bostonlager 2,664 Posted May 1, 2022 Proposed rules for voting 1. Polls will be public and you cannot vote for yourself or use any aliases. 2. First poll will be posted on Tuesday of this week and remain open for exactly 1 week. 3. The top 3 and ties will make it to the final round the following Tuesday where once again a poll will be started and open for 1 week. I'm playing golf today so I won't be on, but if you think of anything else let me know.
Voltaire 5,285 Posted May 1, 2022 I'd as soon post round one immediately and then post round two whenever the first round falls off the front page. But it's your prerogative. Tuesday and a week from Tuesday works as well.

As I mentioned, I plan to do a write up critique of my draft and overall, after the voting. In there I would mention the surprising misses, overall commentary. Again, @bostonlager I'll do my writeup now. Bunny talks about the concerts he went to and stories and such. I went to zero. Being a broke teenager, I didn't have a car/car radio, I never went to to a single concerts, and I didn't have a lot of albums. I wasn't yet into metal bands nor ones that played with a lot of Satanic imagery. That came soon after in the Army. I graduated in June '89, left home in August, off to Germany with a visit to the Gulf War sandwiched in, came back in 1992 and just hated where the tectonic shifting plates were taking the music scene. I did watch a ton of MTV though, and this is a heavily MTV influenced draft. I wanted to get top songs by top bands and signature songs from other ones as I could squeeze in. The strategy going in was to get as many top songs that people knew by top acts and try to supplement it with signature songs by other bands. I also was cognizant of issues surrounding availability to find good songs in 80, 81, and 82. I didn't want to go 1st overall because there were like a dozen songs I could have taken. Later on, at the 2/3 corner I was pretty stoked as to what was still available to me. So, at that time, I felt #1 really was a blessing. I hadn't been happy being #1 but when I realized what was still there at 2/3, I did feel lucky after all. I just figured #1 overall don't screw up. My favorite band, Guns N Roses, was hugely popular and I took their most critically acclaimed song. It's not my favorite song by them, it's #2 or 3, I like Paradise City the best and took that in the 9th round. 1.1 "Welcome to the Jungle" Guns 'N Roses The first and second rounds came and went and a lot of the best songs from the problem years of the early 80s were taken. These songs weren't the best by those groups, but they were among the best for those years. Particularly, three of 1981's best songs IMO went before I got another crack at them. That was going to be a tough spot to fill. I went over the albums for those years and I was just homed in on Ozzy Osbourne who'd put out albums in each of those first three years. At first, my intention was to take Crazy Train here. but I wasn't sure if Ozzy was included in the draft options or or not. Then I got to thinking how, since I was limited to two Ozzy songs, I was going to have to take somebody else in one of those first three years. So, I went back to the strategy for 1.1 and took two songs from top acts that I may well have taken 1.1. 2.7 Bon Jovi "Livin on a Prayer" 3.1 Def Leppard "Photograph" The draft went and came back. Since Ozzy was confirmed to be re-instated, I knew that I would take two of his songs. This was going to be the vehicle to get me out of two of the three problem years. The best non-Ozzy song from those three years was "Fool For your Loving" by Whitesnake. So I gave it some thought. It's just not a song that does much for me. taking it would mean not taking Crazy Train and Crazy Train was way better than anything on Diary, the weakest of the three albums IMO. 1981 was bugging the piss out of me. Four people had 81 picks by now, I figured I could take a 2nd song off the Van Halen, Dokken, Motley Crue or Def Leppard Album. Those plus Ozzy's Diary album were available. Choosing "Crazy Train" for 1980 meant that I was writing off Diary because I was limited to two Ozzy songs and I'd already decided that 1982 was going to be off of "Speak" The 1980, 81, 82 strategy gelled at this point. two Ozzy plus something else. I'd take Crazy Train here for 1980. If anyone snags Paranoid or Iron Man for 1982, immediately grab the other one. If I miss the other one, War Pigs or I Don't Know would be a late draft safety valve. With '81 my thinking at the time was that I was screwed anyway, it can just focking fall. Later on, when I'd figured I'd have to make up my mind on 81, I gave the Van Halen, Motley Crue and Dokken 81 albums a good listen. I'd already had two Def Leppard songs by then and so High and Dry was out. I'd form a definite preference for Van Halen's Unchained. This would turn out to be the one I really wanted, much better than the rest. But at this time they were all just names, I wasn't really familiar with any of them, I didn't have any emotional connection to the songs and I decided '81 could get focked and it would be Mr. Irrelevant. My favorite Scorpions song which was also the band's signature song was still there, that was an easy choice. 4.7 Scorpions "Rock You Like a Hurricane" 5.1 Ozzy Osbourne "Crazy Train" By this time the songs were just falling into place effortlessly. I had taken my favorite songs, including one that filled out the tough1980 slot, and they just aligned by year without issue. Meanwhile, four 1982s songs had been taken, all mediocre, none from Speak. I was thrilled whenever an 82 song fell! With both Paranoid and Iron Man still available, I could just let 1982 keep falling and keep my focus elsewhere. I'd still felt I was hosed for 81 and was going to take it last. So I just kept hitting songs I liked best by top artists that hadn't been picked yet and got another year for free and my first wildcard. I'd gone for critical acclaim for G'nR and Def Leppard rather than my own personal favorites and that kind of bugged me at this point. In the end, I'd wind up getting both of my favorite songs from them anyway. This is where I made my first potential mistake tough. I hadn't paid hardly any attention to years. Hadn't had to, they were filling themselves in. At the time I'd only recognized 80, 81, and 82 as teh years the only years needing special attention. If I'd known at the time that 1985 was a down year year, one of these picks may well would have been "Ratt's Lay it Down." But that song wasn't anywhere on my mind. To this point, I was in the habit of only hitting stuff I loved more than anything else. 80 was in the books, 82 I had a plan, 81 no, the years were taking care of themselves. 85, I didn't see coming. 6.7 Queensryche "Silent Lucidity" 7.1 Poison "Every Rose has it's Thorn" By now, Guns 'N Roses was getting hit hard but they'd not yet taken my favorite song. I'd been putting it off, I couldn't handle seeing my favorite song in the whole draft out there any more so I took it. I'd felt dirty for letting Paradise City fall this far but it worked out. Meanwhile, Motley Crue had also been getting hammered. They don't have a signature song, they have a ton of great one, so I felt I could let them slide and get something nice later. The entire time, my two favorites had been out there, but when Kickstart My Heart fell, it kickstarted my ass in gear to take the other one. 8.7 Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood 9.2 Guns 'N Roses - Paradise City I was happy to watch two Ozzy songs from Diary fall for 1981. I would have taken one, but I was limited to two Ozzy songs and already had one. Meanwhile I had already decided that the other would be for 1982. So Diary was going to be off limits. If Paranoid or Iron Man had fallen, I'd snag the other. Since both were still there, great I felt I could put off my Ozzy 82 selection for yet another corner. Meanwhile, these Ozzy 81 songs were doing me another favor. I still had the whole catalog of what I was considering for 1981 in the 4th round still available to me from round 12 forward. I hadn't taken a close look yet but glad they were all there. So everything was turning up peachy. I could put off both 81 and 82. It was around here, BHB told me that 85 was a problem year. I saw all but one other person had an 85 song. None were terribly great, but I had missed out on them. That's when I took the year seriously, I put together three songs I'd liked: David Lee Roth, Heart, and Motley Crue. It occurred to me that I had Motley Crue on the short list as a backup to both 81 and 85. 10.7 was another of my favorite songs dropping. Photograph was Def Leppard's most prominent song, but my favorite song was Pour Some Sugar on Me. Now I had both my favorite song and most prominent songs from my three favorite bands in the draft. Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer" serving double duty and I'd get my second favorite Bon Jovi song later. The other song was a band that had slipped and my pick triggered a run. Taking Def Leppard here blocked me from using them as an option for 81 but I had already decided which 81 song to take and it wasn't High and Dry which #2. I had spent a good bit of time going over the 1981 options by now and one song stood out, I wanted Unchained quite badly now. I figured with me being the only one with an 81 opening, nobody would be looking at that bullsh*t year, I was in the clear and safe to leave Unchained out there and keep hitting the top bands of songs I knew and loved. 10.7 Def Leppard "Pour Some Sugar on Me" 11.1 Skid Row "18 & Life" At this point I had five picks left: two wildcards, 2+ 1982 songs I loved from an untouched album that had slipped through the cracks, one single song from 81 with no backup that I felt was on nobody's radar, plus three similar option from 85 songs. The safe thing to do would have been to hit 81 and 82. But I really, really felt that Unchained was safe. People didn't need / weren't drafting '81, they weren't drafting Van Halen, and if they did draft early Van Halen, they were likely to take Runnin' With the Devil, or at least I would have. I'd lost my backup option for 81 when I took my 2nd Def Leppard song but I still felt Unchained could sit. I wanted to take another Bon Jovi song but didn't want to risk a Bon Jovi run costing me my 2nd favorite. Also, I did have a favorite between Paranoid and Iron Man. 12.7 Bon Jovi - "Wanted Dead or Alive" 13.1 Ozzy Osbourne - "Paranoid" When High & Dry fell, I felt glum. It was no longer Plan B for 1981 mind you, I'd locked up Def Leppard the corner before last. I just didn't think anyone was looking at 1981 and so it hit close to home. It was going to be Unchained or totally screwed. So many other options for my final Wild Card. I doubled down on Van Halen on my final corner. 14.7 Van Halen - Unchained 15.1 Van Halen - Jump I still had the same three 1985 songs to choose from when had first became aware that 1985 was quietly a problem year. And all the songs I considered then were still available at the end of the draft. Heart's "These Dreams", Motley Crue's "Smoking in the Boy's Room," and David Lee Roth's "California Girls." I couldn't decide so I put Mr. Irrelevant up for a vote in the Geek Club and by 4-2-2 the vote was" 16.7 Heart - "What About Love" I liked that one the best too as I was one of the Heart voters. It's the only song in the draft with female lead vocals but I had been hesitant to pull the trigger due to gender discrimination. I love all my songs, my gambles all paid off, it all turned out as well as I could have expected.

Photograph was Def Leppard's most prominant song, but my favorite song was Pour Some Sugar on Me. Now I had my bot favorite song and most prominant songs from my three favoirte bands in the draft. Great read and thanks and we had very similar strategies, I got to get the two GnR ballads I thought were the best. Also had to watch I didn't load up on to many ballad songs since I like many of them. I also thought got to fill up all the years with the best song in that year and after it will be more fun just having the wildcards left and many options. Turns out it wasn't cause it was less challenging and so many to chose from and pick one you really like but have to leave many more out there as well. It was fun and a blast and thank you all! Ps. think you had a great draft Volt.

Herbivore 1,123 Posted May 5, 2022 My writeup. I won't go as in depth as Volty. Overall..we should have started in 81. There is no Hair Metal in 80. There were many bands on those lists that I don't consider Hair Metal. The Scorpions. Queensryche. Van Halen, Tesla. Its fine that these were picked, and the songs picked fit closest to the genre, or tough year fill. I just wanted a more hair band line up. I love Ozzy, but only really consider Shot in the Dark hair band style. My 80 Ozzy pick was a dead year plug. 81 was a mistake. I planned to take Piece of Your Action by Motley Crue, but maxxed out the Crue by taking Girls, Girls, Girls. I think I thought you could take 3. For picks, #1..Here I Go Again is a no brainer. 36 yrs old and it still kills #2..Round and Round. Ratt was one my favorite bands in this style. I mostly liked heavier stuff, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Anthrax. But all the Ratt stuff was good. Took Back for More later. Check out the ep version. 83 has some hair band bangers, I went with maybe the first I heard on Feel the Noise..Ha. Pick 4..with respect to the Crue, I think I have the most hair band song from 89. House of Pain by Faster Pussycat is a great song. From here I fill out some years adding hair band signatures, Poison, Twisted Sister, Guns n Roses. My random Wildcards were Summertime Girls by Y&T, and Never Change Your Mind by Loudness. Summertime Girls was huge that year. I wondered if this was on anyones radar. Never Change Your Mind is a personal favorite. That whole album was fun. Back to overall, we hit, pretty much, all of the big bands. I thought Ballad of Jayne by LA Guns would get picked though. It was tight, but I picked BeenHereBefore. His list from 83 on is one Hair Band monster after another, save the curious Poison Rock n Roll All Nite. Is that their song or a cover? Well done Gents! Good post too and was tempted to take Summertime Girls for 1985 year and me and my cousin were big fans of the band back then. Also was tempted to take Ballad of Jayne with my last pick. The poison song is the Kiss cover and picked it to see if anyone would remember them doing it on The Less Then Zero soundtrack.

I'd have taken it as Kiss since they are eligible and that's their signature song which they close every show with (I think).
