5-Points 2,729 Posted May 18, 2018 15.8 Wild Bill Hickok - Old West In 1867, Hickok reportedly was involved in a dispute with drunken cowboys inside a saloon in Jefferson County, Nebraska. One of them pushed him, causing him to drop his drink. Hickok struck the man, and four of his friends rose with guns drawn. Hickok persuaded the men to step outside where he faced all four at 15 paces, or about 40 feet (12 m). The bartender counted down and Hickok killed three of the men with a bullet to the head and wounded the fourth with a shot through the cheek bone. Hickok was wounded in the shoulder. 16.1 Bass Reeves - African American Bass Reeves (July 1838 – 12 January 1910) was the first black deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi River. He worked mostly in Arkansas and the Oklahoma Territory. During his long career, he was credited with arresting more than 3,000 felons. He shot and killed 14 outlaws in self-defense. Reeves and his family farmed until 1875, when Isaac Parker was appointed federal judge for the Indian Territory. Parker appointed James F. Fagan as U.S. marshal, directing him to hire 200 deputy U.S. marshals. Fagan had heard about Reeves, who knew the Indian Territory and could speak several Indian languages.[8] He recruited him as a deputy; Reeves was the first black deputy to serve west of the Mississippi River.[5][8] Reeves was initially assigned as a deputy U.S. marshal for the Western District of Arkansas, which had responsibility also for the Indian Territory.[9] He served there until 1893. That year he transferred to the Eastern District of Texas in Paris, Texas, for a short while. In 1897, he was transferred again, serving at the Muskogee Federal Court in the Indian Territory.[9] Reeves worked for 32 years as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, and became one of Judge Parker's most valued deputies. Reeves brought in some of the most dangerous criminals of the time, but was never wounded, despite having his hat and belt shot off on separate occasions. Voltaire 4,560 Posted May 19, 2018 While we're at it. My next pick is also controversial. I'm looking at taking either Gordie Howe or Chris Chelios here. Both had careers that lasted forever. I think Howe is the better player. For what it's worth, since Howe is Canadian, I don't think he should count. That's why I'm looking at Chelios instead. (I'm still wrapping my head around Wayne Gretzky as an American since he grew up Canadian and played for Canada in all international competitions .. but anyway.) Voltaire 4,560 Posted May 19, 2018 As to 1, the issue is more complex than the man and the company. Does Disney mean just Disney, or all parent and subsidiaries, ABC, Dreamworks, Lucasworks, etc? Since I'm recusing myself, I think I'll just STFU and throw it in everybody else's hands. If it gets picked apart too much, I may throw the fish back in the pond.
