Dahmer made 3 years and 4 months in prison, so let's make that the over/under.

Though a suspect has been arrested and charged in the brutal stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students in the middle of the night last fall, a series of mysteries remain about why the victims were targeted and what evidence prosecutors have against the suspect.

Now the suspect, Bryan Kohberger, 28, who was a Ph.D. student in criminology at a nearby university at the time, has offered an explanation for what he was doing on the night of the killings. In a court filing this week, his lawyers suggested that he was out “driving alone” around the time that the attack occurred, in the pre-dawn hours of Nov. 13.

“Mr. Kohberger has long had a habit of going for drives alone,” they wrote.

Investigators have said that they used cellphone tower data to track Mr. Kohberger’s phone on the night of the killings, and obtained surveillance video that showed a white vehicle like Mr. Kohberger’s repeatedly circling around the victims’ house that night.

The defense said in its filing that Mr. Kohberger’s explanation of where he traveled that night might eventually be corroborated by witnesses and experts.

Pretty weak “alibi,” but I guess it’s all they’ve got. They must figure they cannot exclude or disprove the cell phone tracking.

Still-at-large?

Don't you love someone who starts a thread but can't be bothered to update the title in 3 years.

I am thankful the title hasn't changed.  Constantly changing it is stupid.

That's crazy this news just came out. I was just watching youtube videos on possible motives.

I found this one that I tend to agree with.

Revenge after interacting with one of the girls in a way where she rejected him or mocked him. We might never know, especially with no trial.

Yes, with there being no trial now, we'll never know anything. Sucks for the families, not that they or we would know anything anyway unless he was going to honestly testify under oath. Hopefully they still find peace.

I have not read every article posted about this trial but it always seemed to em that he was a suspect and there was never a 'publicly presumed' motive ... and it dragged on forever making me think either he was someone with connections or there was something 'those in charge' didn't want John Q to know.  Am I totally off-base here?

It dragged on because his defense attorney fought absolutely everything. She knows the evidence is overwhelming so she tried to get anything and everything thrown out of being able to be introduced in a jury trial. The last request for moving the date of the trial was denied. Then about week ago (according to today's news) she requested a deal. The prosecution spoke with the families and then offered 4 life sentences without parole and without appeals and so no trial and no death penalty.

I don't think they know his motive. May be something only he knows.

I know I am not slinging facts/links but it always seems any other case is resolved pretty quickly unless it involves someone of note (money/politics). This guy - on the surface - is a nobody.  This should have been done years ago ... unless there is more to him or the motive.

I used to think sitting in prison for life was a worse punishment than the death penalty.  But these days prison is a glorified daycare.  So I change my mind.

He took a plea deal technically. Guilty plea happens at arrainment (sp). After that it's a deal. Also the judge can refuse to accept the deal. They usually don't because they'd rather have the case taken off the docket so it's uncommon for the judge to deny it. Tomorrow the judge needs to state if he accepts the deal then comes victim statements & sentencing.

"A plea deal is an agreement where a defendant pleads guilty (or no contest) to a reduced charge or receives a lighter sentence, in exchange for avoiding a trial. A guilty plea, on the other hand, is a defendant's direct admission of guilt to the charges against them, without any negotiated concessions."

I heard it was split between the 4 families. However Larry Levine, a former inmate of 11 different prisons who has experienced it all, has said this guy has a target on his back. He won't last. It would be a trophy for the person who gives him prison justice. So it very well may be he'll still get the death sentence far before the legal death sentence would have been since it can take decades after appeals are exhausted for people to actually be executed.
