11:30. After three hours for lunch and nap time, they go back to class, which ends at 5:00. They then eat dinner. They then stay and do homework in the classroom under teacher supervision until 8:00 pm. Lights out is at 9:00. They get one hour a day of free time. Thats it.

RaiderHaters Revenge 4,286 Posted June 2, 2018 38.07 H.H Holmes - Criminal Herman Webster Mudgett (May 16, 1861 – May 7, 1896), better known as Dr. Henry Howard Holmes or more commonly known as H. H. Holmes, was an American serial killer of the 19th century.[3] While he confessed to 27 murders,[4] only nine could be plausibly confirmed and several of the people whom he claimed to have murdered were still alive. He is commonly said to have killed as many as 200, though this figure is only traceable to 1940s pulp magazines.[5] Many victims were said to have been killed in a mixed-use building which he owned, located about 3 miles (5 km) west of the 1893 World's Fair: Columbian Exposition, supposedly called the World's Fair Hotel (informally called "The Murder Hotel"), though evidence suggests that the hotel portion was never truly open for business.[5] Besides being a serial killer, Holmes was also a con artist and a bigamist, the subject of more than 50 lawsuits in Chicago alone. Many now-common stories of his crimes sprang from fictional accounts that later authors took for fact; however, in a 2017 biography, Adam Selzer wrote that Holmes' story is "effectively a new American tall tale – and, like all the best tall tales, it sprang from a kernel of truth".[5] H. H. Holmes was executed on May 7, 1896, nine days before his 35th birthday, for the murder of his friend and accomplice Benjamin Pitezel. During his trial for the murder of Pitezel, Holmes confessed to numerous other killings.[6]

To contrast: My kids (8&10) wake at 7, eat breakfast while watching tv, clean up, brush their teeth and start school at 8. Theyre out at 3:15. At most, theyll have a half hour of homework. We also have them read for at least a half hour every night. My oldest reads much more. This all happens Sept thru the 1st week of June. The rest of their ample free time is spent doing chores, playing with the dog, playing with their friends, playing baseball, football and basketball, playing video games, watching movies, riding bikes and hover boards, camping in the back yard, going to the beach, building forts, sledding and having snowball fights. You know, kid stuff.
Voltaire 5,276 Posted June 2, 2018 I'd not wanted to take another hockey player for a good long time. The Gretzky thing and then recently the Martin Brodeur picks didn't set well with me. I'm picking guys that put on the red, white and blue and play for team USA internationally and these guys are Team Canada players with incidental US citizenship. So I'm wondering just how deep a hole does this go? Not Gordie Howe, not Bobby Orr... but the next guy I looked at, "oh I can't leave him sitting there" ... 38.8 - Mario Lemieux - Hockey

RaiderHaters Revenge 4,286 Posted June 2, 2018 39.2 John Harvard - Educator Two years before Harvard's death the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony—desiring to "advance learning and perpetuate it to posterity: dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches, when our present ministers shall lie in the dust"—appropriated £400 toward a "schoale or colledge"[3] at what was then called Newtowne.[11] In an oral will spoken to his wife[12] the childless Harvard, who had inherited considerable sums from his father, mother, and brother,[13] bequeathed to the school £780—half of his monetary estate—with the remainder to his wife;[4] perhaps more importantly[14] he also gave his scholar's library comprising some 329 titles (totaling 400 volumes, some titles being multivolume works).[15]:192 In gratitude, it was subsequently ordered "that the Colledge agreed upon formerly to bee built at Cambridg shalbee called Harvard Colledge." [3] (Even before Harvard's death, Newtowne had been renamed[3] Cambridge, after the English university attended by many early colonists, including Harvard himself.) ZeroTolerance 584 Posted June 2, 2018 How is Canadian hockey player Mario Lemieux a valid pick ? I'm asking because if Canadian born players that played on Merican teams that opens a slew of options I see no dual citizenship for Super Mario on Wiki. From Wiki: Lemieux has opened his home to young Penguins stars such as Marc-André Fleury and Sidney Crosby until they settled into the Pittsburgh area, as he did with Jaromír Jágr following the 1990 NHL Draft when he lived in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He is a naturalized American citizen[54] and on March 30, 2007, Lemieux, a registered Republican,[55] contributed $2,300 to Democratic US Senator Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign fund. In the past, he has also made contributions to the re-election fund of Republican former US Senator Rick Santorum.[56]
