School Board Pres Tries To Shut Down Dad Reading Aloud Book From School Library

Nobody should have a problem with that. I would think, though I don’t know, that most public school libraries have a Bible.

I guarantee there are people who will defend age inappropriate books in an elementary school library who would lose their sh!t if they found out there was a Bible in there somewhere.

If the books are not appropriate to be read out loud, why the f are we using taxpayers dollars to put inappropriate material to children?   These are school libraries for children.  When the he11 is it appropriate to have a book which teaches children how to send pornographic pictures.  The left view of freedom of speech has become so backwards.

I just addressed that - It should be OK to have him read it outloud when it was just the adults.    I understand if part of the reason they cut him off is it's a new trend now and he is probably no the first (and as gutter pointed out, this is probably also not how they are asking parents to address this).

The examples I've seen before this with that same question has been with an open forum, and there have been very young kids in the room.   Like I said above, I could say something is OK for a HS library but not OK to read aloud to an elementary student.

Can you present some evidence of this? As I wrote I think most school libraries have Bibles now. (Some have Korans as well.)

Dude, you can find somebody on the internet who believes damn near anything we can think of.  Who cares?

My point is those people shouldn't try to remove The Bible for other folks any more than those folks should try to remove the lists of books they are trying to from libraries.

Here you go

ALA,  provides an annual list of books “challenged” as being inappropriate for library readers, according to the Daily Jot.

This year the Bible, the most widely distributed and best selling book ever, ranked 6th on the challenged list compiled from libraries, schools, and media reports on attempts to ban books in communities across the country.

MY level of indifference matters not.   I just try not to tell others how to parent and what to read, that's more my point.

It's not as though I let my kids read and watch whatever they want.   I have my lines, I just acknowledge they are MY lines, and let others have their lines - and ask they return the courtesy.

your example is a Christian website that is paranoid about the Bible being removed?

Do you have any evidence to the contrary?

Only the fact that it hasn’t been removed. That’s pretty good evidence don’t you think?

I wouldn't know. I don't hang out in elementary school libraries.

Didn't take long for Timmy to come in here and tell you how terrible republicans are.   Whew...if we go a day without that, I would worry

I guess I will just never understand the right's obsession about what books are in a freakin' library, or how they can't explain why they just can't not read them and go on with their lives.

Porn?  If not, soft porn? How about National Geographic?

Is Anchorage a lib area now?

Also, the dumbest part about this is it took them 5 minutes to decide if he could keep going when they could have just let him finish and be done with it.

But I didn’t get the impression the dude was offended by the content or anything, just that the point was received and he made him aware of the proper channels to take his complaint.

I wonder if some of that is just not setting the example that showing up and doing that was OK.

Our usual back and forth about context, taking books as a whole, and largely just avoiding stuff you don't like.   You know, the same things we've said to each other multiple times in our short relationship.

I will say that, and you will focus on a couple sentences and accuse me of wanting porn in libraries and being a groomer.

That sound familiar and about right?

maybe stuff we don't like is inappropriate for grade school kids.   maybe stuff you think is appropriate is not.

your sandbox, your call.  have at it & good luck.

I'm taking the sensible, safe path and it is not WOKE.  it is common sense.

After this post I am not sure what this sensible, safe path is you are speaking of.   Not sure what you mean by the bolded.

I think the battle is who gets to decide these things and how are they deciding them.   I understand my line in the sand is farther than some, but I don't think I am being unreasonable either.  Also, often I don't KNOW if it's appropriate or not, and that is part of the point.  IMO it is stupid to make that decision on out of context pages of a book.  I have read many of the books on the challenge/bannned lists, and think most are fine to be on shelves in a school, especially when we are talking about a HS and not an elementary school, which we often are.

What's going on in some of these areas and schools is lists of books are being pulled for "further review".  Mostly the reasons are for "sexual content".    I would guess things like The Bible will be returned to the shelves.  Just not anything lgbtq related.  ;)

These school boards are like a Kangaroo Court.  It is frightening to actually see these people in action.

No wonder private school enrollment is soaring right now.

Oh please.  Libtards are doing this as well, only their’s is far more stupid.  Dr. Seuss, Huckleberry Finn, Of Mice and Men… just to name a few.

Very fair point - thanks.   I focus too much on the sex part, and not enough on the rewriting Dahl books.    It's all freakin' stupid, and the left is contributing to this as well.

Leftists - the Bible should be removed from public school libraries. Also leftists, why do you want to ban books for 3rd graders depicting 2 pre-pubescent boys blowing each other?

This is such a dumb internet "gotcha".   Having a book available in a library <> reading a book out loud.    So yeah, if there are younger kids at the meetings or kids it's not appropriate for, then that is a reason to not read it out loud.   Just because somebody agrees that it might not be appropriate in all contexts, doesn't mean it should be removed from the library.

People have lost their damn minds.

You either ignorantly or strategically omitted the word SCHOOL before Library. In movies we have ratings system.  E for everyone, PG, PG-13, R and TV-MA.  It 100% makes logical sense that books in either Elementary, Middle School or High School follow similar protocols in their respective libraries based on age and maturity.

That is not banning books from a focking book store or Amazon.  This is 100% logical and common sense.

Of course, and I have agreed as much.   Most of the time the examples I see are of HIGH SCHOOL libraries and books getting taken from there.

Come on man, I am not advocating for books to be allowed at all 3, no questions asked or something stupid - that's you guys putting words in my mouth or not reading my posts.

I have had many posts on this topic in these last few months, which was what I was referring to.

I get it, I push back on the hyperbole, and I have a longer leash than some with the "sexual content" stuff so I get framed as though I am a crazy lefty on this topic, which isn't the case.   I get worked up about the dumb banning/censorship angle and sometimes get caught on examples that should be banned.

I am ok with a "rating" system (anybody who knows about the movie ratings knows how random and dumb this process is too, though) similar to film.  That at least helps parents know what might be in a book, and it's much better than taking a book off the shelf.

edjr posted this here thread only 7 hours ago.  Who the fock do you think we are?  I don't know or care WTF you posted six months ago.  JFC.

What you posted TODAY was dumb as hell, just own it and move on.

Books like what the father read aloud have no business in schools.  If parents wants to give them those books fine, if a person seeks it out on their own fine, but in a public school the real question is.....why would anyone PUSH for that?  Root cause, deep dive the why there Mr. Swope.
