Trump Vows To Stay In Race Even If Convicted Of Crimes: ‘I’ll Never Leave’

....Former President Donald Trump vowed over the weekend that he will “never” drop out of the 2024 presidential race even if he is convicted on any of the criminal charges that he faces in multiple investigations.....Trump’s remarks come after a federal grand jury in the Southern District of Florida returned a 49-page indictment against the former president, charging him with 37 criminal counts, with 31 of those being the willful retention of national defense information. Other counts include conspiracy to obstruct justice, corruptly concealing documents or records, and making false statements.

“I’ll never leave,” Trump told POLITICO in an interview. “Look, if I would have left, I would have left prior to the original race in 2016. That was a rough one. In theory that was not doable.”

Trump said that he believes he will not be convicted and does not plan on taking a plea deal, but seemed to believe that he might get a deal “where they pay me some damages.”....No trial date has been set, but the case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who Trump appointed to the Southern District of Florida bench in 2020. Trump is scheduled to appear before Cannon on Tuesday....Special Counsel Jack Smith said during a press conference on Friday that the former president will get “a speedy trial on this matter, consistent with the public interest and the rights of the accused.”

.....Even with a speedy trial, Trump’s unprecedented legal challenges are sure to affect his bid for another term in the White House. He also faces a trial in New York, where the Manhattan district attorney has secured an indictment against him for allegedly falsifying business records. He also faces a separate federal criminal investigation from Smith over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and he faces a criminal investigation in Georgia over the same matter.....

Trump vows to stay in the race even if convicted

....Trump is not legally prohibited from running for president from prison or as a convicted felon. But such a bid would nevertheless provide a massive stress test for the country’s political and legal systems....The former president leveled harsh criticisms at special counsel Jack Smith and argued that the case against him was politically motivated and flimsy. “These are thugs and degenerates who are after me,” he said....

Trump predicted he would not be convicted and said he did not anticipate taking a plea deal, though he left open the possibility of doing so “where they pay me some damages.” He sidestepped the possibility that he would pardon himself should he win the presidency in 2024. “I don’t think I’ll ever have to,” Trump said. “I didn’t do anything wrong.” While Trump said campaign fundraising had skyrocketed since the indictment was issued, he conceded it was an unwelcome development.....

“Nobody wants to be indicted,” said Trump. “I don’t care that my poll numbers went up by a lot. I don’t want to be indicted. I’ve never been indicted. I went through my whole life, now I get indicted every two months. It’s been political.”

He repeatedly invoked the Presidential Records Act to assert he’d done nothing wrong, a vigorously disputed interpretation of law that Trump has offered before....Trump’s remarks came as he flew between speeches to Republicans in Georgia and North Carolina. The trip came one day after Smith unsealed a 37-count indictment against Trump, including accusations of violating the Espionage Act, retention of classified documents and obstruction of justice. Trump is set to appear in court Tuesday in Miami. Trump’s personal valet, Waltine Nauta, was also charged. Nauta was seen traveling with Trump on Saturday, and the aide followed Trump out of his SUV upon arriving at the Newark, N.J., Airport en route to Georgia....

Does anybody other than Trumpers really believe that Trump will get votes from independents and undecideds in 2024?  The longer his legal troubles go on and the more he talks, the more people are going to look elsewhere, don't you think? And for the second straight election, those people will determine the results.

The wonderful fact is that if their master isn't the nominee deplorable cultist will stay home and not vote because they're delusional women who think every time their master doesn't win it's because he's being cheated or unfairly prosecuted.

I don’t know. The country was doing better with Trump in office.  Minus the DNC controlled  riots and looting. I think people will make a comparison of Biden and Trump. Trump wins that hands down. Plus Biden can barely speak or walk. And Kamala. Just because the democrats want us to forget about her doesn’t mean she’s not there.

It's pretty easy to speculate the trump is looking for a settlement. Basically, he wants to keep all that money he raised through fundraising and legal fees. Except, that's illegal. But I would not be surprised at all if he worked out a deal with the rnc.

Trump Suggests He's Open to Taking Plea Deal With a Specific Condition

....Former President Donald Trump said that he will not accept a plea deal in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, unless it comes with a specific condition.....Trump further predicted that he will not be convicted on the federal charges stemming from the documents case. He also stressed that he would not accept a plea deal unless he was presented one "where they pay me some damages."

Newsweek reached out to legal experts via email for insight on how common plea deals with damages payments are, or if such an arrangement is even possible....The former president added that he does foresee having to pardon himself should he win reelection in 2024, a theory that has been floated by many pundits. His reasoning, however, came down to the fact that he does not believe the charges against him will stick....

In the aftermath of Thursday's indictment, Trump issued a call on his Truth Social account for supporters to attend a rally outside of his Tuesday arraignment. Prior to the current situation, he issued a similar call after being indicted on state-level charges in Manhattan in March for allegedly violating campaign finance laws, though the resulting crowd was small. Trump has also maintained his innocence in the case.

A Destructive Trump Indictment

.....For the first time in U.S. history, the prosecutorial power of the federal government has been used against a former President who is also running against the sitting President. This is far graver than the previous indictment by a rogue New York prosecutor, and it will roil the 2024 election and U.S. politics for years to come....But it’s striking, and legally notable, that the indictment never mentions the Presidential Records Act (PRA) that allows a President access to documents, both classified and unclassified, once he leaves office. It allows for good-faith negotiation with the National Archives. Yet the indictment assumes that Mr. Trump had no right to take any classified documents....This doesn’t fit the spirit or letter of the PRA, which was written by Congress to recognize that such documents had previously been the property of former Presidents. If the Espionage Act means Presidents can’t retain any classified documents, then the PRA is all but meaningless. This will be part of Mr. Trump’s defense....

.....As usual, Mr. Trump is his own worst enemy. “This would have gone nowhere,” former Attorney General Bill Barr told CBS recently, “had the President just returned the documents. But he jerked them around for a year and a half.”....In the court of public opinion, the first question will be about two standards of justice. Mr. Biden had old classified files stored in his Delaware garage next to his sports car. When that news came out, he didn’t sound too apologetic. “My Corvette’s in a locked garage, OK? So it’s not like they’re sitting out on the street,” Mr. Biden said. AG Garland appointed another special counsel, Robert Hur, to investigate, but Justice isn’t going to indict Mr. Biden.....As for willful, how about the basement email server that Hillary Clinton used as Secretary of State? FBI director James Comey said in 2016 that she and her colleagues “were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information.” According to him, 113 emails included information that was classified when it was sent or received. Eight were Top Secret. About 2,000 others were later “upclassified” to Confidential. This was the statement Mr. Comey ended by declaring Mrs. Clinton free and clear, since “no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.”

.....The charges are a destructive intervention into the 2024 election, and the potential trial will hang over the race. They also make it more likely that the election will be a referendum on Mr. Trump, rather than on Mr. Biden’s economy and agenda or a GOP alternative. This may be exactly what Democrats intend with their charges.....It was once unthinkable in America that the government’s awesome power of prosecution would be turned on a political opponent. That seal has now been broken. It didn’t need to be.....The greatest irony of the age of Trump is that for all his violating of democratic norms, his frenzied opponents have done and are doing their own considerable damage to democracy.

Republicans are counting on people not to read the Trump indictment

.....Donald Trump’s critics want people to read the special counsel’s indictment. Trump’s supporters do not. This is part of a striking larger pattern.....This is demonstrably true. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy slammed the indictment as a “grave injustice” nearly a full day before the California Republican had any idea what it said. Similarly, Sen. Ted Cruz told his podcast listeners, “This indictment is garbage,” long before it was unsealed. The Texan — a Harvard Law school graduate and a former state solicitor general — was condemning a legal document he had not read and knew effectively nothing about....

....There were, however, other conservatives who preferred a more literate approach. John Bolton, who served as Trump’s White House national security advisor, wrote on Twitter, “All American voters should read the full text of the Trump indictment, and then consult their own consciences.”

The editorial board of National Review, which I nearly always disagree with, added on Saturday:.... is impossible to read the indictment against Trump in the Mar-a-Lago documents case and not be appalled at the way he handled classified documents as an ex-president, and responded to the attempt by federal authorities to reclaim them.

....At the time, it was a refreshing change of pace. Sen. Lindsey Graham conceded he hadn’t read the Mueller report, despite the fact that he was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time. Several of his Republican colleagues, including fellow South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, said they hadn’t read it, either....Their incuriosity was difficult to defend. A sitting president of the United States was the subject of a criminal investigation, as part of an international scandal of historic significance. ...But just as importantly, they assumed the public wouldn’t read it, either, and there’s reason to believe those assumptions were rooted in fact....

Mike Pence says Trump indictment "contains serious charges," that he "cannot defend what is alleged” and "no one is above the law"

.....Former Vice President Mike Pence said Wednesday he cannot defend "what is alleged" in the federal indictment against former President Donald Trump over classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, but he also pledged to clean house at the Department of Justice.....Mr. Pence, a 2024 GOP presidential candidate, reacted to the charges by saying, "No one is above the law."

....."This indictment contains serious charges. I cannot defend what is alleged," he told CNBC's "Squawk Box." "Creating an opportunity where highly classified material could have fallen into the wrong hands, even inadvertently, that jeopardizes our national security, it puts at risk the men and women of our armed forces."

"The former president has a right to make his case in court," Mr. Pence said.....

Donald Trump Calls for 20 Republicans To Be Immediately Primaried

.....Donald Trump has called for any Republican voting against efforts to censure and fine Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff to be primaried—a move that would potentially involve as many as 20 GOP representatives.....Earlier this week, the House rejected a Republican attempt to fine the former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee for investigating and impeaching Trump over his alleged collusion with Russia to win the 2016 election.....The resolution to censure Schiff, sponsored by Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, a loyal ally of the former president, was rejected by the House on Wednesday with a 225 to 196 vote. It received the support of 20 GOP lawmakers. Two other Republicans voted "present" to avoid registering a position—as did five Democrats....

....Trump was clearly angered by what he perceived as disloyalty from his fellow party members, writing his praise for Luna on social media while condemning the 20 who voted against the resolution....."Anna Paulina Luna is a STAR. She never gives up, especially in holding total lowlifes like Adam 'Shifty' Schiff responsible for their lies, deceit, deception, and actually putting our Country at great risk, for which he should be imprisoned!," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social early on Saturday....."He is a Leaker and a Scoundrel. Any Republican voting against his CENSURE, or worse, should immediately be primaried. There are plenty of great candidates out there!,"

....The resolution sponsored by Luna claims that Schiff had "exploited his positions on HPSCI (House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence) to encourage and excuse abusive intelligence investigations of Americans for political purposes." It accuses the Democrat of having "used his position and access to sensitive information to instigate a fraudulently based investigation, which he then used to amass political gain and fundraising dollars."

.....Luna, who was elected last year, said that she will try to pass the resolution again next week and she will amend it to garner more support from her fellow Republicans....."They can introduce all the resolutions they want. It could be 16 million or 160 million, I'm not going to stop defending our democracy," Schiff said in response to the Republican move, talking with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on The Situation Room on Wednesday.

Donald Trump still has ‘vice’ grip on GOP voters — but high-ranking Republicans fear he’s not the right candidate

...The top question the candidates are asking themselves is whether Trump’s second indictment will give him a bump in the polls, as the first one did. ....Their follow-up question is whether a possible third indictment, or even a fourth, would finally peel away enough Trump primary supporters to give other candidates a shot at the nomination.....With two more investigations that target him still underway, he could have as many as four indictments hanging over his head before the Iowa caucuses next January....

....Even as they largely avoid criticizing him directly and say the cases show Democrats using law enforcement for political ends, they also now say the indictments make Trump a certain loser in a general election....Ergo, nominating him means four more years of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. ....“I think the electability argument is going to become more salient with this event,” former House Speaker Paul Ryan said after Trump’s federal arraignment....“He’s going to cost us the Senate again, he’s going to cost us House seats, and we want to win.”

....Of the six national polls taken completely or partly since then, the former president averages 51.5%, a 30-point margin over runner-up Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who averages just 21.5%.....In late May, Trump’s average lead over DeSantis in six recent national polls stood at 33 points. ....Although early state polls show swings, there aren’t enough of them to be a reliable trend. In the single recent survey in Iowa, Trump holds a 15-point lead over DeSantis, down from 42 points in a May survey by different pollsters. ....The driving force in Trump’s staying power is the conviction among his supporters that they are the ultimate target of both the radical left and the corrupt deep state, and that the prosecutions are tantamount to persecutions of him and them.....

.....The argument from inside the GOP that the cases will prevent Trump from winning a general election is based on the idea that charges, regardless of their perceived unfairness among Republicans, will turn off too many independent voters in swing states, meaning Trump will again come up short in the Electoral College. ....New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu is especially forceful on the point, telling CNN that “The math has shown Donald Trump has no chance of winning in November of ’24.....No one is undecided about the former president. He’s a known commodity....If Republicans nominate him, then we’re saying a vote for him in the primary is effectively a vote for Joe Biden.”

Harvard Poll: 55 Percent of the Public View the Trump Indictment as “Politically Motivated”

......A Harvard/Harris poll is bad news for Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Justice Department. The poll shows that 55% of Americans believe Trump’s indictment is politically motivated and 56%  believe that it constitutes election interference.  The poll captures the level of distrust for the Justice Department and further demonstrates what I described yesterday as the failure of Merrick Garland at the midpoint of his tenure as Attorney General...... 55% of Independents view the indictment as a political exercise. Not only do 56 percent view it as election interference but only 44 percent see it as “the fair application of the law”

.....The poll is also bad news for Biden. Some 65 percent believe Biden “mishandled” classified material while 72 percent take that view with Clinton’s email scandal. The Justice Department and the media appear to have “lost the room” with the American people. They are primarily appealing to Democrats who (at 80%) support the indictment....It is also an indictment of the media. After years of “advocacy journalism” and biased reporting, the public now tunes out the media. This is a strong indictment with troubling allegations and evidence. Yet, it does not matter because the media long ago lost much of the country with one-sided, unrelenting coverage....

Turley brings up a good point that is often ignored.

The constant barrage against Trump by the activist MSM has worn down the general public. You can't say "I finally GOT HIM" over and over again and promise that he's finally going to prison now, and then nothing happens. Which is some strange irony as this documents case has real legal teeth to it. It's the most vulnerable Trump has been legally and it's the first time where he is truly and completely indefensible. But the apathy around Trump by much of the general public might cause them to ignore the actual truth of the case.

In effect, the activist complicit hard left leaning MSM might have actually HELPED Trump in his bid for reelection. Indirectly, but still provided unintentional media cover. And certainly the activist MSM has profited from talking about  Trump and hammering him daily for 8 years straight.

I don't believe Trump can win 2024 POTUS. However it's Team Blue and the DNC that has managed to turn this overall strategy into more and more of a coin flip. They are pushing him in the hopes that he emerges because he's the only Republican they can beat in a general election, but each push has the risk of backfiring on them. Because it might cause Trump to eventually lose the nomination to DeSantis.

‘Huh?’ Trump reminded of Alice Johnson pardon during call to execute drug dealers

.....Former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 Republican nomination, appeared confused when reminded that a convicted cocaine dealer he ordered released in 2018 would have been put to death under his latest proposal to execute drug dealers.....“You’ve said you’d be in favor of the death penalty for drug dealers. Still the case?” asked Fox News “Special Report” anchor Bret Baier during an exchange with the 77-year-old that aired Tuesday....

“That’s the only way you’re gonna stop it,” Trump declared, adding that “a drug dealer will kill approximately 500 people during the course of his or her life.”...Baier then brought up Alice Johnson, a Tennessee grandmother who had served 21 years of a life sentence in connection with her non-violent involvement in a cocaine distribution ring.....Trump commuted Johnson’s sentence during his second year in office and issued her and other drug convicts a full pardon in August 2020 after being lobbied by reality TV star Kim Kardashian....

“But she’d be killed under your plan,” Baier retorted, prompting Trump to reply, “Huh?”

“As a drug dealer,” the anchor continued.....“She’s technically a former drug dealer. She had a multimillion-dollar cocaine ring....Even Alice Johnson? ....” the anchor pressed.

.....“We’re going to be asking everyone who sells drugs, gets caught selling drugs, to receive the death penalty for their heinous acts,” Trump said, while pledging to ask Congress to pass a law enacting the brutal practice....The proposal comes after almost two dozen US states have legalized recreational marijuana use and a growing number of municipalities have moved to decriminalize possession of hard drugs....

Trump: I Wasn’t ‘Allowed to Fire’ Fauci, I ‘Usually’ Wouldn’t Let that Stop Me — DeSantis ‘Loved’ Him and I Didn’t Spend Much Time with Fauci

....During a portion of an interview with the Fox News Channel that took place on Monday and was aired on Tuesday’s broadcast of “Special Report,” 2024 Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump said he didn’t fire Dr. Anthony Fauci because he couldn’t, “but I wouldn’t let that usually get in my way,” but he didn’t spend a lot of time with Fauci anyway. Trump also stated that 2024 rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) “loved Fauci.”....

.....Trump responded, “You’re not actually allowed to fire him, but I wouldn’t let that usually get in my way, it’s one of those things. But I never spent a lot of time with Fauci. Who did is Biden. Fauci became very powerful under Biden. … Remember, Fauci was the one that said, don’t close it to China. I closed it to China. Fauci, believe it or not, was totally anti-mask and then he became a radical masker. But on the vaccines, so, the mandates are horrible, and I was always against the mandates. But really, on the vaccines, I let the governors make their decisions. But you have a lot of people that love the vaccines, I mean, you do. They happen to be more Democrat than they are Republican. You have a lot of people, there are people that say I saved 100 million lives. I don’t even talk about it....”

Trump Calls For Direct Election Of School Principals By Parents: "The Parents Should Be Able To Fire Them"

FMR. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: "Another top priority will be to expel the communists and these terrible people that have taken over our education system where you look. I will immediately signed a new executive order to cut federal funding for any school pushing Critical Race Theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual or political content on our children....I always say this. Can you believe this? Can you imagine saying this 10 or 15 years ago? I will fight for parents' rights. Of course you fight. Today I have to say, I have to make it -- I will fight for parents' rights. of course you fight for parents' rights. Who would ever think you have to say that as a politician or as a person at a microphone?

Including the right to send your child to the public, private charter, or religious school of your choice. At the same time, I refuse to abandon our public school system to these lunatics because what's happening there is terrible. That's why I will fight for the direct election of school principals by the parents, the parents of the school. If any principal is not getting the job done, the parents should be able to fire them immediately and select someone who will.

I will not give one penny to any school that has a vaccine mandate or masked mandate from kindergarten to college. And something else I find hard to believe that I have to even say. It's so ridiculous. It's so horrible and so ridiculous. I will keep men out of women's sports. And I will sign a law prohibiting child sexual mutilation in all 50 states. Prohibited. And on day one I will reinstate the Trump ban on transgenders in the military. Because a warrior should be focused on crushing American (enemies), on being strong, on having the image of being strong. They have to be powerful. They have to be strong, especially when you see what's happening in the world today, not catering to radical gender ideology."

‘It was bravado’: Trump says he wasn’t holding up classified documents in 2021 meeting

.....Former President Donald Trump insisted on Tuesday that he was not showing off classified documents in an audio clip first published by CNN in which he referred to “highly confidential” material and “secret information” that he could no longer declassify.....“I would say it was bravado, if you want to know the truth, it was bravado....I was talking and just holding up papers and talking about them, but I had no documents. I didn’t have any documents.”

....The latest comments suggested a new potential legal argument from the former president: That he was overselling the material he was showing to an aide and people working on a biography of former chief of staff Mark Meadows in the recording, a transcript of which featured heavily in his recent federal indictment......“I just held up a whole pile of — my desk is loaded up with papers. I have papers from 25 different things,” he said, adding he kept relevant news articles about topics like Iran on hand.....At one point, Trump gestured to the seat next to him on the plane, where a stack of various papers — newspapers, copies of his speech, printouts of articles — sat. He grabbed some from the pile and placed them in front of him, moving them around as he spoke and offering up a physical reenactment of what he said was occurring on the audio tape.....

....Asked about his use of the word “plans” during a Fox News interview earlier Tuesday to describe some items he may have highlighted in the 2021 meeting, Trump insisted he was referring to “building plans” and plans for golf courses strewn about his desk.....“Did I use the word plans?” he said. “What I’m referring to is magazines, newspapers, plans of buildings. I had plans of buildings. You know, building plans? I had plans of a golf course.”

....Asked if he had any regrets about his handling of classified documents, Trump said he did not. “No, I have no regrets,” he said. “I didn't have a classified document. There was no classified document on my desk.”...Asked whether the audio would affect whether he considers a plea deal, Trump said he was confident that the government’s use of the Espionage Act to prosecute him would fail...“Frankly, that you even ask a question like that's a disgrace,” he said. “So let's end it.”
