Recommended Posts

I eat them cause they are healthy but can't say I love them. Will say with some olive oil and about 5 olives with them they are kinda tasty. So who else eats them ?

I just ate a tin my own self.  I like them in mustard. 👌

They need to redesign the tin, though.  Too much gets stuck up under the corners, and if you try to lick it out you're liable to slice your tongue.

Full disclosure, even if I can reach all the fish, I lick the corners anyway for the mustard. :(

All the while trying to avoid the peeled-back lid touching my face.  You do not dare try to pull that lid all the way off, it will flick sardine splooge everywhere. :nono:

Not me, but the dolphin that lives next door loves them.

Vienna sausages and potted meat are my go to.

I have a negative association with them from my youth.  My grandma served them with some other (mostly also disgusting to young me) fish as part of our Christmas Eve dinner.  We had other food which I liked and I loved those events, but those sardines, eesh... thing is I'd probably like them now.  I love love love sushi, and I've had some which I'd guess is a close cousin to sardines.

Similar for canned tuna, utterly disgusts me.  Yet I love seared ahi.  :dunno:

Just had a tin that that are supposed to have come from Portugal (maybe they all do) and they were great.

Heard someone say they contain elevated levels of arsenic ... Wife didn't say I should buy more but I could hear the rat in her head getting off the couch to hit the wheel ...

You didn’t have any in Italy?

Ya know, now that you say that... maybe, but I don't think so.  We had a bunch of seafood appetizers, particularly on the west coast (Ligurian Sea), so it's possible I did and didn't know.  We had anchovies though, which I like (salt cured).

This is the story of a young couple in Portland, Maine
While waiting for her husband Don
To return home from work, she reaches for a can of anchovies
As she spreads the tiny fish across a piece of lettuce
She notices a small note at the bottom of the can
Written on it is a telephone number
Curious, she dials, and is told, "Don't move, lady, we'll be right over"
Placing the phone back on the hook, she turns
To see three smartly dressed men standing in her kitchen doorway
Before she realizes what is happening to her
She is rolled tightly in long sheets of cellophane
Transported to an international airport and placed on a waiting jet-liner
All this being too much for her to comprehend, she passes out
Upon awakening, she finds herself in a strange, foreign speaking nation
'Dalas nekcihc dna tihs nekcihc neewteb
Ecnereffid eht wonk ot suineg a ekat t'nseod ti'
Alone, fearing her escape impossible
She seeks comfort in the arms of a confidential agent
With the trace of her kiss still warm upon his lips
He betrays her to the hands of three scientists
Who are engaged in diabolical, avant-garde experiments previously
Performed only on insects and other small, meaningless creatures
Using her as their subject, they are delighted with the results
For the first time, a human being is transformed into a, shh, top secret
Meanwhile, back in Portland, Maine
Her husband Don, now chain-smoking 40 packs of cigarettes a day
Sits at a local bar and has a few beers with the regulars
Bored, everyone's attention turns to the television set
That just hangs from the wall, welcome to bowling for dollars
Suddenly, crazy Al says
"S-say, Don, there sure is something familiar about that bowling ball"
To which the terrified Don replies
"Oh my God! That bowling ball, it's my wife!"
And the lesson we learn from this story is
Next time you place your order
don't forget to say, "No anchovies please"

If I'm going down this road, I generally opt for smoked oysters or mussels.

Kippers are better than sardines.  Hell if I know the difference.

But they're pretty much at the end of shopping.

Because everyone knows you pick your Kippers last

Do you get them in the mustard, the "olive oil", the Louisiana hot sauce, or the water? 🤔

Mrs. Barouse used to make us baked beans and Vienna sausages in middle school. I still wonder if that was subliminal message.

I get the sausage 'link' but not the baked beans reference.  This isn't something related to tubgirl ... or is it?

My wife was digging through a cabinet for Thanksgiving stuff and found an unopened 6-pack of sardine cans.  I told her about this thread and that I wanted to try them; she said to wait until we plan to eat the whole can, because the expiration date is 2026.  That late of an expiration makes me question if it is actually food which humans should consume, but I expect that sometime in the coming months I'll try them.

They last forever in those cans.
