I think the most frightening thing is that we won't be told much of anything until it's too late. 

China is totally surveilling us and it's so obvious. They are basically waiting until our resources are so depleted and we are so divided, that they can move on Taiwan and we will be too weak to fight them. We are sending so much to Ukraine right now, our country is divided (race, politics, orientation, you name it), and our children are being raised to "hate" their country, to disrespect the flag, the anthems (don't stand for this nation!). You raise your kids to hate their country and they won't fight for it. We are taxed to death, social programs are draining our working class, no one wants to go back to work when they can get govt assistance,...no one will fight for the US when we spend our time and money helping others. Russia isn't coming to our aide when we've given so much to Ukraine. 

China is just waiting for the perfect moment.

what i read is that the only thing that has changed is that weve upgraded our radar to sport smaller objects.  these things have been going on but were just undetectable or too hard to reliably spot with the tech we were using.

So a US general said would not rule out that it could have been an extra-terrestrial aircraft. The level of stupidity of this administration is off the charts. They simply cannot be truthful to the public. Its like they come up with any lie just so they don't tell the truth.

You would not even see the spacecraft and B. the object would have smoked the fighter jet long before it could shoot the 2nd sidewinder after the 1st one missed. That being said they are so stupid to not come out and say "don't be ridiculous. Also, we certainly would never just shoot down a spacecraft that is not showing hostile agression." they actually have polling data on the public from back then all the way to today.  back in the 1960s, the level of trust in major institutions was vastly higher than it is now.  trust in police, government, education, the military, religion, etc was much much higher.  the media had a narrative to sell back then but today things are much worse.  people trust nothing anymore.

i do not believe it is space aliens but i disagree with your reasoning.  space aliens would be the equivalent of gods to us.  they would have fantastical levels of abilities that would be the stuff of movies.  reasons could be bizarre to mundane:

1.  they are time travelers and we were supposed to shoot down alien craft at this moment in time.  if it doesnt happen, the space aliens do not exist.  
2.  they are bored and want to start world war 3 by stirring the pot and hoping we think China is spying.
3.  we shot down derelict space alien ships.
4.  their defense in that situation is to make us think we shot them down, but they actually fled.  there is no debris.
5.  their defense in that situation is to destroy their own ship by obliterating it at the atomic level so there is no trace.
6. their defense in that situation is to morph the ship into a simple airplane or something and that will be the debris we find.
