This is such a dumb internet "gotcha".   Having a book available in a library <> reading a book out loud.    So yeah, if there are younger kids at the meetings or kids it's not appropriate for, then that is a reason to not read it out loud.   Just because somebody agrees that it might not be appropriate in all contexts, doesn't mean it should be removed from the library.

People have lost their damn minds.

That said, in this particular instance where it was just adults - yeah, they should be able to read it and have a discussion about the book.   Give the parent his point and time - THEN tell him he's being dumb and stop trying to remove books.  ;)

ETA:  my reaction above was too much to do with other examples of similar I have seen with families at these meetings and the dumb 'gotcha' because they cut them off from reading something.

The Black Stallion, but it's not the one written by Walter Farley in 1941.  :shocking:

I guess I will just never understand the right's obsession about what books are in a freakin' library, or how they can't explain why they just can't not read them and go on with their lives.

The school board appears to have a process in place for parents who don't like school books, and that is to go to the superintendent, not read the book at the school board.

But every parent wants to be an internet star and show that they are standing up for the kids.  Talk about virtue signaling.

Is there anything that shouldn’t be in a school library?

Thanks for the explanation.  That seems like a dumb can of worms to open up, too if we are talking about what is in a library.   In the classroom or as a recommended assignment from a teacher?  Of course.

Agree on the bolded - like I said, this seems to have become a dumb trend and an internet "gotcha".

God, this again?   Yes, Hustler should not be at a school library.

We don't need to clog this up with more of our back and forth.   We don't agree on this topic and we don't agree that removal of most of these books is rational.    I basically never agree with the books I see as being challenged and usually won't agree the solution is taking them off the shelves.   The solution is transparency and for people who choose not to read them to continue to do so.

What’s the back and forth? You said people have lost their minds when referring to this video. Do you think the subject matter he was able to read belongs in a school library?

I find it hilarious that all these doosh bags with throw hissy fits about books in school libraries, meanwhile kids don't gets books from the library anymore, and all this sh1t and much worse is available in every kids pocket.

But sure, let's keep telling school boards what good parents we are that we want this filth out of our kids libraries.

Just because you were dumb enough to give a fourth grader a smart phone, don’t think everyone else is.

When considering content for a publicly funded school, you have to address specific reasoning to fund that content.  You’re  concentrating on reasons to not remove it because you think the content is no big deal.  What’s the specific reason to have this content in the first place?

Our usual back and forth about context, taking books as a whole, and largely just avoiding stuff you don't like.   You know, the same things we've said to each other multiple times in our short relationship.

I will say that, and you will focus on a couple sentences and accuse me of wanting porn in libraries and being a groomer.

That sound familiar and about right?

No.  I may have asked if porn is ok to make a broader point, but I don’t think you believe it belongs there.

What age are you planning on giving your kids phones?  What about use of a home computer?

So you have no problem with bibles in school libraries?

If I was a member of any of these school boards I would be terrified of parents at this point. Some of these parents have made terrorist like threats. The FBI has tried to investigate some of these but now Republicans in Congress are trying to stop that.

When my daughter was young we used to go to the Orlando Public Library every week to pick out new books from the children's section.

Most of them were normal, but occasionally I'd come across titles like "Why Sally Has Two Dads" and "Muhammad's Ramadan Vacation" and "Bill Likes Boys".  The all inclusive world in the children's section is weird.

If the books are not appropriate to be read out loud, why the f are we using taxpayers dollars to put inappropriate material to children?   These are school libraries for children.  When the he11 is it appropriate to have a book which teaches children how to send pornographic pictures.  The left view of freedom of speech has become so backwards.

They use computers now, with supervision. The thought among some people I have read  is not till 16. We’ll see about that, depending on how they mature.  But middle school is not happening. I don’t know anyone that did that.  They can have a flip phone to stay in touch and use the I pad at home for limited and monitored social media.

Nobody should have a problem with that. I would think, though I don’t know, that most public school libraries have a Bible.

I don't think there has to be a reason much more than an attempt to get books that would appeal to the wide range of kids you have coming through your school system.    You have to account for a variety of reading levels and in a HS anything from 14yos to 18 year olds checking out materials.    Not an easy task to get books for that range of kids.

Like I said, I don't understand why the solution for these parents is not to just worry about their kids, but to remove books so that nobody's kids can read something, just because they find it evil or offensive.   Yes, some of these books that show up on these lists are 100% acceptable for a HS senior, but maybe not for somebody else's 14 year old Freshman a HS library needs to keep both in mind.

Maybe some crazy lefties should start showing up at school board meetings and reading inappropriate passages out of the Bible out of context?  ;)

Can you imagine how the right would freak out?

But of course that wouldn’t happen because most people on the liberal side don’t believe in any kind of censorship.
