It seems that Bobby Witt took this thread's discussion about why he hadn't landed like a prospect of his caliber would be expected to land... personally.

He's .304/.336/.502 with 8 HR, 35 RBI, 21R, and 13 SB since June 1.

Those numbers climb to .327/.355/.617 with 6 HR, 23 RBI, 13 R, and 7 SB since July 1, which is around when that discussion really picked up. He also has drastically trimmed his K rate.

The June -current numbers, projected over 150 games, would look like this:

61R/23 HR/38 SB/101 RBI

July-current:

75R/34 HR/40 SB/133 RBI

Yeah. He's hot right now, but we could be seeing the superstar level unlock as we watch (maybe sometimes, if it's convenient and we're not too busy).

Two weeks later and no signs of slowing down.  I was just pulling up my homers fantasy league to see who has been hot the last week, and he's the 8th overall offensive player for our league rankings in that span at 11/27 with 3 homers, 8 runs and 8 RBIs.  He's on fire.

How bad does kc lose to the Cubs today? This is kc's best shot to win a game. Bad pitchers.

My son will sit there and watch play by play (he's 16) and yell at the TV, pump his fist when something good happens...

I'm like dude we blow.

Another homerun by BWJ today.  But our bullpen blows so we'll probably still lose even up a run in the 7th.

The tigers kinda beat up both the twins and indiguards recently.   Most seasons include a very late collapse by some team that leads to a shock ending.  Maybe the tigers start to believe in themselves the rest of the way and try to steal the division.

Thirty-eight games to go and 7.5 games out?  Yes there have been miracles, but I don't think there will be one in Detroit...

FanGraphs have them at 1.4% to win the division at the moment...

Neither the yankees or red sox look to make the playoffs this season.  Thats only happened once since the wild card was created.   2014.  You have to go back to 1993 to find another year they both missed, back when only two teams made the playoffs and met in the LCS.

Mets to retire numbers of Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry next season

NEW YORK -- Dwight Gooden's No. 16 and Darryl Strawberry's No. 18 will be retired by the New York Mets in separate pregame ceremonies next year honoring players who were keys to the team's most recent World Series title in 1986.

No word yet if they will also retire the number of their coke dealer.

Looks like Strasburg is going to "hang them up"...

https://www.mlb.com/news/stephen-strasburg-retirement-nationals

2019 World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg is planning to retire from baseball, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Thursday. The news was first reported by The Washington Post. The Nationals have a press conference tentatively scheduled for Sept. 9, according to The Post. The Nationals have not confirmed the report.

Strasburg has not pitched since June 9, 2022, when he made his only appearance of the season for Washington. He underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in 2021 and has not been able to make a full return from that procedure.

The former No. 1 overall pick is a fan-favorite for helping the Nationals to the franchise's first World Series title in 2019. He made two starts in the series against the Astros and won both of them, striking out 14 and allowing just four runs.

Strasburg signed a seven-year, $245 million deal with the Nationals after that World Series-winning season, at the time breaking the record for the highest-value contract for a pitcher. Since putting pen to paper on that deal, Strasburg pitched only 31 1/3 innings.

Over his 13-year career, all with the Nationals, Strasburg was a three-time All-Star with a 113-62 record, a 3.24 ERA and 1,723 strikeouts. When he reached 1,500 K's in 2019, he was the fastest pitcher by innings to reach that mark.

He was one of the few ballplayers that I knew of before getting to the majors.  It was just crazy watching him pitch the first few times and constantly throwing over 100 inning after inning. Guess that velocity caught up to him though. Good for him winning on title for the Nats.

Angels' Shohei Ohtani has elbow tear, won't pitch again this season

Since going 'all-in' on the season by not trading Ohtani, the Angels have gone 5-16.

I wonder how bad they would have been had they not bolstered the roster at the deadline?  🤔

They should’ve been sellers at the deadline and totally retooled the farm. I’d be shocked if he’s back .Now they’re screwed

He's a top 5 hitter and a top 10 pitcher.  The market's never seen anything like him but I doubt he gets $60M per.  At some point in time clubs need to wake up and realize the way to run your club is like the Orioles.  Smart GM, smart drafting, good player development.  Sure, you may suck for a few years but now you're looking at a decade plus of competing.

Screw paying individual players so much.  I can't think of a single example where the investment was even remotely worth it.

It seems mostly random.  I think almost every team has won their division in the 21st century. Sure feels like it.  And for all of them people were like “oh they did it right and are set for a decade” and it almost never happens.

Miami, Pittsburgh, and Colorado are the only teams that have not won their division since 2001...

The Royals and A's are officially eliminated.  At least we have one bright spot to have some optimism going into next year.  And I guess the A's can be thankful that it won't be long and they'll be out of Oakland.

One month to go, 27 games to play.

BWJ is 3 HRs away from being the first Royal ever with a 30 HR/ 30 SB season.

IF  Witt, Jr. could somehow finish with 3 more HRs and 12 more SBs, he would be only the third player in MLB history to finish a season with 30 HRs and 50 SBs, and the other two who did, Barry Bonds and Eric Davis only accomplished the feat  in one season of their respective careers.  It's hard to fathom this kid is 23 years old and only in his second MLB season.

He's averaging .288 steals per game, which would only get him to about 8 more steals for the remaining games so he needs to pick up the pace just a bit.

He has been struggling since he was traded to the Mets farm system...  He does have 52 stolen bases in 109 games at AA for the year and hitting .300...

Who knows, but the kid is only "21", so he could still be a good one...

More intrigue with the Oakland Athletics

apparently the city has raised enough cash to be within $36 million of its commitments to a new venue at Howard Terminal.  I imagine they will hit it before the deadline.  What that might mean is the Athletics will not receive enough yes votes from the other clubs to move to Vegas, as several teams would like to use Vegas as leverage to get new parks for themselves.  Or maybe its just the city of Oakland trying to save face and tell its citizens they did their part and the team left anyway.

MLB Network is such a waste at times...  They could show some games that include playoff teams, but of course they feel like showing two teams that probably have both not making the playoffs just because it is the Yankees and Red Sox...  Oh well, at least come October, both should be sitting at home...

Hey buddy, I don’t wear Reds stuff. Would you be willing to make a small donation to a dog shelter in your local area and call it even?
