So I read the article. It didn’t say camping is racist. It said the expense of camping excludes minorities. It would probably be more accurate to say the expense excludes lower income people, who are disproportionately black.

I’m not surprised it triggered a multi page thread here tho.

It's all my family did when I was a kid. My parents had 8 kids. My dad bought a pop up camper and a tent, and for years camping was our vacation in the summer. Always the camping version of the Vacation movies. It was awesome.

It was sort of a dopey lib article that conflated being poor w being black and made the faulty assumption that the cost of camping is prohibitive. It didn’t say camping itself is racist tho.

I agree completely.  I mean, if the author truly was writing a piece about black people camping, it would have been along the lines of, 'hey, let's get more black people active in the camping experience... here's how to do it'.  But they didn't.  It clearly called out that the government (white people), prohibited black people (75 years ago!!), from going to federal parks.

Not sure what article you read, but the one I read had this as the next paragraph:

They're speculating at what caused the increase in donations.   Floyd happened in May, Arbery in February, and Taylor (which isn't racism/excessive force), happened in March.  So the sudden increases happened more than 2 months after these incidents... not immediately afterwards?  This is more of race baiting than anything.

And this money was not for recreational camping but to house protesters as they took over cities like Seattle. It was money for the protests it had nothing to do with camping. This stuff will never be used for recreational camping.
