NY Times On Leftist Elite Social Hierarchy Against Trumpism: "What If We’re The Bad Guys Here?"

Recommended Posts

What if We’re the Bad Guys Here?

.....Donald Trump seems to get indicted on a weekly basis. Yet he is utterly dominating his Republican rivals in the polls, and he is tied with Joe Biden in the general election surveys. Trump’s poll numbers are stronger against Biden now than at any time in 2020. What’s going on here? Why is this guy still politically viable, after all he’s done?....In this story we anti-Trumpers are the good guys, the forces of progress and enlightenment. The Trumpers are reactionary bigots and authoritarians. Many Republicans support Trump no matter what, according to this story, because at the end of the day he’s still the bigot in chief, the embodiment of their resentments, and that’s what matters to them most....I partly agree with this story; but it’s also a monument to elite self-satisfaction. So let me try another story on you. I ask you to try on a vantage point in which we anti-Trumpers are not the eternal good guys. In fact, we’re the bad guys....

....This story begins in the 1960s, when high school grads had to go off to fight in Vietnam, but the children of the educated class got college deferments. It continues in the 1970s, when the authorities imposed busing on working-class areas in Boston, but not on the upscale communities like Wellesley where they themselves lived....The ideal that “we’re all in this together” was replaced with the reality that the educated class lives in a world up here, and everybody else is forced into a world down there. Members of our class are always publicly speaking out for the marginalized, but somehow we always end up building systems that serve ourselves...

.....The most important of those systems is the modern meritocracy. We built an entire social order that sorts and excludes people on the basis of the quality that we possess most: academic achievement. Highly educated parents go to elite schools, marry each other, work at high-paying professional jobs and pour enormous resources into our children, who get into the same elite schools, marry each other and pass their exclusive class privileges down from generation to generation.....Daniel Markovits summarized years of research in his book “The Meritocracy Trap”: “Today, middle-class children lose out to the rich children at school, and middle-class adults lose out to elite graduates at work. Meritocracy blocks the middle class from opportunity. Then it blames those who lose a competition for income and status that, even when everyone plays by the rules, only the rich can win....”

....The meritocracy isn’t only a system of exclusion; it’s an ethos. During his presidency Barack Obama used the word “smart” in the context of his policies over 900 times. The implication was that anybody who disagreed with his policies (and perhaps didn’t go to Harvard Law) must be stupid. Over the last decades we’ve taken over whole professions and locked everybody else out. When I began my journalism career in Chicago in the 1980s, there were still some old crusty working-class guys around the newsroom. Now we’re not only a college-dominated profession, we’re an elite-college-dominated profession. Only 0.8 percent of all college students graduate from the super elite 12 schools (the Ivy League colleges, plus Stanford, M.I.T., Duke and the University of Chicago). A 2018 study found that more than 50 percent of the staff writers at the beloved New York Times and The Wall Street Journal attended one of the 29 most elite universities in the nation....

.....Members of our class also segregate ourselves into a few booming metro areas: San Francisco, D.C., Austin and so on. In 2020, Biden won only 500 or so counties, but together they are responsible for 71 percent of the American economy. Trump won over 2,500 counties, responsible for only 29 percent. Once we find our cliques, we don’t get out much. In the book “Social Class in the 21st Century,” sociologist Mike Savage and his co-researchers found that the members of the highly educated class tend to be the most insular, measured by how often we have contact with those who have jobs unlike our own.....Like all elites, we use language and mores as tools to recognize one another and exclude others. Using words like problematic, cisgender, Latinx and intersectional is a sure sign that you’ve got cultural capital coming out of your ears. Meanwhile, members of the less-educated classes have to walk on eggshells, because they never know when we’ve changed the usage rules, so that something that was sayable five years ago now gets you fired....

.....We also change the moral norms in ways that suit ourselves, never mind the cost to others. For example, there used to be a norm that discouraged people from having children outside of marriage, but that got washed away during our period of cultural dominance, as we eroded norms that seemed judgmental or that might inhibit individual freedom......“Sixty percent of births to women with only a high school certificate occur out of wedlock, compared with only 10 percent to women with a university degree.” That matters, Wooldridge continues, because “The rate of single parenting is the most significant predictor of social immobility in the country.”..... Elite institutions have become so politically progressive in part because the people in them want to feel good about themselves as they take part in systems that exclude and reject...It’s easy to understand why people in less-educated classes would conclude that they are under economic, political, cultural and moral assault — and why they’ve rallied around Trump as their best warrior against the educated class. Trump understood that it’s not the entrepreneurs who seem most threatening to workers; it’s the professional class.....Are Trump supporters right that the indictments are just a political witch hunt? Of course not. As a card-carrying member of my class, I still basically trust the legal system and the neutral arbiters of justice. Trump is a monster in the way we’ve all been saying for years and deserves to go to prison..... We can condemn the Trumpian populists all day until the cows come home, but the real question is when will we stop behaving in ways that make Trumpism inevitable....

"Recently I took a friend with only a high school degree to lunch. Insensitively, I led her into a gourmet sandwich shop. Suddenly I saw her face freeze up as she was confronted with sandwiches named “Padrino” and “Pomodoro” and ingredients like soppressata, capicollo and a striata baguette. I quickly asked her if she wanted to go somewhere else and she anxiously nodded yes and we ate Mexican."  - David Brooks

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/11/opinion/how-we-are-ruining-america.html

******

David Brooks who wrote the first article for the New York Times is NOT a liberal. He's a "leftist"

The point of the article is trying to appeal to the working class American. While also trying to continue to smear Donald Trump and what he represents to working class Conservatives, including poor white rural Christian America ( You can hate Trump all you want, but many of his points about the average working class American being disenfranchised further and further is true. It's true and just because people don't like him and even might despise him doesn't mean he's automatically wrong about some of these core issues) and pander to the "intersectional" base of voters for the Democratic Party.

Brooks carries NOTHING that embodies the value system of a "traditional liberal"

The answer is that it's too late. Team Blue and the DNC and what's left of the Obama/Biden political machine declared war on the every day working class. Defunded the police, turned the Southern Border into an open swinging gate, used the pandemic like a sledgehammer against the rank and file, locked down public schools, chose identity politics over kitchen table issues, mocked and condescended from the activist MSM, killed domestic energy independence, abandoned billions in high tech weapons to terrorists that were paid for our own tax dollars to kill future generations of American soldiers to come, and on and on and on and on.

Here is what Brooks is really saying - "We are so very sorry that we are so much smarter than you. We should have been more merciful. We only recognize this now because Trump is so evil, that he woke us all up to our white privileged guilt."

If you hate Trump. Go ahead. If you hate the GOP. Go ahead. If you have a problem with the Republican Party. Go ahead. I'm tired of Trump, that gutless narcissist imbecile and his total clown show. I also find many elected Republicans to be corrupt and insane grifter idiots. There are real problems within the Conservative base, I won't deny that. But if you choose any pathway towards full blown identity politics, like this nimrod apologist in David Brooks, it's getting on your hands and knees and begging for your children to be massacred.

Establishment Democrats and the radical left didn't just declare war on rank and file adults in this country, they also made it clear they want to hunt down and use the children of the working class as pure cannon fodder.

These "journalist" leftists or liberals are so arrogant. There are millions of Trump supporters highly educated and more intelligent that these dufuses. My IQ is between 130 - 140 and I support Trump. I'm disgusted reading how they try to hypothesize that they are the bad guys and then go on right on to say all libs are highly educated and on some higher level and state the Trump supporters are uneducated. They can fock off. These people are seriously the most narcissistic stupid azzholes on the face of the earth.

Every interview from every Trump supporter ever tells me who the bad guys are here.

It's the uneducated, CT believing, anti-science morons who worship a silver spoon, reality tv know nothing.

It's like Trump attracts the very worst our society has to offer...oh wait, that's exactly who he appeals to.  Like when he came down the escalator saying how mexicans are rapist and murderers.  Any idiot who heard that and thought "I like this guy" is clearly someone who's a net negative to this country.

It's a fine piece. David Brooks is what passes for a conservative at NYT ... the fully establishment Bush/ Romney / McConnell / Paul Ryan type.

Anyone who tells people how high their IQ is, is usually pretty dumb.  Source = everyone I've ever met that talked about their high IQ has been dumb.  It's a factor of taking a BS test online, lying about it, and feeling insecure about how dumb they are that they need to tell people that they're not dumb.

You are a unicorn among the MAGA crowd.  College educated folks are fleeing MAGA and heading directly to the democratic party.  Hell it's one of the main reason why the republican party is in its death knell.  Trump just hastened the process.

Can't wait until he spend the entire '24 campaign season sitting through one of his soon to be 4 indictments and crying about the stolen election.  That's exactly what americans want to hear, particularly with the economy humming like it never did under Trump.

Rachel Maddow dragged for scolding stolen election claims with Hillary Clinton: 'Can y'all hear yourselves?'

.....Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton laughed merrily at her one-time political opponent, former President Donald Trump, before his indictment on Monday.....Hillary Clinton and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow were hammered on social media Tuesday after the MSNBC host scolded "bad actors" that falsely claim "every election is stolen" during their Monday night interview. ...."That the system of democracy at its heart is the idea that the people get to decide how we are governed.... And if we no longer believe that our will is effectuated through the system, if bad actors tell us falsely that every election is stolen and that the only way an election is trustworthy is if they come out on top of it, it tells you something not just about that person or that moment, it maybe wounds us as a democracy and in a way that's hard to repair," Maddow said....What do you think about how we get better after the wounds that have been inflicted on us through this process?" the host asked Clinton....

....."Well, I think the truth matters. I think having these cases be brought and be brought in such professional manners, we’ll see how they unfold. Obviously, the trials, if there are trials, are gonna be critically important," the former 2016 Democratic presidential nominee said.....Clinton argued that a lot of Americans don't know what Biden has done. ....."And part of that is they don't get their news from MSNBC, they get their news from social media, if they get any news at all. They don't have the kind of information that would give them confidence in knowing what their government is doing...."

The New York Post reported: "President Biden used at least three pseudonyms during his vice presidency to send messages to his son Hunter concerning both family and official government business — including meetings with Ukrainian leaders, and emails found on the first son’s abandoned laptop show.

Then-Vice President Biden emailed Hunter under the aliases “Robin Ware,” “Robert L. Peters” and “JRB Ware” between 2014 and 2016, keeping his son abreast of scheduled talks with then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Kyiv Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, among other communications The Post first revealed in 2021."

Goodness, does anyone read the drivel this dude posts?  Just out of context videos and a bunch of meaningless word salad.

Everyone with a brain knows that trump supporters are violent, dumb, racist, and would prefer to turn America into some version of a backwards, religious state.

OP try to put your own thoughts into your own words rather than simply copying and pasting whatever alt right crap you clearly slurp up so enthusiastically.

I read many of his posts. He puts in the work so why not?  Left wing cultists are typically low IQ and incapable of processing such copious information.  Not me boyo.  My IQ is off the charts and I see right through the nonsense the Biden base laps up like Gerber strained peas

The major fallacy being: Because lefties believe the bolded is true and because they don't support Trump, then they automatically aren't "violent, dumb, and racist".   This clearly isn't the case.  It never has been the case.

That's probably the worst thing about the idol worship with this guy...he's never really "walked the walk" of the common man.  If this guy came from nothing; if he gave time in his early life for service to this country in either military or LE; if he actually ever had to worry about putting food on the table for his family...I could understand the love for him.  He's none of that.

Know what’s funny? Bernie would have beat Trump.  But he wasn’t acceptable either. So spare me the nonsense about the Democrats being the stewards of the working class. They rigged it against him too.

PT Barnum was right about Trump supporters.

Joe Biden voted for NAFTA. While running with Obama he said he would personally renegotiate it. He didn’t even try. Trump did. Is it the  greatest deal ever made? Nope. But it’s better than what Biden voted for.

Anectodal evidence aside, it is true.

Among college graduates, a mere 30% approved of Trump’s job performance, and 67% disapproved. Even among non-g

raduates, only 42% approved of Trump, and 52% disapproved.

The only education group to give Trump higher approval than disapproval ratings were white non-college graduates, where 52% approved and 43% disapproved. Among white college graduates, those disapproving of Trump’s job performance (66%) was more than two-to-one higher than those approving (32%).

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/meet-the-press/gop-faces-massive-realignment-it-sheds-college-educated-voters-n1264425

At the beginning of this century, Republicans held an 11-point edge on party affiliation among college-educated voters. By the time Barack Obama was president, the figures had flipped to become a 4-point edge for the Democrats. And as President Donald Trump’s term was winding down, the numbers had come full-circle and the Democrats had a 13-point edge among college-educated voters on party affiliation.

Lots of people in America are single issue voters. It's another factor that many on the activist radical left ignore.

You can't keep insulting and demonizing up to half the country for exercising their free speech and political voice, just because "you" ( not you specifically, but clearly the radical left and establishment Democrats) don't like it.

However Biden's handlers roll him out there, to say those toxic things, to smear up to half the country, to try to justify all the failures and corruption and clearly authoritarian leanings from Team Blue in this administration.  They want Republicans and Conservatives to get lumped together into a "monolith" so it's easier to dehumanize us, thus justifying their endless attacks on us.

The current Democratic Party clearly could not grasp the power of how information flows in this modern culture. You can try to suppress information with the activist complicit MSM, but there are just far too many pundits with large enough platforms to get real data out there.

That's been a first page play from the RNC since Rush Limbaugh pooped onto the scene and made demonizing the Left more important than Conservative political ideas.  Maybe the Democrats should go high when the other side goes low......but let's not act like this is something that hasn't been around for decades; and in all honesty...since the beginning of politics.
